The UK's Conservative Party is getting its knickers in a twist over legislation before Parliament shortly to make same-sex marriage legal (with exceptions for religious bodies).

As it will be a free vote, those Conservatives who oppose same-sex marriage can abstain or vote against without bringing down the Coalition Government.

The prospects are that the legislation will pass because the majority of Labour and Liberal Democrat MPs will support it, even if a significant number of Conservatives cannot.

Conservatives against homosexuality? Didn't they go through private schools? Did none of their schools have bicycle sheds? Such hypocrisy! ;)

Hmmmmmmm ... never tried a bicycle shed. That could be promising. ;)

so gay marriage is legal in england. is that a bad thing ?

We already had civil partnerships. The debate now happening in Westminster is to make gay marriage equal to heterosexual marriage.

Good? Bad? Depends on your point of view.

Once made into law, the debate will gradually erode away.

The Civil Partnership Act 2004 gave same-sex couples the rights and responsibilities similar to those in a civil marriage. Civil partners are entitled to the same property rights, the same exemptions on inheritance tax, social security and pension benefits as married couples. They also have the same ability to get parental responsibility for a partner's children as well as reasonable maintenance, tenancy rights, insurance and next-of-kin rights in hospital and with doctors. There is a process similar to divorce for dissolving a civil partnership.

Until now it has been banned for civil partnership ceremonies to include religious readings, music or symbols and forbidden for them to take place in religious venues, regardless of the views of the building's owners.

So this is a religious argument: bear in mind though that, in most counties in England, the church was stripped of its power to burn people at the stake some years ago and buggering choir boys is generally frowned upon.
