I got lucky when I did Eurail the last time. Travelling across nine countries from Hungry to the Netherlands during the off-season (late November) often left us with private cabins and more than a few times entire cars to ourselves.

The night run from Budapest to Vienna had maybe nine people on the entire train.

I was once on a slow train with a 'standing ticket' because no seats were available, from Guangzhou to Shanghai (about 20 hours). It's good to be a foreigner sometimes. Several young guys (students they were) got to talking with me (practicing their English) which led to us playing musical chairs with their seats; we'd each take it in turns to sit down for an hour or so. It was still a tiring journey, but made more bearable.

And no, no T-shirt.

I had a similar (though shorter) experience on a train from Lisieux to Paris. A couple of young guys decided that I was old and frail, and that I should have one of their seats. I think it may have been the first time that I realised that I was on the way to becoming old and frail. :)

But it is nice when your Grandson asks you an intelligent question and understands the answer. . . .

I don't even have kids. However, my sibling makes their kids leave toys in the vehicle before they enter church. I still recall when my older nephew was excited about seeing his Sonic toy again @ end of service. I started singing the old theme song, & he jumped & turned around, asking how I knew it.

What's scary is when your grandchildren, or in my case grandnephews, ask if they can borrow your bong. ;)

What's a bong? Is that one of those little drums that were popular back in the '60s? They came in pairs if my memory serves. :)
