Hi Toni,


My heart absolutely goes out to you and your son. I know what a difficult time it is for you, I lost my own Mother eight years ago. Like your Mom, she was a big influence in my son's life because I was a single mother from the time he was born. I think, looking back, I see this as him having had a special opportunity to know and love his Gramdmother that many children of two parent homes miss. He had the opportunity to grow up in the same household as her until he was almost six. She helped me get him to bed, sang him songs, read him stories, marveled in his achievements... most of all, she gave him unconditional love. She was my patience when I lost mine with my extremely hyperactive son. As he grew older, she would pick him up after school, and keep him until I got home from work. Her home was always open for him, and eventually my daughter, as if it were their own. We were there every Sunday to visit until her final hospitalization.

Perhaps the biggest mistake I made when my Mother died was to hold my emotions inside constantly, not wanting to upset the kids, not wanting to lose it at work... That was the worst thing I could have done, it only prolonged my grieving process. All I can say is let your son cry, cry with him, hold on to each other tightly and lean on each other for support. You might be amazed to find your son to be your own pillar of strength.
