Based on author and story favs I have about a 65/35 mix of men to women reading mine. My Facebook author page is more along the lines of 75/25 though. I do believe the female number is that high on both due to my heavy concentration on gay romance stories.
I've had PMs and emails from both female readers and authors that think MM sex is very hot when presented well. I've told at least one female author that she embarrasses me when she writes hotter sex scenes than mine. LOL
As far as heterosexual males, I see the most activity from those on Bi/MMF and stroker stories. Curiosity, unfulfilled fantasies, and/or revisiting a time when they experimented probably explains why they venture into the category.
There are a good number of female authors that contribute some excellent stories and series to the GM category. Right now at least eight of the top twenty stories on the All Time HOF list were written by females, so they definitely have both a presence and a fan base.
The top lists are one-off stories (often just chapters) and probably have more voting maneuvering going on than the general file. Popularity of an author is better represented by the "Most Popular" listing on the hubs, which appear to represent those reading and clicking the "favorited" buttons which is less susceptible to rating wars. On the GM hug, for both the "today" and the "7 day" list, seven authors claimed to be male and two female and one "no answer."
Best, probably would be checking the predominate categories authors on the top 250 list write in. Pick out the female/male claimed writers of mostly GM on that list.
Taking what is claimed as gender by an author doesn't exactly get you Gospel truth, of course.
Well, I write M/M professionally, and I'm a straight female. I have to say my readership is mainly female, but I do have some gay/bi guys who read me too. I'm also very fortunate to have a guy who's a beta for me. I got my start here at Lit several ago with a series called The Harvest, and fortunately those fans followed me.
Why do I write M/M? I've been asked that over and over through the years, and honestly, my best answer is that's what interests me. I've made several good friends in this field both male and female and have become active in the LGBTQ community.
I no longer read M/F.
And yes, there are a lot of women who write in this field. Go to someplace like Dreamspinner Press (which is my main publisher) and take a look at the names there. Many of them are women.
Oh yeah, many do actually. Over the past week there has been a big brouhaha on FB about a very popular author who was *thought* to be a gay guy. Turns out it's a woman. And she's not the first one this year by far.
