Dr. Dawn Wolfenbarger pulled her hand away from the blue glowing scanner against the door of the inner sanctum of Peabody Laboratories. The thick bonded metal door slid open with a quiet swoosh, revealing the shadowed interior of the deserted lab. She stepped inside, the modest heel of her navy sling-backs echoed through the otherwise quiet laboratory.

“Hello? Anyone here?”

Her softly spoken question resonated through the lab only to fade with no response. A pleased smile stretched across her lips as she stole a quick glance at her watch. 12: 33 a.m. on a Saturday night. Everyone’s either out partying or home in bed. At least, those who have little to no ambition. She thought to herself as she shrugged into the pristine white jacket.

She tucked a stray strand of sandy blonde hair back behind her ear as she approached her “baby” – Her very own funded project. The executives at Peabody were none to happy about her tight-lipped reports, but reluctantly understood the need of the absolutely secrecy this project required, more so demanded. If word leaked out that she was attempting much less successfully completing the reproduction of a human… A shiver of dread ran down her spine at that prospect. At first the higher ups had thought her work was surrounding the reproduction of yet another animalistic clone. But no, Dawn’s dreams stretched so much further than that. Her extensive studies had led her to the revelation and belief that she could indeed find a way to reproduce a human - not some bloody sheep, but an honest to God living, breathing human being. It was toward the end of the project that her superiors had found out exactly what was happening – that it was not sheep cells Dawn was toying with, but a smuggled tissue sample of a living donor. The process had been allowed to develop much to far, and tied up way too much money to be scrapped now. So for those reasons alone, Dr. Wolfenbarger was allowed to continue, but only in complete and utter secrecy.

Dawn stepped up toward the growth chamber. Briefly the image of her face was reflected back to her from the gleaming surface of the large glass cylinder. Her gaze focused past that onto the vision of the floating body of the man she had created. Her smile widened, the pride of her creation swelled within her chest. The sample that she had obtained from none to pleasant means had developed better than she had hoped. The scanned and synthesized DNA analysis had proved promising, but the end result was beyond her wildest dreams. He was perfect.

Long locks of dark hair floated out from around a chiseled face and strong jaw as he floated in the liquid concoction of oxygen and a vast array of nutrients that fed and nourished him. His eyes remained closed but from the report of the analysis the iris’ should prove to be a rich, deep blue. He would be a tall man per the report, just a bit over 6 feet. His shoulders, chest, legs and arms were toned and defined from the electrical shocks required to keep the muscles from atrophy. Everything about him was developing perfectly. A rather roguish grin lifted the corner of Dawn’s lips as she regarded him – ALL of him. The ladies will certainly have nothing to complain about, Cain. She murmured quietly to herself as she stood there in awe of his rather prolific development.

She had named him Cain from early on. The first created man was named Adam, but with the controversy surrounding this experiment Dawn preferred not to utilize what one would consider the standard choice. Call it creative, or should that be creator’s license if you will, but Dawn had chosen to call him Cain from the very beginning.

Dawn dragged herself away from the side of the containment cylinder and took the seat in front of the control unit. Her fingers tapped in a rapid staccato across the keyboard, beginning what she believed would be the last of the electrical musculoskeletal treatments Cain would require. She would bring him out of the cylinder tonight – all the data supported it. A soft tone emitted from the unit as the last of the treatments were preformed. With the press of a button, a gentle grinding of the hydraulic lift transferred the cylinder from a vertical placement to that of a horizontal, allowing Cain’s body to drift gently down to rest his length on the thick glass partition beneath him. Yet another typed command and the fluid within the containment cylinder was drained completely. Another command and the cylinder slid back, disappearing completely into the wall, revealing Cain for the very first time to an atmosphere other than that of his liquid home - that which had been his home for the past two years.

Dawn rushed to his side, eager to touch him, to feel her creation’s flesh beneath her fingertips, but more so anxious to see him take his first full breath of air and utterly terrified that he wouldn’t.

Cain

Life...I was alive...Flashes of light, sound....and the eternal feeling of drowning as thousands of jolts hit my skin....But I was alive...I could remember sitting in the chair as a white gowned man told me "This won't hurt at all...Just a small sample...."

And then somewhere after coming aware that I was drowning, or was it drowned and being brought back to life....Flashes of other images came to me as well...The angry face of a drunken woman as she raised her hand again telling me how worthless I was....Another terrified face of a young woman as I stood above her feeling the adrenalin rushing thru me....

Something was changing...The jolts of pain that had become a part of my "nonexistence" had stopped...Was I dying now, was this it??? And the warmth that surrounded me was slowly dissapearing as well....I could remember reading about the signs of death somewhere...I wasn't breathing, I felt no pain...and only the cold....I clenched my eyes close and then reopened them, yes...there it was..the light was growing stronger...

And then suddenly I felt heavy as air hissed past me, the light was uncomfortable and I clenched my eyes againn, trying to remember...I hadn't read anything about this...

And then I felt a pair of arms surrounding me, warm arms that helped support me as a voice spoke to me...

"Over here..We'll put you over here"

I found if I turned my head down I could see a shape....My head? Then I wasn't dead...and I choked and felt myself spitting up a fluid I had no description for, feeling it rush past my throat as I tried to speak....

"Ahm live????"

THe arms were strong...Or was I that weak??? And they lowered me to a flat surface, covering me with a warm blanket that I was grateful for...

"Tahnk Ouuuu"

I didn't recognize the voice that came from my throat....I knew I was alive and somehow understood I should have been dead, I had cheated death....And that was all, I didn't know anything else...Not the voice, or the body...or WHO I was....and with a wracking cough that seemed to clean out the final cup of liquid I spoke...the blackness coming over me as my eyes were opened...I felt so tired...

"Who am I?"

My final thought was the sound of a soft voice and a hand touching my face...

"Cain...You are Cain...."

Dr. Dawn Wolfenbarger

Dawn was so excited she could barely contain it. She delighted in everything about Cain. She nearly cried out in glee at the first rise and fall of his chest, turning his face to the side as he evacuated the last of the fluid from his lungs – mindless of the mess, focused solely on the fact he was alive. ALIVE! A blazing smile bloomed across her lips at the thought as she fluttered around him in a flurry of activity.

“Ahm live?”

Dawn froze in shock, dropping Cain’s head onto the pillow she had been attempting placed under it. OH my GOD! She whispered, her hazel-green eyes round as saucers, nearly overwhelming her face, He spoke! I-I-I mean you actually spoke!!

She was goaded back into action by the violent shivers that began to wrack his body. She grabbed a thick warm blanket from the heated incubator and threw it over his body, rubbing his extremities with it briskly in an attempt to warm him and dry him at the same time. The blanket dampened quickly, so she replaced it with two others, tucking the edges around him. Satisfied his body was dry; she snatched a towel and began to gently dry his face and hair, her eyes roaming his features, rejoicing at every breath, at every tiny movement.

"Tahnk Ouuuu"

The polite words slipped from his lips, barely more than a whisper. Dawn paused in her ministrations, and couldn’t help but smile. How in the world is he able to communicate? She pondered to herself, her mind awhirl. Surely memories are not embedded in dna? The mere thought completely fascinated her!

"Who am I?" He asked, his eyelids fluttering open briefly to reveal dark blue irises only to fly closed in a painful squint.

“Cain.” I replied in a calm, gentle voice, the backs of my fingers caressing his cheek and forehead soothingly. “You are Cain. Be still and rest. Conserve your strength. I’ll share everything with you soon enough.”

With a sigh, his head relaxed against the pillow and his chest rose and fell in a regular easy pattern like that of a deep sleep. Dawn wasted no time in having him transferred to a private room deep in the Peabody laboratories. Soon Cain was resting comfortably in warm, dry bed of his very own. ECG leads attached to his chest displayed a consistently strong, healthy pattern on the cardiopulmonary monitor – much to Dr. Wolfenbarger’s delight who had planted herself at his side for the entire duration of his 48 hour “nap”.

Cain

A second time I woke...This time to a reality I could believe, the painfully loud beeping of monitors...one that I recognized in the dim light of the room...I was in a hospital bed, and beside me sleeping in a chair was someone else I recognized...the woman who I first saw when I was ....Born?

Questions rushed at me...I was "Cain" she had said..Who was "she"? And why am I here? Instinct told me what had happened was unusual, as did her reaction to me...and the discovery I was able to speak...I needed answers to those and a hundred more questions that rushed at me...

I was warm..Unlike the first time I awoke. Warm and...? I raised the sheets that covered me and looked, yes I was...naked...Lowering the sheets I grinned, naked and well hung, if memory served me correctly for the phrase...And that too startled me. Memory? I had MEMORIES?

The flashes of pain, what were they? Recollections of my birth, or death? Again I felt uneasy, but why? Did I belong here?

I was healthy, my glance at myself had told me that as well...Perfect came to mind, no scars, no pain...as if my body was brand new...Then I didn't need to be connected to these machines anymore...I reasoned and began pulling the annoying tiny disks off my skin and gritting my teeth as the beeping turned into a shrill alarm...

The final wire off, I tossed the bedding off my legs and stood, stretching...I felt fine..Fine, better than fine...I felt strong, alive...and naked...I needed to dress, the voice told me...And by instinct again I opened a closet door, looking for clothes...

"Cain? What are you doing?" The voice asked from behind me...She was awake...Perhaps she could find me clothes? I turned to face her, seeing her eyes drop and her face redden;it somehow pleased me, a twitch in my groin at the attention, and I felt myself swelling, growing...as I answered her question.

"Looking for clothes...Do I have clothes? I felt the need to dress and leave this place...Will you help me?"

Dawn

Dawn awoke with a start to the shrill beckoning of the monitor’s alarm.

“Wha?! Who?! Cain!”

She quickly unfurled herself from her cramped, curled position and struggled to stand - the muscles of her legs screaming in protest. She darted over to the monitor, a slight frown creasing her brow as she took note of the flat-lined ECG.

“Leads off?” Silencing the alarm, she turned back to the bed, taking note of its emptiness. Her startled gaze flew around the room before lighting on Cain standing at the closet door. There he stood proudly, his back to her. His smooth, broad back she might add, not to mention his shapely well-defined buttocks, and definitely not to leave out the matching pair of muscular, well-toned thighs and calves. Dawn placed a steadying hand on the foot railing of the bed and took a deep breath. He’s an experiment, Dawn, an experiment! You CANNOT lust after an experiment. Geez! Get a grip! She gave herself a good mental shake before speaking.

“Cain? Just what are you doing?” She was rather proud of the cool calmness of her voice.

The calm, cool collected demeanor shattered completely as Cain turned to face her. She was able to stifle the small gasp that threatened to slip past her lips at the sight of him standing there, proud and nude, but she couldn’t have controlled her roaming, admiring gaze if her very life had depended on it. She could feel her cheeks burn. Hell, her very face was going to burst into flames any minute. He could have been the statue of David in the flesh. Except more, well, you know… flesh.

"Looking for clothes...Do I have clothes? I felt the need to dress and leave this place...Will you help me?" He asked.

“Clothes? Help you?” She repeated back to him stupidly. Dear GOD, Dawn! Get hold of yourself! You’re a doctor for Christ’s sake! His questions finally sank in and she struggled to regain what little bit of sensibilities she had left.

“Yes. I can get you some clothes. I certainly plan to help you, Cain, that’s why I’m here.” She said, still slightly flustered, her eyes pinned on his, using a considerable about of willpower not to let them drift. “Would you mind taking a seat back on the bed? We don’t have to put the machines back on, they were only to monitor you while you slept.” She said reassuringly with a warm smile, motioning him back towards the bed.

“How rude of me,” She said as she walked over and flicked on the lamp next to the bed, chasing away the dark shadows that lingered in the room. “I’ve not had the chance to introduce myself. I’m Dr. Wolfenbarger, but you may call me Dawn. We have a lot to talk about, Cain, and I’m sure you have many questions, no?”

Cain

"I have many questions, yes" I replied softly, storing away the knowledge of what the sight of my nude body did to her. I slid under the covers and noted her face color returning to normal as the sheets covered my legs and stomach.

"I'd like to start now, if you don't mind?"

"I beg your pardon, what?" Dawn asked softly, her face flaming red again "Start...what?"

"The questions, you mentioned we'd have many questions and I'd like to begin discussing them?"

"Oh, yes. Questions, Please do"

I smiled, sliding a hand behind my neck and leaning backwards into the pillows, watching her eyes travel across my chest.Yes, she reacted quite strongly to my body...

"I'd like to know if I am a who, or a WHAT" I replied solemnly, stating the question that had bothered me the most... "And why are you so surprised we are having this conversation? As if you hadn't expected me to be able to think....or talk?"

I had many more questions, but these were the strongest, the ones I felt would help me decide who I was...and why I was no longer?

Dawn

Dawn sat at the foot of the bed, precariously perched on the edge. Her fingers toyed absently with the frayed edge of the coverlet. Her gold-flecked hazel eyes lifted to met his, noting again the startling blue of his.

“You’re definitely a “who” not a what.” She said with a slight laugh, “A fully functioning red-blooded human male. As for why I was surprised,” She shrugged, “Well, I guess I just really didn’t know what to expect. I was certain you would have the capacity for thought and speech, I just wasn’t aware it would be so fully intact right from the start. You’re full of pleasant surprises, Cain.”

Cain

Her words confirmed another growing suspicion and started others as I digested what she told me, and yet there was more she wasn't telling me, offering me...

"I felt as if I was REborn, that I had died and was brought to life, but it's more complex than that, isn't it?" I questioned, watching her marvelous eyes "You look at me as if you've created me...and if so from what? Or who? From your reaction to my body it's as if we had been intimate in a previous life?"

Her eyes widened and red crept up her cheeks at the last statement...bringing a pretty flush to her entire face as I waited for an answer.

"Dawn if you created me, what are your plans for me?" I finished, waiting for replies to those questions before I handed her more.
