I know there have been threads started about this before, but I can't find the one I'm looking for..( If only Cheyenne were here).

My daughter had her belly button pierced about a week ago. Since then, the top of the piercing has become very tender and is getting red. I asked what she was told to clean it with and she said betadine. I know absolutely nothing about this and would like to know if anyone has any help on what you can put on it. Does neosporin work on this type of thing if it's getting infected?
Should she be cleaning with something else? Is it normal for it to still be hurting so much?

You best bet would be to call the place where she got it done. is she following the instructions they gave her?

I was told to use Bactine for all of my piercings. It took a while for my belly ring to fully heal. DO NOT use Neosporin. I think it will try to close up the hole.

Make sure she isn't cleaning it TOO much. 2-3 times a day, while turning the ring, is enough. Make sure she washes it with antibacterial soap as well. Yes, it's going to be sore and red, but it's normal. If the problems persist and it really starts to hurt instead of just being sore, take her back to the place where she got it done for advice.

I want to be a piercing artist, so...

This is so my department. Okay, a week ago, yes it is normal for it to hurt and be a little irritated, but no infection is good! BACIGUENT is best for treating infections, along with a colourless, scentless, LIQUID antibactierial soap. She should rince with it 3 times a day for the first 3 weeks. After that if the infection is cleared up, just use the antibacterial soap for a week or so, and then once in a while just to be safe!

Thanks. She is following instructions and cleaning as advised, but it has become so tender, she dreads having to turn it. I will pass this information on to her. Thanks for the link Debbie.
