For Those Who Might Be Wondering Why We Might Be In Ukraine

Ukraine Forming New Artillery Brigades for Corps

As part of the transition to the corps structure of the Ukrainian Defense Forces, a “corps” set of military units is being created in each of these formations. One of these elements is artillery brigades. According to this plan, the old artillery brigades will be re-subordinated to the newly created corps, and new ones will be created.

Prior to the beginning of the full-scale invasion, the AFU included:
  • 26th Artillery Brigade named after General-Corporal Roman Dashkevich
  • 40th Separate Artillery Brigade named after Grand Duke Vytautas
  • 43rd Separate Artillery Brigade named after Hetman Taras Tryasyl
  • 44th Separate Artillery Brigade named after Hetman Danylo Apostol
  • 45th Separate Artillery Brigade named after General Myron Tarnavskyi
  • 55th Separate Artillery Brigade “Zaporizhzhia Sich”
  • The 406th Separate Artillery Brigade named after Major General Oleksiy Almazov
Obviously, this number is not enough to fill the “corps” set for all the formed army corps.
  • the 27th Brigade was converted from a rocket brigade into an artillery unit, largely due to a shortage of ammunition for the BM-27 Uragan multiple rocket launchers it was previously equipped with.
  • Another rocket unit, the 107th, did not retain this name, but added the prefix “artillery”. Now its full name is the 107th Rocket Artillery Brigade.
  • In the Ukrainian Navy, the existing 32nd Artillery Brigade also became an artillery brigade.
  • Another artillery brigade, the 147th Artillery Brigade, was created as part of the Air Assault Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and became part of the 7th Rapid Response Corps of the Air Assault Forces.
  • There are also reports of the formation of at least two new artillery brigades in the Armed Forces: 60th and 68th. Another artillery brigade was created within the National Guard.
In addition to these, several other artillery brigades were formed during the full-scale invasion, including the following:
  • The 148th as part of the Air Assault Forces and is now part of the 8th Air Assault Corps
  • 47th Brigade
  • 48th Brigade
Therefore, we may expect new reports on the creation of artillery brigades in the Armed Forces of Ukraine. Ukraine is manufacturing approx. 40 Bohdana 155mm guns a month, enough to equip a full artillery brigade for every Corps in the Ukrainian Army over the next few months and certainly by the summer of 2026.
