I figured I'd go ahead and start a link-share thread for those (like me) looking to start turning this hobby into a financial help.

First link.

Many genres and many different places. Seems well-updated, and I found it very informative.

very welcome.

ETA:

You know, I realize that not everyone is interested in this topic, but I still think it's useful. If some of the people in the Visual Arts Forum knew that there are magazines, etc, willing to pay them, and pay well, for one time use of their work, they'd probably be thrilled.

A lot of us love what we do- but it's becoming difficult to live to write without writing to live. Thank gods I'm lucky enough to do well with formula fiction- I can write about anything, given enough coffee and motivation. I realize not everyone is like that, but in skimming through these lists I kept thinking- "Oh, my. Selena would make a killing there!" or "I wonder what they'd think of Rob's "Abyss"? Or Darkniciad's "Home By The Sea?"

Not implying that those authors had anything to do with this. Tis my own little thing. Although, I may ask Laurel to make this a sticky- I think this topic has come up once or twice before.

I love the idea of this thread...I myself have contemplated turning my 'hobby' (read obsession) for writing into a second profession...Fortunately I'm blessed to have finally gotten a full time job where I can spend many of my hours writing (I'm a toll attendant on the graveyard shift) but it would be nice if it could suppliment my income...

Does anyone who's been published in any genre have advice?

One of Falling's many grasshoppers,
James

PS. I think sticky would be good, for what it's worth...

*hugs*

I just finally decided to go ahead and do it. I can write anything, if I have to- smut just comes easiest. But right now- I'm banging my head against brick walls.

I've been possessed by a sci-fi story that apparently just needs to be written...I'm already at 70+ pages typed, which I think makes it the longest thing I've ever written and it seems to keep going...Maybe I'l actually finish a novel for once! :p

And no more damaging walls! what did they ever do to you? ;)

I've actually got a story all formatted and ready to submit. I've even got the email written and the extra info sheet done and ready to attach. Except, so far, I've been too big of a chicken to send it off.

Darn, no one seems to like fiction that's over 5,000 words.

Not for Short Stories. I started out writting Short Stories, but when I finally decided to see if I could get published I soon found out that they really like what I call Novellas. These have a word count between 45,000 and 60,000 words. But if you can write a story with 5,000 words then you should have no trouble writing at the Novella length. Give it a try! :)

I can easily go over 10,000 for my serious pieces, but 45-60K? I'd really have to think on that a while. Thanks for the encouragement. :)

Ce rien, cherie.

Also, a couple things to note:

The Imaginings link is no good- that particular avenue is closed.

I'm having trouble tracking down some of the links they give on the Short Story list.

If anyone would be interested in maybe doing a skim through of recent offers on the AH for people soliciting work? Maybe post a quick what they want, pay scale (if it's available) and contact info? That would allow us to have everythign accessible in one place- I can go through periodically and either compile it into one post or post it on my bravenet site (although then you have to see my flash graphics, bwahahaha!). I'll try to get some of them together, if I have time tonight.

I've been checking out publishing opportunities at The Erotica Readers & Writers Association.

And as always, I'm stuck in between categories. Very few of my stories are short enough for a lot of publishers, mostly magazines.

And none are long enough for book publishers.

Can't win for losing.

I've sent out two pieces so far.

One was rejected. It 'didn't fit their needs'. That story is currently #1 of the BDSM top list here.

The other, I'll have to wait until the publisher has her baby before I hear anything.

OK. Done whining.

I found a place for Oggbashan's 50 word stories! Link forthcoming.

From the Jacqui Bennet Writer's Market list:

Short Shorts Can you capture the essence of an idea in a hundred words or less or tell a story that captivates, amuses or inspires in 300 words or so? Do you have dozens of coherent snippets that never quite made it into that 1000 word masterpiece? Can you make someone break out in laughter after reading a few brief lines? A new online magazine, launching May 2005, may be the answer. Especially interested in thought-provoking, stories and essays (short), humorous pieces and personal narratives that evoke emotion and suggest connections to larger themes or raise issues that touch the human heart. No payments at this stage and all freelance. But it is your chance to establish your credentials in a brand new market. Send a brief resume and one sample piece -- maximum 200 words -- to micro.editor@gmail.com

----

Chat pays £25 for a 60-word short story. Contact: Chat, Kings Reach Tower, Stamford Street, London SE1 9LS.

Honestly, I wish I'd registered for "The Writer's Market" when I had the online version. It really is a useful book. It has the same info as that site, but also tells you things like the circulation totals and whatnot. Very useful for people like me, who are more concerned with exposure to an audience than the money I recieve in return.

Nobody asked me to butt in, but ...

Unless you have close ties to the publishing industry, the best source for market information is still the most current edition of Writer's Market and/or the associated website. If you're reluctant to spend the $50 cover price for the book, it's available at all except the tiniest public libraries.

You might also want to post a request for info in the volunteer editor's forum. There are no guarantees of success, to be sure, but I know that at least three vol. eds. are pros with considerable knowledge of current market realities.

You could do what I did. My first two published E-Books are Anthologies of five of my longer short stories. If you could write five short stories that are each 10,000 words then my publisher would put them out as an Anthology. here's her Site:

I love to see new people get published. Give it a try. :)

Thanks for the link. I'll consider it when I'm ready.

Woohooo! My current project just hit 43K words (85 pages or so?) and I'm not even close to done...Sorry, just excited, I've never gotten this far with a project before!

Great going! You should be able to get that baby published once it is completed. :nana:

Here's hoping! And thank y'all for the kind words!
Actually there are a couple of my short stoies which I have been keeping from posting here since I wasn't sure about how publishing companies would feel about having Chapter 1 posted somewhere...Fortunately I still have plenty up my sleave to submit that it won't be a problem for a little while... :p

Actually anyone have thoughts about that? How would a publishing company feel? Would they refuse it because part had been posted/published already? Would they insist it be taken down afterwards? Would they love the free publicity?
