Senate Scuttles Amendment Banning Same-Sex Marriage

The Senate voted today to block a White House-backed constitutional amendment to bar same-sex marriages, dooming its prospects for approval by Congress this year but ensuring it an emotionally-charged role during campaigns this fall.

The move to cut off debate on the bill got the support of only 48 senators -- 12 short of the 60 needed and 19 short of the two-thirds majority that it would take to amend the Constitution. Fifty senators voted against the proposal.

Republicans had hoped to win at least a simple majority in favor of proceeding with the amendment but were thwarted when six of their own colleagues joined all but three Democrats in voting to scuttle the measure without a vote on its substance. Several senators had said there would have been even more "no" votes if the showdown had occurred on substance rather than procedure.

Dare I say, I think this is great!
The American government is following is constitution by allowing freedom of choice.
It's too bad political parties can't stay out of peoples bedrooms and face real problems affecting it's citizens.
I can only hope Canada stays on track and offers us the same choice.

I thought we already did last year, unless the influx of Americans to city hall during the 2003 Gay Pride week was a farce? I don't think anyone's liscence was revoked?

Hm.

The GOP didn't want it to pass. It's a purely political move. GW's stance on gay marriage is well known, he can't loose support with the move. Now he forces Kerry to take a stand as well in the coming campaign. Kerry can't win. If he supports the ban he will anger a huge part of his current constiuency, if he opposes it, he will loose the support of critical people in swing states he needs that are more conservative in outlook.

Crappola, Colly. Your ubiquitous doses of reality sure take the rose tint off my specs. I'll just stare at your leg for a while and feel better. (Check your email.)

You are most welcome to stare :)

At this juncture, the move will make little difference on the outcome unless Kerry's handlers are rash. His best move is to not adress it and hope it dosen't hurt him. The problem is he has thus far been a non-entity and if he dosen't come out swinging, he is banking on Bush's actions to elect him. The last man who tried that was Thomas Dewy. Anyone remember the famouspicture of a triumpahnt truman holding up a paper that says Dewy beats Truman?
