The sustained economic war Ukraine is waging against Russia is starting to have an impact. The hits on the refineries are piling up and Russia can't repair them. The parts and technology for the catalytic crackers are in the US and Russia isn't going to be getting any new parts. Frontline report: Russia’s Pokrovsk offensive collapses into chaos — Ukrainian forces seize the moment and liberate Udachne​

Russia’s offensive around Pokrovsk has finally collapsed into disorganized, scattered assaults, exposing the total breakdown of its campaign. Seizing the moment, Ukrainian forces struck back with momentum, liberating another key town and turning the tide of the battle. The fighting around Pokrovsk has entered a new phase, where the intensity of Russian assaults on the flanks has clearly declined and their once grand offensive has fractured into scattered, uncoordinated attacks. What remains is little more than small groups probing Ukrainian defenses, seemingly just to avoid a complete halt that would openly expose the failure of the Russian campaign.

On the western flank near Udachne, Russian efforts have been reduced to chaotic infiltration attempts without any combined arms support. On the eastern flank near Myrnohrad, the story is much the same, with piecemeal assaults ending in abandonment of vehicles and panicked retreats under Ukrainian fire. The larger picture is unmistakable, as the Russian encirclement attempts around Pokrovsk have fallen apart.

Ukraine has seized the opportunity to strike back, and near Udachne, the lack of Russian coordination was turned against them. Ukrainian forces launched a deliberate push, clearing the settlement and raising the national flag over its center. What had been temporarily filled with scattered Russian infiltrators was retaken swiftly, with videos showing Ukrainian units inside the village. The half-hearted Russian attempts to regain ground have been nothing short of disastrous. Assaults sent down predictable roads ended with fields littered with bodies, creating roads of death that Ukrainians control tightly with drones and artillery.

A similar pattern unfolded near Myrnohrad on the eastern flank, where the Ukrainians knocked out a handful of Russian armored assaults, before moving in to finish off the remnants.

Overall, Russia committed significant resources and manpower to the Pokrovsk axis, throwing battalion after battalion against Ukrainian defenses. Yet every thrust on the western, eastern, and northern flanks has collapsed, leaving nothing but wrecked vehicles and soaring casualty lists. To distract from this, commanders have resorted to sewer infiltrations and other theatrics that fail to alter the battlefield balance.

With autumn rains fast approaching, Russia’s much-hyped summer offensive has ended without achieving its main goal of capturing Pokrovsk. Instead, Ukrainian countermeasures have not only preserved the town but have rolled back enemy gains, and Russian bodies littering the fields and underground sewer lines.

Ukrainian troops are on the attack in Sumy—and advancing​

Russian troops are falling back in Sumy Oblast in northern Ukraine.

That’s not surprising. The Kremlin has pulled no fewer than five marine and airborne brigades, regiments and divisions from Sumy and redirected them south to Donetsk Oblast, where a pair of Russian field armies are struggling to hold back a Ukrainian counterattack. Both sides in Russia’s 43-month wider war on Ukraine have shifted troops from Sumy to Donetsk as the battle for the fortress city of Pokrovsk intensifies. But it’s evident the Russians have weakened their forces in Sumy more than the Ukrainians have.

In recent days, Ukrainian troops have ejected the Russians from the area around the villages of Kostiantynivka and Novokostiantynivka in Sumy just a few hundred meters from the border with Russia, analysis group Deep State reported Sunday. “There are achievements in the Sumy region,” Ukrainian Pres. Volodymyr Zelensky announced on Sept. 12.

It seems the 810th Naval Infantry Brigade is the main Russian formation in the vicinity of Kostiantynivka and Novokostiantynivka. It’s the last large marine unit left in Sumy after the Kremlin concentrated five marine regiments and brigades east of Pokrovsk in recent weeks. Pokrovsk is one of the last major Ukrainian strongholds between hundreds of thousands of Russian troops and the main Kramatorsk-Sloviansk urban center in western Donetsk. If Pokrovsk falls, all of Donetsk may fall.

Donetsk is the priority. And the Kremlin seems to be willing to risk its gains in Sumy to make further gains in Donetsk. In addition to moving the marines to the east at the expense of the north, Russian commanders have shifted existing field armies in the sector surrounding Pokrovsk.

East of Pokrovsk, three Russian field armies and corps—the 8th and 51st Combined Arms Armies and the 68th Army Corps—face around nine Ukrainian regiments and brigades plus a few separate battalions, some of them under the command of the new 1st Azov Corps.

People like to say that Putin is 'playing' Trump, but Trump has held out every possibility for a peaceful solution. It's obvious that Putin does not want that.

Now is the time to savage Russia and anybody who buy their oil (their only profitable commodity) with extreme sanctions, and give Ukraine what they need tpo bring the war home to Russia.

More mysterious explosions in Vladivostok

A series of explosions early Tuesday, September 16, near Vladivostok drew a large deployment of Russian security services, including the Federal Security Service (FSB), local outlet Vladivostok1 reported. According to the outlet, nearly every vehicle in the area of the blasts was stopped for document checks. Authorities in Primorsky Krai, citing the regional anti-terrorism commission, said the “series of pops” was linked to the “use of gas equipment,” The Moscow Times (MT) reported.

Vladivostok1 noted that on May 30 a road was shut under similar circumstances. “At the time, witnesses saw a large concentration of vehicles, military personnel, medics and police at the turnoff to Shchitovaya Bay. A helicopter was flying nearby. It later emerged that a cylinder in a car parked in the bay heated up and exploded,” the outlet wrote. Only the vehicle with the cylinder was affected, it added, though relevant agencies spent more than three hours dealing with the aftermath.

Citing informed sources, the Telegram channel “VChK-OGPU” said the morning explosions in the Shchitovaya area occurred at a military site located away from the water. Public maps label it a “warehouse,” but the site may be Military Unit No. 40159, the channel reported. “Witnesses said there was panic and confusion at the restricted facility immediately after the blast. Over time, security forces and emergency services converged, and a Mi-8 helicopter was deployed. As usual, there are major contradictions in the versions being voiced. Authorities spoke of ‘gas malfunctions,’ but our interlocutors say there has never been any gas equipment at the unit,” the channel’s post said.

As MT notes, in early June sources told The Washington Post (WP) that Ukraine’s Security Service (SBU) was planning operations against Russia’s Pacific Fleet — including sending maritime drones to the Far East to strike Russian ships. Ukraine’s Defense Intelligence (GUR) carried out a special operation in the area of Shchitovaya Bay in Russia’s Primorsky Krai, a source in the agency told Ukrainian outlets Ukrinform and RBC-Ukraine.

Most Ukrainians see victory as achievable and reject Russia’s peace plan, KIIS poll finds​

About 76% of Ukrainians say victory over Russia is achievable if Western sanctions are maintained and Ukraine receives sufficient weapons and funding, according to a new Kyiv International Institute of Sociology (KIIS) poll. At the same time, 15% believe Ukraine cannot win even under those conditions, while 9% are undecided.

A hypothetical “European” plan — under which Ukraine would get robust security guarantees from Europe and the U.S., the front line would be frozen, Russia would keep control of occupied territories without formal recognition by Ukraine or the international community, and sanctions on Russia would remain - is acceptable to 74% of Ukrainians, while 15% categorically reject it.

By contrast, Russia’s proposed plan — lifting all Western sanctions; granting the Russian language official status; sharply reducing Ukraine’s armed forces and limiting weapons; permanently abandoning NATO membership; making Russia one of Ukraine’s security guarantors; officially recognizing Crimea, Donetsk and Luhansk as part of Russia and renouncing them forever; and effectively recognizing Russia’s control over Kherson and Zaporizhzhia — is unacceptable to 75% of Ukrainians. Only 17% would support the Russian version.

Regionally, 61% to 80% in every region reject Russia’s plan. Across all regions, 72% to 77% are ready to back the European plan.

If Russia’s plan became reality, 65% would view it as a failure for Ukraine; 7% would see it as a full or partial success, and 19% as a 50–50 outcome. For the European plan, 30% would call it a full or partial success, 44% a 50–50 outcome, and 18% a failure.

Methodology: KIIS conducted the poll September 2–14, 2025, via computer-assisted telephone interviews using a random sample of mobile numbers across government-controlled areas of Ukraine. The sample included 1,023 adults and excluded residents of temporarily non-government-controlled territories and those who left the country after February 24, 2022. Under normal circumstances, the margin of error for a sample of 1,023 (95% confidence, design effect 1.3) does not exceed 4.1%. Most questions were asked of all respondents. For the peace-plan question, respondents were randomly assigned to evaluate one of two scenarios (about 500 per group), yielding a margin of error up to 5.8%.

Ukrainian Forces strike Saratov oil refinery

Ukraine’s Special Operations Forces, working with other elements of the Ukrainian Forces, struck an oil refinery in Russia’s Saratov region overnight, Ukraine’s General Staff said. Explosions and a fire were reported near the facility, and the extent of the damage is still being assessed. “The Saratov refinery specializes in producing gasoline, diesel fuel, fuel oil, various grades of bitumen, vacuum gas oil, technical sulfur, and more — over 20 types of petroleum products in total,” the General Staff said.

The General Staff added that the refinery processed 4.8 million tons in 2023 and supplies Russia’s armed forces. “Ukraine’s Defense Forces are systematically taking steps to degrade the Russian Federation’s military-economic potential - including its ability to supply occupying troops with fuel, ammunition and weapons - with the goal of ending the armed aggression against Ukraine. More to come,” the statement said.

In late August, media reports said Ukrainian attacks on 10 Russian refineries disrupted at least 17% of Russia’s refining capacity, or 1.1 million barrels per day. The strikes disrupted processing and exports of Russian oil, caused gasoline shortages in parts of Russia, and came in response to Moscow’s battlefield advances and its attacks on Ukraine’s gas and energy infrastructure.

Trump administration approves first Ukraine arms aid funded by NATO allies, Reuters reports​

The Trump administration has approved its first U.S. weapons aid packages for Ukraine funded by NATO allies under a new financial arrangement, two undisclosed sources familiar with the matter told Reuters on Sept. 16. The aid will be the first use of the Prioritized Ukraine Requirements List (PURL), a mechanism developed by NATO members and the United States to coordinate and fund Kyiv's most urgent battlefield needs. The shipments, valued at up to $500 million each, were cleared by Undersecretary of Defense for Policy Elbridge Colby, according to Reuters. The packages could ship "soon" as Washington is resuming arms deliveries to Ukraine, this time financed by allied governments. Through PURL, allies pool contributions to buy American weapons, munitions, and equipment from U.S. stockpiles. The initiative could ultimately provide as much as $10 billion worth of weaponry, according to the sources cited by Reuters.

Since taking office in 2025, U.S. President Donald Trump's administration has sold weapons to Ukraine or shipped deliveries authorized under former U.S. President Joe Biden. The new mechanism marks the first aid packages initiated during Trump's second term. "It's the stuff they've been asking for. A lot of stuff," one source reportedly said.

In August, President Volodymyr Zelensky said that Ukraine aims to secure at least $1 billion a month from its allies to purchase American-made weapons. The plan also calls for a $50 billion partnership with Ukrainian companies to produce drones and includes at least 10 U.S.-made Patriot air defense systems.
