Misleading metaphor.

Hardworking farmer Grandpa, in this instance, is actually a loan shark. He didn't work a farm, instead he made his (capital gains) in the financialised economy, lending money at usurious rates to the real farmers and then taking over their land when they foreclose.

That's the wealth that needs to be redistributed. Read the link in my sig.

Okay, forget about poor Grandpa. Grandpa didn't farm the land, he rented it out to Mexicans and got rich off his rental money.... Typical Capitalist.

Look at Willie Gates, 50 Billion, to be divvied up to the poe Peeps, after they've been fucked out of 20 billion.... by management, errr, the bosses...........:)

Demos want to demo America.

well uncle obama has given America to China. some worry about China invading America, but why on earth would they ever need to do that (since obama gave them the key to the white house)

I'm betting that the 71% who favor redistribution dont include the Clintons, Pelosi, Reid, the Kennedys, and the Kerrys. Call it a hunch. Ooops, left out John Edwards.

that's okay Edwards is getting a free vacation. wonder if he can get those $500 hair cuts? thinking his love affair with john edwards is over, but I'm sure bubba in jail will keep him warm

Here again you reveal your stupidity. What happened to Detroit happened when the top executives of the Big Three moved production elsewhere. They thought their profits were more important than providing factory workers with obscene wages and benefit packages that were bankrupting the companies

Fixed it for you

Most likely his farm will be taken from his kids by a subprime loan shark.

this is EPIC! redistributing wealth is NEVER A GOOD THING

get a real job, government isn't a real job (your just too lazy and hiding from reality)

government is the place where people who can't work, don't want to work, or unable to work in the real world, work.

which one are you?

Dunce, you've already come out and said you support Medicare. Are you flip flopping then?

Delinquent Homeowners to Get Mortgage Aid from Government

The Obama administration wants to help more struggling Americans stay in their homes by reducing the amount they owe on their troubled mortgages, a top Treasury official said Saturday.

"We are very definitely trying to facilitate more principal reductions," said Timothy Massad, Treasury's acting assistant secretary for financial stability. "It is a very important piece of the overall solution," he said.

The administration is trying through taxpayer-funded programs to prevent homeowners from losing their homes. Nearly $50 billion has been set aside from the $700 billion bank bailout known as the Troubled Asset Relief Program, or TARP, to help distressed homeowners.

One of the administration's programs helps distressed homeowners avoid foreclosure by providing permanent loan modifications, funding to help reduce the principal of a borrower's loan.

Dozens of homeowners seeking ObamaBucks waited to talk to housing counselors and their mortgage servicers, who collect housing payments and negotiate new terms for troubled loans.

One housing counselor expressed frustration with the servicers, saying more people would still be in their homes if their principal was reduced.

"Servicers are not required to do it," said Shaneece Hudson, a mortgage adviser with the National Community Reinvestment Coalition. "Principal reduction is an option (for the servicers.) But they don't do it. They will do everything else first," she said.

Replace "servicers" with "banks" and you'll understand why banks today flinch at the attempt by this administration to enforce "redlining" quotas on them again.

Redlining

Government Mandates Lenders To Make Mortgage Loans To Unqualified Buyers

The Community Reinvestment Act of 1977 put forward by Rep. Barney Frank, Chairman of the Congressional Banking Committee, and signed into law by President Carter opened the door to todays mortgage meltdown by requiring banks and thrifts to offer credit throughout their entire market area and prohibits them from targeting only wealthier neighborhoods with their services. In 1995, during the Clinton administration, the Democrats added new provisions that forced banks to issue $1 trillion in “sub-prime” loans targeting to help the poor by lowering credit standards, not having to prove real income, and lowering or even doing away with down payments.

These lower standards increased mortgages by 40% given to people that were not qualified to own property under normal underwriting guidelines.

Rinse, Repeat, Redlining

wrong, the American consumer shoping at Wal Mart killed American manufacturing.

free trade had nothing to do with it, only made it easier.

side note, the Union destoryed American manufacturing also.

summery, this is what destoryed manufacturing:
government 1/3
the union 1/3
the consumer 1/3

not that you said this but I find it funny when people bitch about jobs, while buying goods from China at Wal Mart.

hello?!?!?!

Sorry, there is no longer any argument that "free" trade is what destroyed America. Why you would try to re-open a settled argument I don't know.

Again, as with blaming companies who go overseas, blaming consumers who look for the least expensive products fails to take common sense into account. They will naturally do this. That is why government must put tariffs on imports from low wage countries. Only government can solve this particular problem.

hello?!?!?!

Why are we continuing to argue about Medicare?

Ayn Rand thought it was good enough for her. That should pretty much settle the issue. :D

the school system has been screwing the tax payer for years. a job for life, that is a fantasy!

we also must end the government welfare, aka pension plan

The only countries that have public school systems that outperform the United States have nearly all white or nearly all Oriental student bodies:

The conclusion to be drawn from this is not politically correct, but it does not reflect poorly on the public school system in the United States.

Libertarians had their chance during the nineteenth century. We are not going back. Libertarians could only achieve their goals in a libertarian dictatorship, like the Pinochet junta that governed Chile from 1973 to 1990. Such a dictatorship would expose the lie that libertarianism is about freedom.

Even a return to property qualifications for voting would be uncertain. Many rich people in the United States are motivated by noblesse oblige, rather than selfishness and greed.

Most Americans say tax rich to balance budget: poll

NEW YORK | Mon Jan 3, 2011 11:15am EST

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Most Americans think the United States should raise taxes for the rich to balance the budget, according to a 60 Minutes/Vanity Fair poll released on Monday...

Republicans, who this week take control of the House of Representatives, want to extend all Bush-era tax cuts "permanently" for the middle class and wealthier Americans. They are also demanding spending cuts to curb the $1.3 trillion deficit.

Sixty-one percent of Americans polled would rather see taxes for the wealthy increased as a first step to tackling the deficit, the poll showed.

The next most popular way -- chosen by 20 percent -- was to cut defense spending.

Four percent would cut the Medicare government health insurance program for the elderly, and 3 percent would cut the Social Security retirement program, the poll showed.

Americans who claim to be reluctant to raise taxes on the rich change their minds when given a choice between that and losing their favorite entitlements. Those who genuinely want to do away with middle class entitlements are in a minority too small to consider.

Russia, China and Venezuela are much better at redistribution. I say 100% of the progressives should move there.

Interesting poll.

L_T (as various alts) and six others (so far) are in favor and everybody else is against.

I had to vote "yes" on the poll because the fact of the matter is that some transfer payments are necessary.

You cannot let kids starve because their parents are assholes. You cannot let someone who is retarded not get care because they are too sick to fend for themselves. If someone is critically injured and they need SSDI to live then you cannot leave them to forced into the streets and be homeless.

So obviously "Government Should Redistribute Wealth". This is an idiotic poll. Over simplification of complex issues does us a disservice.

No one's going to starve in America. Don't worry.

Wealth is redistributed by capitalism, which is a voluntary system to which everyone has equal access, and to which everyone can choose their own outcome. If our educational system actually taught that, no one would be dumb enough to think wealth was government's to redistribute.

I'm wondering when someone will actually define 'wealth' in this thread, and not their personal definition of wealth, but the economic definition.

We definitely differ on what capitalism is. Wealth is not redistributed by the function of the capitalist fundamental class process - The method for wealth redistribution not abhorrent to a capitalist is philanthropy. That is way to paternal for me. I'd prefer to have some collective decision making involved and that means government involvement.

I think we need to teach that 'government' is us and we are our government. It is not some "thing" or entity we have the right or the luxury to treat otherwise. It is the expression of our collective decisions in our republic. That is what makes America great, and we have to own our bad decisions.

And yes I agree we need to invest in better education.
