Are there some tricks to uploading docs from word without the formatting being futzed?

What kind of formatting are you talking about? The site strips a lot of stuff out for standardized presentation, so if you are trying to have paragraph indents and things like that it's going to be stripped out regardless. If you have specific questions on something you want to do, I suggest posting in the Author's Hangout with specifics and the folks there can help.
