I recently acquired a copy of MS Office XP which includes Front Page. Now I am trying to build a webpage, and evidently this thing does not come wtih any images. Where are some good sites to download FREE backgrounds, clipart, and other images to use. I am searching but all these sites just seem to circle around back to each other.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

I cant honestly remember where I got images when I made a website a few years back.

Try going to yahoo or goole or some search engine and typing "free images" or something and you ought to be able to find something.

The only other thing I can think of is buying one of those cheap CDs you see in computer shops. They are usually called something like "10000000 clip art images!!!" (and most of them usually suck!! ;) )

Try putting the word of what pic you want and the words free and clipart in a search engine.... e.g. Seahorse free clipart

Google I find good for this.

Or use your photo program they have clipart in them you can use? MS Office should have its own clipart.

Try using a file-sharing program, such as morpheus or kazaa. They both allow you to download images from other people for free, and they have some pretty good stuff there.

The first thing you need to do, is DITCH Front Page!!!!!!

Next for images for to google.com you'll find millions fo things there.

Then get ahold of a REAL webpage software program, even some books to learn how to write your own HTML.

Finally, start writing. I've made probably 50 different versions of webpages for me personally, and some for family/friends, as well as for pay. The best thing you can do, is to LEARN HTML.

My 2¢,
Lo

Hey I use Front Page for my company website and I find them fine and easy to use. If I had six months free I would learn the Dream Weaver program I got given :)

TurnerBackwards, just make sure that the images that you use are copyright free and do not belong to someone else. I get pissed off when I spend hours making banners for my websites and someone steals them, or they use my art work in their website and don't ask me first.

I now have HTML inserted into most pages so it someone tries to right clik on the page a box pops up and it tell them that the text and images are copyright to me and they must get my written permission first before using them. Amazing how much email I get now asking for permission from Uni Students etc.

I'm not saying that people who use FP are bad, ;) , but FP puts so much CRAP in the final HTML, that could be left out. IT's FINE to learn on, but I wouldn't use it personally. I HAVE made one page with it, and before I gave the person the file, I ended up redoing it in another program.

The only thing worse in MY opinion, is doing a webpage in MS Word, now that REALLY screws up your HTML code.

Hell, when I need a quick layout right then and there, I'll even use the old Netscape Composer, at least that program only adds 2-3 lines of extra code in it.

I still stand by my comments your honor, (T.H.). :p

You mean... for over 4 years I've been doing my webpages the hard way??

I did my first webpage with a webtv.. learned HTML from scratch.

You mean there are programs out there to do it for you?

Yep, Front Page is just like writing in MS Word program. You can view it as you type, how it will show in the browser or you can click it over and see all the HTML.

I'll have to look into that. Although I love HTML (ok, i'm a geek.. sue me;) ) sometimes it would be nice to have something to do it for me, when I'm in a hurry.

Check out Ebay. FP 98 is better than FP 2000.

You can still take out or add your own HTML to it as you build it :)

You could always try Publisher. That'll make a webpage of @15mb out of a page that under straight HTML, would only be 35k including graphics.

Okay, I just went to school and took a web design class. Our final project was to make a whole web site on our own. WE were taught how to use Frontpage 2000. But, she told us that Frontpage makes code look really bad...Personally, I could care less but I learned HTML, Java Script, CSS and DHTML. I use Photoshop 6 and Paint shop 7.

If you need anything in particular just email me and I can either find it or make it.

I have a disk that I bought at the book store that has over 10,000 royalty free images. If that doesn't have what I am looking for then I usually go to Google and click Images and then you have access to billions of images.

The only problem with that is some of them are copyrighted and if you put them on a site.. you could get into some trouble.

You can check out mysite...by clicking the little www thing in my post. (you probably already know that:D )

What kinda site are you doing?

I use 1st Page 2000 from http://www.evrsoft.com It taches you how to do html in raw or by the popular what you see is what you get style.

I can pretty much now just compose in notepad thanks to what I learned with this program.

tons of cool features and user levels

Thanks for all the great advice. I realize that FP may not be the progie of choice, but like I said I "acquired" it, which means FREE. I got Win XP PRO, Office XO Pro, and MS PLUS! xp and it cost me nothing. I got a friend in the business. I do plan to learn HTML as well as some of the others, but this will get me started. I just want to make a personal page to place my pics, thoughts, and anything else I might get the gumption to place on there. I tried some of the online builders, but too slow and have to be connected to my ISP to use them. Do the books like "HTML for DUMMIES" do a good job of teaching or should I look for something else. Again thanks for all the info. Hope to have some soprt of sight up soon so I can put one of those cool buttons on the bottom of my posts.

Now after reading your post, and learning just what Aquired means, (STOLEN/COPIED), I'll say learn HTML anyway you can.

I'm not gonna tell you about stealing programs, you should know about that already. Just don't brag about it. That's the kind of stuff that makes people like me who make my living from such products, have to pay SO MUCH for programs.

And a person like myself that spends hours writing books for people to "aquire" the full book via a photocopier pisses me off, or steals my art work and makes money from it without spending all the hours I took to create it!

Every time you AQUIRE something you take food out the mouths of our children :D

This post is to EVERY one :D

Hi TurnerBackwards,
I learn all HTML by myself 4 years ago and now i'm working everyday as a webmaster. You could use a WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) software like dreamweave but your HTML skill will always stay the same, meaning very basic.... or you could try to learn and you can find a lot of ressources on the net, no need of books....
So to help you start I suggest you to visit some of those nice websites:
http://www.htmlgoodies.com/ (here you will find every kind of tutorial for the biginner and for the expert too)
-http://www.mediabuilder.com/ (everything about web design: images, backgrounds, animations....etc..
-http://www.jasc.com/ (get Paint shop pro, the easiet design software to learn, you will find thousands of tutorials.)

I think with that you had a nice start. If you need any advice or other link dont hesitate to ask....

Learn how to code in HTML. Really, learning HTML is easy, I learnt the basics in 2 days. All I did was find some tutorials on the Internet, read the instructions, and within 1 day of learning the basics, I got in to the Advanced. Now I am learning DHMTML. Know how to use HTML, and mate, you can do almost anything you want.
Using Web Site Creators, like Front Page are for newbies. I have never seen a Pro use them to date. Their code the HTML themselves, and this is coming from a professional Web Designer. Front Page may make it so easy, but if it won’t do everything you want, and it makes errors in the HTML, I have seen it before.... I company was making their Web site in Front page, it wouldn't work, so they got me in and told me off the problem. I said, "Easy fix, can be done in not even 1 minute". Except they wanted me to use Front page to fix it. I just looked at them, shock my head then walked off telling them their problem was using Front page. They did get their site online, but it is nothing like they wanted.

Most people think of HTML as stupid stuff. But hey, every web site language uses HTML. PHP, Java, Flash, CGI, etc they all use HTML. Trust me, if you want to make a web site, learn HTML, you won’t regret it. Even learn PHP and so on to be really good.

You can't stop every one from using your pics... They may not be able to right click and copy. But there is a key called "Print Screen Sys Rq" What this those is takes a pic of all on you screen, then you can go to a grapic program, paste the image, resize it for the pic you wanted, then save it. And there ya' go, they got around the secruity. You'll be amazed at how many do that, it is so easy.

VERY VERY good point O, which is why if you post a pic that is YOURS and YOURS ALONE, then you should put a graphical watermark of some sort over it, indicating that it is YOURS, not just anyones to steal. I do this very thing when I'm showing pics to people, over the net. the graphic is transtparent enough to see everything, but there enough so that you can tell who it belongs to, as well.

Again, the only thing this is doing is adding extra HTML, which isn't really much, but it's undeeded, becasue there are ways to get around it.

There is a ********** that will prevent the "common" hacker/curious ones from downloading your images or viewing your source code to get into your images and file system. Other than that, the internet is free range like Purdue chicken. :D

Verge don't just pick the first sentence, the next one said it all, made THE POINT. Java script WILL NOT dis-allow the use of the print screen.
