It is a little known fact in the USA that Rupert Murdoch the owner of Fox is personally very strongly in favour of Gun Control. He used his media organization to back strong gun control measures in the UK and Australia following the massacre at Dunblane Scotland) and the Martyn Bryant slaughter in Tasmania.

I would personally love to see some of Fox's more rabid presenters forced to do backflips on the issue.

If Murdoch decided to back some form of gun control it would be interesting to see, firstly, how the NRA would cope with such a powerful adversary, and secondly, to see whether US politicians might develop any spine.

Since when has any politician developed a spine ?

Oh, god. Listen to you. There are politicians who walk into the jaws of death for their constituents and the nation--as recently as in front of a grocery store in Tucson. Just stop the scapegoating and sweeping generalizations. Politicians are no worse or better than anyone else--and a good many of them, who could make better money with less grief elsewhere, are working their damndest to keep complex societies and economies in some semblance of balance while a good many of their constituents just sit on their butts and complain and make silly comments like you have.

Then why do we have a fiscal cliff problem, must be all those hard working dedicated pols?

Murdock vs NRA? This should be good.

Because the Republicans have more spine than brains. (Was this a trick question)?

Yes, a Murdock vs NRA faceoff would be interesting. We could ask The Donald to do the commentary on it.

I'd like to see it, but I don't think it's likely to happen just now. Murdoch is still in damage control over Leveson. Part of the problem there was the perception that he trades positive coverage to politicians in exchange for legislative favours, and part of his defense was the claim that he doesn't tell his editors what stories to run. Enforcing a pro-gun-control stance in Fox outlets would undermine that position.

@rupertmurdoch: Terrible news today. When will politicians find courage to ban automatic weapons? As in Oz after similar tragedy.

@turnbullmalcolm: @rupertmurdoch I suspect they will find the courage when Fox News enthusiastically campaigns for it.

For those not familiar with Australian politics, Turnbull is a high-profile politician who used to be leader of the Coalition (right-win political bloc, although Turnbull is at the moderate end of it) and is quite likely to be there again if Abbott screws up the next election.
