Friends Without Faces

We sit and we type and we stare at our screens,
We can't help but wonder what all of this means.
With mouse in hand ...we roam through this maze,
On an infinite search...lost in a daze.

We chat with each other, we type all our woes
At times we'll band together to gang up on our foes.
We wait for somebody, to type out our name
We want recognition, but it is always the same.

Soon friendships are formed - but - why we don't know,
But some of these friendships, will flourish and grow.
We give kisses and hugs, and sometimes we'll flirt,
In IMs we chat deeply, and reveal why we hurt.

Why is it on screen, we are so easily bold,
Telling our secrets, that have never been told.
The answer is simple, it is as clear as a bell,
We all have our problems, and need someone to tell.

We can't tell real people, but tell someone we must
So we turn to our 'puters ...and to those we can trust.
Even though it sounds crazy...the truth still remains,
Most of my "friends" have no faces...and odd little names.

:rose:

Ah, but they DO eventually have faces (even if they still have odd little names).

The shorter the name...

...the more important the person.

Like Ike for Eisenhower; Ali for some boxer or other; J-Lo for a singer...

Of course, I would say that, wouldn't I?

"I" am me :)

You have the beginnings of a good poem, yet it is rather simplistic, no?

You're going to be giving people complexes. I didn't think that happened until you started posting in the poetry forum. :p

We're probably better off not knowing what the others truly look like. A person's face can say so much about them.

I wouldn't call it simplistic. Actually, I think it is quite insightful. It doesn't scan very well, though.

I'd have included a verse or two about psychometrics and body language.

...and smilies.

Those things don't mean much to me. I can't interpret body language or smiles worth a damn.

Don't know if it's a form of dyslexia or the way I was bought up.

Words I can interpret.

You probably can Rob. but blokes are very unaware of them unlike the ladies. "It's not what you said, it's the way that you said it." (which doesn't take any account of the tone of voice)

I think there's a particular type of dysfunction called Asperger's(sp) Syndrome where a person (more usually boys) are almost completely unaware of any kind of nuance.

(The entire population of North America suffer acutely from a type of Asperger's which means they don't understand irony)

The poem was about communicating with others through computers, like we are doing here. How can there be any body language? No bodies are visible. Of course, smilies mean what you want them to mean. :)

Personally, if somebody says "Good morning" to me, that person is expressing the hope that my morning is good.

*ouch*
while i can feel the wistle of things whizzing by me head, i think there's nothing quite as amusing as irony.

But the questions posed were about anonymity. (are you American? ;) )
