Email handles most letters now, and as the computer illiterate population ages, this will only increase. Also, more and more of their package business is being gobbled up by the courier services. They need more money to pay their union employee's high salaries, so they think the only way to get it is by raising their rates. They are a giant bureacracy, so it makes sense that they wouldn't be smart enough to try and compete with the courier services on all levels to gain more business.

Namely their decline in quality of service. Over the past 15 years the quality of service coming from the USPS has steadily gone down hill. It takes almost a week for a letter to get from Nashville, TN to Dallas, TX now. 15 years ago unless the letter got lost which was less frequent it took 3 to 4 days at the most for a first class letter. There is other issues involved but it would take to long to discuss them all.
