Old bands, perhaps, but hardly forgotten. I'm not much of a country/western person, but i have an Alabama CD in my car, I still love the "I'm in a hurry to get things done" song...

Not true at all; quite the opposite. The younger generation today excels at being hip to bands like those. They'll know details about them that you won't.

While Ram Jam may not have much name recognition, their version of Black Betty (which I believe originated as a plantation song?) still makes the rounds on rock radio, and has for the past 15 or so years since it's prominent use in the film Blow (the Johnny Depp - cocaine smuggling movie).

I'd argue Venom is likely better known now than they were in their heyday, given the fact that black metal - a genre christened (heh) after one of their songs - continues to grow, after rebuilding itself from the Mayhem/Burzum thing in the early 90s. Having a genre named after one of your songs is pretty much the opposite of being forgotten. It's an odd sort of immortality.

Yeaaaaaaaaaaahhh..."Black Betty" by Ram Jam was #18 on the U.S. singles chart, and a top ten in both the UK and Australia.

Saying "you should check out this version of `Black Betty' they covered" is like saying, "you should check out this version of `All Along the Watchtower' Jimi Hendrix covered".

except that more people know who jimi hendrix was. ram jam were a fucking one hit wonder that no one really remembers. they know the song, but that's pretty much it.
