Talia followed in silence. It wasn't difficult to memorize the route, the long stairway must bypass many floors. This must be the Captain's private office where he could work and rest if need be should he have to stay close to his duties she thought before she was pushed into the room. She whirled to find the door slammed.
“Miss Carlton your ensemble is quite fetching my dear and the pale dove grey does suite your completion but it is time for you to remove your clothing for I have decided to take you as my newest concubine..”
She turned back to Tagaya with a frown. She could not believe that she heard him correctly. "I beg your pardon, sir. I came to see you for an interview, not to find a husband." She would not let this man intimidate her even though her throat was dry and her beat beat like the wings of a hummingbird. He was testing her mettle, that was all.
She knew it was considered bad form to look a Japanese in the eye, particularly one's superior. She did not consider the Captain her superior even if she showed him deference. She was not some Geisha he would do with as he willed.
"I would do as he says Miss Carlton. The Captain is a very determined man and he has paid quite handsomely for you." There was no mistaking Mr. Cumming’s sneering voice as he stepped from the shadow. "Now the Captain here knows what a woman like you is for, unlike the Major." Cummings caressed Talia’s cheek with the back of his hand.[/i]
Talia pulled back from Cummings and slapped his face as hard as she could. "You traitorous snake. You blackguard. You knave. You rogue. You scoundrel. You ... you cad." She ran out of breath and out of names to call him."
"Captain Tagaya our little Miss has been training for war so I am sure she will want to defend her honor. I shall leave you to get to know the Captain better Miss Carlton." Mr. Cummings turned to leave. Then paused at the door. "Oh and by the way, I will make sure that the major knows you have decided to cover the war from the Japanese lines and your baggage has been removed from Sagamore so there will be no rescue party to come and save you from a fate worse than death.
"I'll see you hanged for this!." She called after Cummings. She turned to Tagaya with fire in her eyes. "Return me to the Sagamore and we shall forget this ever happened. Do you really want the United States of America as an enemy? If I do not send regular reports to Major Pincheon and the Herald everyone will know something is wrong. They will come looking for me."
She would not be able to get the small lady's pistol out of her bag in time to use it. Tagaya was too close. It would have to be hand-to-hand until she could retrieve the knife in her boot. If he did overpower her, she would make sure he had a few scars to remember the encounter.
She moved into the stance that she had been taught. Her weight was evenly balanced so she could move in any direction. "It is not too late to do the honorable thing and let me go." She watched his eyes waiting for his attack.
