You can tell when a donut is freshly made as easily as you can a loaf of bread: There is a lightness, a softness, a wonderful scent that only lasts until later that day.

Some things have to be enjoyed in the moment or not at all: They will not wait.

Glazed donuts in particular have a crust that doesn't stay long: Crystallized sugar tends to melt.

But while it lasts, it's wonderful.

The bake shop was in a quaint north-eastern town, just far enough from the shore to be a well kept secret from the grubby hands of tourists. But not far enough away from her. She could tell if baked goods were worth the effor. She could taste quality ingredients. She knew baked Nirvana when she tasted it. And today, she had a hankerin' for a donut. Not just any Boston Cream or Jelly filled.. It had to be glazed. Oh yes, nothing else would do.

He was poor and plain; no one she'd notice.

Still, it made his day worthwhile just to see her. And if his eyes sometimes flicked to the deeply cut neckline of her frilly blouse, perhaps he could be forgiven, for the soft roundness of her breast was as simple and obvious a truth as the blue of the sky.

She stepped through the door just as he set aside the latest batch to cool. "Ah, Signorina," he smiled. "Uno momento, please. I have your favorite today."

The plump girl smiled and nodded at the plain Italian sounding man. "Yes, I've been waiting for an entire week, and I can simply wait no longer."
 
In his mind, he saw himself breaking off a piece to offer to the girl; imagined her stepping close, ready to receive his gift in her mouth.

In reality, he picked the donut up with a piece of waxed tissue and handed it to her carefully, watching the last bit of steam escape as she accepted it and broke off a bit herself.

"And perhaps some hot chocolate?" he inquired with a knowing smile.
