Dr. Dawn Wolfenbarger pulled her hand away from the blue glowing scanner against the door of the inner sanctum of Peabody Laboratories. The thick bonded metal door slid open with a quiet swoosh, revealing the shadowed interior of the deserted lab. She stepped inside, the modest heel of her navy sling-backs echoed through the otherwise quiet laboratory.
“Hello? Anyone here?”
Her softly spoken question resonated through the lab only to fade with no response. A pleased smile stretched across her lips as she stole a quick glance at her watch. 12: 33 a.m. on a Saturday night. Everyone’s either out partying or home in bed. At least, those who have little to no ambition. She thought to herself as she shrugged into the pristine white jacket.
She tucked a stray strand of sandy blonde hair back behind her ear as she approached her “baby” – Her very own funded project. The executives at Peabody were none to happy about her tight-lipped reports, but reluctantly understood the need of the absolutely secrecy this project required, more so demanded. If word leaked out that she was attempting much less successfully completing the reproduction of a human… A shiver of dread ran down her spine at that prospect. At first the higher ups had thought her work was surrounding the reproduction of yet another animalistic clone. But no, Dawn’s dreams stretched so much further than that. Her extensive studies had led her to the revelation and belief that she could indeed find a way to reproduce a human - not some bloody sheep, but an honest to God living, breathing human being. It was toward the end of the project that her superiors had found out exactly what was happening – that it was not sheep cells Dawn was toying with, but a smuggled tissue sample of a living donor. The process had been allowed to develop much to far, and tied up way too much money to be scrapped now. So for those reasons alone, Dr. Wolfenbarger was allowed to continue, but only in complete and utter secrecy.
Dawn stepped up toward the growth chamber. Briefly the image of her face was reflected back to her from the gleaming surface of the large glass cylinder. Her gaze focused past that onto the vision of the floating body of the man she had created. Her smile widened, the pride of her creation swelled within her chest. The sample that she had obtained from none to pleasant means had developed better than she had hoped. The scanned and synthesized DNA analysis had proved promising, but the end result was beyond her wildest dreams. He was perfect.
Long locks of dark hair floated out from around a chiseled face and strong jaw as he floated in the liquid concoction of oxygen and a vast array of nutrients that fed and nourished him. His eyes remained closed but from the report of the analysis the iris’ should prove to be a rich, deep blue. He would be a tall man per the report, just a bit over 6 feet. His shoulders, chest, legs and arms were toned and defined from the electrical shocks required to keep the muscles from atrophy. Everything about him was developing perfectly. A rather roguish grin lifted the corner of Dawn’s lips as she regarded him – ALL of him. The ladies will certainly have nothing to complain about, Cain. She murmured quietly to herself as she stood there in awe of his rather prolific development.
She had named him Cain from early on. The first created man was named Adam, but with the controversy surrounding this experiment Dawn preferred not to utilize what one would consider the standard choice. Call it creative, or should that be creator’s license if you will, but Dawn had chosen to call him Cain from the very beginning.
Dawn dragged herself away from the side of the containment cylinder and took the seat in front of the control unit. Her fingers tapped in a rapid staccato across the keyboard, beginning what she believed would be the last of the electrical musculoskeletal treatments Cain would require. She would bring him out of the cylinder tonight – all the data supported it. A soft tone emitted from the unit as the last of the treatments were preformed. With the press of a button, a gentle grinding of the hydraulic lift transferred the cylinder from a vertical placement to that of a horizontal, allowing Cain’s body to drift gently down to rest his length on the thick glass partition beneath him. Yet another typed command and the fluid within the containment cylinder was drained completely. Another command and the cylinder slid back, disappearing completely into the wall, revealing Cain for the very first time to an atmosphere other than that of his liquid home - that which had been his home for the past two years.
Dawn rushed to his side, eager to touch him, to feel her creation’s flesh beneath her fingertips, but more so anxious to see him take his first full breath of air and utterly terrified that he wouldn’t.
