This week at work, I was listening to an 'oldies station morning show. One of the DJ's made a comment about how Brad Pitt was "gorgeous". I knew what he meant as in being a good looking man. The other DJ's jumped him with comments about having a "man crush" on Brad Pitt. And went on and on about it, making the guy defend himself for his sexuality...i.e. hetero/homo.

I was pissed from the start...then became insensed at the complete disregard for the others feelings...whether he is straight, gay, or even curious...it makes no difference.

How does one complain and do something to stop/boycott this type of behavior...it must be corporate ok or it wouldn't happen.

I've already elimininated it from my pre-sets. I want to do more.

It's not corporate ok...until listeners start calling and complaining.....it's that...let's see 'how far we can push the button thing'..and then when there's public backlash...does the stuff shirt industry step in...and apologize for their behavior...whether it was meant in fun and jest...you're right..it's not right...why have to defend yourself...particularly infront of thousands of listeners???????....I don't personally find anything wrong when I can admit that there are some women out there that are beautiful in my eyes...but..there's where the stereotype sets in...what females think in other females...*IS OK..BUT WHEN IT COMES TO MEN*..IT'S COMPLETELY.....ASSBACKWARDS...when a man *can't* acknowledge that there's someone that they find attractive...without their sexuality coming into play..............

Exactly. It's a whole different set of standards. "Men" aren't supposed to admit finding each other attractive. OMG!

I really feel sorry for the man who...straight or not, will not walk up to a male friend and give him a hug in public. For fear of the reaction of others.

What has happened to our humanity? Everything is for sale?

no...I don't think it's that, persay, "up for sale"...I just think it comes down to...that no one has regard for anyone's feelings anymore...doesn't matter how you come across to someone..as soon as they have a 'set mindset' on ya..fucking forget it.......thing is...we live in a country that is rude..that has total disregard for anyone other than 'themselves' at that moment..and...that's where it all comes into play...and when...those that feel so TOTALLY uncomfortable in their own shoes..in their own sexuality..feels it's necessary..in order to 'defend' themselves <in their eyes>....it's better to bash someone else..then own up to one's own feelings.........isn't it so much easier..to pass judgement off on someone else...than it is to judge yourself....????????? fucking hogwash i say...LOOK IN THE MIRROR FIRST...BEFORE YOU PASS JUDGEMENT ON ANYONE.....

It bothers me when someone chooses to say what they feel, and then someone else has to take it and morph it into a verbal battle over sexuality. I don't mind saying that certain women are gorgeous, or even sexy, but that doesn't mean I'm bi or lesbian or even straight. It's just a statement of how one looks, not a declaration on my sexual preference. That does piss me off.

I totally agree. My anger was not based upon my sexuality. Although having been bi in the past, it gives me a special perspective to the situation the guy was in.

To have anyone, much less "friends" and co-workers do that is, like a physical assault...worse. Beyond the personal affront to the gentleman though...it was gay bashing by inference.

In a public commercial radio broadcast, I find that intolerable.

If I understand correctly, this was a music station? While technically it is part of the Media, I wouldn't say it represents a prevailing conception of the Media. It's not like it was on the news or even a talk show.

Even if it were, they all have the right to say what they want within the boundaries of the FCC rules and the rules of the company they work for and apparently that conversation was within those bounds.

That is such crock!

It was a music station, and a syndicated "Morning Show". These shows are scripted like most TV shows are. Then cut and copied later in the day for fill. The coversation was anti-gay by it's tone and demeanor. It set's a tone that it is ok to publically ridicule someone for even a comment about a same sex persons attractiveness.

Being within the FCC rules (walking the edge in my opinion) and being alright in corporate eyes just makes it more dangerous. And more of an affront.

find the address of the local station that broadcasts it. Write the station manager a letter.

Find out which media conglomerate owns the show, and write them a letter.

Then write letters to all appropriate persons affiliated with the show.

Be polite. Tell them how you think it perpetuates anti-gay attitudes. Maybe say that even if their intentions were good, that does not mean it will have a positive outcome... If you "playfully" tell a 'black joke,' it will perpetuate racism.

Definitely let me know how it goes. I'd be more than happy to critique the letter for you...

-Peace

*shrugs* They still have the right to say whatever they want, including the man who was criticized for his remakrk. And along those lines, if you don't like thier attitude then you can protest, but to censor them would take us one step closer to the kind of society that you profess to abhor.

That being said, could you specify how what I said is a "crock"? Have you heard similar conversations elsewhere in the Media that would warrant the claim that the view in question is the prevalent view of the Media in general? If so, where?

Additionally, I don't see why it makes any difference that it was a scripted conversation, except perhaps to support the theory that it was merely a publicity stunt, a 'shock jock' sort of thing specifically designed to provoke such a reaction.

To summarize, as far as I know the Constitution gives them and you the right to say what you want, as long as it doesn't defame a specific person. That is why the FCC (especially lately) is reluctant to make rules based solely on moral grounds.

On the other hand, your radio gives you the capability to change the channel if you wish. If you don't like it, write a letter to them, don't listen to that station anymore and tell them as much.

I am down to only listening to the country station...and I am sure at anytime now they will screw me over and gay bash. Sadly, it is the only way some no talent radio fucks can get a laugh from 40 year old losers still wearing zebra stripped Zubas.

opps...ranting

*gasp* You mean it's not a vast media conspiracy to oppress gay people, it's it's a couple of idiot shock jocks fucking off to get attention? ...naaah, I don't believe it! :p

Either or...I think it is the last acceptable laugh getter. Sad, very sad.
There is a DJ here that has done the same stupid gay bashing bits for years, and I do mean years. He is evil and very angry. My understanding is he is sick and VERY over weight. His health is somewhere around one foot in the grave...I think there is a God, and she is pissed. Pay back are a bitch.

LOL It is that demographic that is the bread and butter of this station. I like and listen to a lot of different music, and have not heard such behavior from the other stations I listen to. But then Milwaukee has a rather large and somewhat organized "community" of gays. And there is monetary clout there. I haven't listened to the station sinse. Thereby, not their advertising either.

Don't forget making fun of fat people. Although that's starting to be frowned upon too, which makes sense since 50% of Americans are overwiehgt, 30% morbidly obese...I know what you're thinking, and you're correct, that was almost completely non sequitor. :D

Vote with your wallet.

Don't buy the shit they advertise and suggest other people you know do the same.

Worked wonders for Dr. Laura.

Telling a station you don't want to listen to what they are selling is not censorship, it's not an issue of FREE speech but PAID speech.

Dr. Laura is a cunt, IMO.

That being said, I believe I was saying they should boycott the station if they object.

However, I did say expecting the company to censor them DOES concern free speech.

The censor free speech all the time on the radio, simply by stating what words are acceptable and what are not. I think making such a joke is cruel, mostly to the poor guy who had to defend himself. Its sad that something potentially humiliating was done so publically, and on top of it,it *was* anti-gay.

Honestly, free speech is challenged all the time. What is acceptable for our children to hear and see? I find it amusing the wont say fuck, ass or shit, yet have no problem publically broadcasting a man getting shot in the head in that very same movie. This isnt so much an issue of free speech, its an issue of making something that is important to many people a joke. And its not a joke.

Men DO sufer in my opinion, when it comes to showing any kind of affection for other males. My brother was always huggy and feely with most his friends, but he is straigh, this caused him tons of grief in many circles, yet i AM bi and me kissing a friend on the lips when i say hi doesnt even raise eyebrows.

And I also want to point out that making fun of fat people is still widely accepted, as well as treating them as if the had some sort of catchable disease. Its sad, but its true. The way we get people to listen to issiues such as this is by making known our feelings on the issues.

Write a letter, call in, do something to make it known how you feel to the people who pay the bills and those making the jokes. Sometimes it makes a big difference.

Always makes me sad to hear such things though.

Oh well :(

Actually, the word "fuck" is allowed by the FCC now, as long as it isn't used in a "sexual context."

Additionally, though your point still stands, the man on the radio was criticized not for showing affection for another man, but merely commenting on his attractiveness, which IMo seems even more intolerant as the man wasn't even homosexual (not that's justification of course) and he was merely making an appraisal.

Well sweetie, doesnt matter over much what the FCC says is sayable, it still isnt done almost ever on public cable. It just isnt. Its not accepted, they bleep out even words like "weed" or other drug references. My point is, that censorship on this isnt the issue, lets make it a big enough deal by giving our input to the radio stations that such things are happening on and make a fuss, maybe that will get a response, maybe not, but you never know with out trying.

Also, my point was simply that men cant show affection nor say things without being acused of being gay.

If i compliment a woman on her looks, people dont automatically assume i like sleeping with females.

In the same light, a friend of mine compliments a man and suddenly he wants to get some mansex.

It was just an instance i was using in my earlier post. Same thing. Men dont get treated the same when it comes to stuff like this as we girlies do. Its unfair.

Than again, who ever said anything in the world was fair, right?

Eh,

Nikki

I was refering to the FCC's broadcast rules, not cable. Those may very well be different. Correct me if I'm wrong, but we were talking about something that was heard on the radio (a broadcast medium), right 'sweetie'?

No, of course the world isn't fair, but that's no reason for us to just shrug our shoulders and allow it to be unfair.

Okay, so i'm confused. The title of the threat refers to "MEDIA". I understand that it was a radio broadcast, but i was refering to a larger picture.

I wonder why you feel the need to nit pick so very much.

I wonder why you feel the need to belittle an important point so you can call it nitpicking. If it were inconsqequential the thread starter wouldn't have mentioned it. I don't know about you, but I read the thread title AND the first post. Might want to try it sometime, "sweetie."

I like heated issues such as this.
It is such a simple answer as to why people bash others in the media or on the street...ready for the big answer???

THEY DON'T LIKE OR RESPECT THEMSELVES, SO THEY MUST MAKE OTHERS FEEL BAD TO MAKE THEMSELVES APPEAR WORTHY. so sad.

stand together or you will fall for anything.

~sighs~ First of all Nikki thanks for posting and welcome to Lit.

Second of all Stupid a/k/a Bitchslapper finds that by nit-picking, changing his opinion in mid-stride and references such as "sweetie" to you provoke a reaction. Makes him the center of attention, which he so desperately needs.

I did mean to point out this one example as a means of shedding light on the gay bashing innuendo that seems to be acceptable in a lot of the media. You were correct in that, as well as in by raising our voices and economically boycotting such media, making a difference.
