Maybe it's time for the Postal Service to consider cutting costs instead of another 8% price hike.

What they are doing is putting another nail in the coffin of demand. What a bunch of overpaid top heavy fucktards.

Well, they are starting to realize that their jobs are slowly becoming obsolete. Email handles most letters now, and as the computer illiterate population ages, this will only increase. Also, more and more of their package business is being gobbled up by the courier services. They need more money to pay their union employee's high salaries, so they think the only way to get it is by raising their rates. They are a giant bureacracy, so it makes sense that they wouldn't be smart enough to try and compete with the courier services on all levels to gain more business.

I have to agree with this statement although is another reason for their slow agonizing death.

Namely their decline in quality of service. Over the past 15 years the quality of service coming from the USPS has steadily gone down hill. It takes almost a week for a letter to get from Nashville, TN to Dallas, TX now. 15 years ago unless the letter got lost which was less frequent it took 3 to 4 days at the most for a first class letter. There is other issues involved but it would take to long to discuss them all.

That's what I meant by trying to compete with the couriers instead of just jacking up the rates. People don't trust the postal service, and instead of trying to goudge <sp?> people, they should be working their collective asses of to gain that trust.

Notice that UPS and FedEx offices don't have bulletproof glass. Nobody is angry enough to shoot them.

The postal service around where I live is great. Everyone in the local office is courteous, kind and helpful. The mail delivery guy always waves and says hello and is very kind also.

They have some pretty spiffy technology that moves letters fast and efficiently also. The new technology in the post offices that weighs packages is cool too.

They don't get paid all that much.

The volume of first class letters is down. The amount of junk mail hasn't decreased that much though. Even though the number of letters per-site might be going down, they still have to provide service to every location...expenses stay high that way. It's not like they can say.."Montana is too scattered..it's not cost effective to provide them service any more".

I agree that we should aggressively cut costs before raising the price of stamps. Nevertheless, I think well of the postal service people that I interact with and have not had problems with the service taking too long.

P. S. I do not work for the USPS and don't have any relatives, close friends or neighbors that do.
