For the tentacle sex fetishists

Ph'nglui mglw'nafh Cthulhu R'lyeh wgah'nagl fhtagn!!!

The difference between real life and fiction is fiction has to be believable. ;)

Mmmmm... Calamari!

really though, that thing is monstrous and elegant at the same time...

Nothing like seeing it in motion. :rose:

Did you notice the way the body looks like shimmering silk?

Seriously, that is one weird critter.

Considering the earth is over 2/3 water, who knows what else is lurking out there.

Amphibious Daddy-Long-Legs?

Thats where the freely associating thoughts of my brian brought me.

Beautiful animal. I wonder why its tentacles are so long and thin...

I was intrigued by that too. Maybe it uses them as sensors like a cats' whiskers -- after all it's pitch black at that depth

It's been so long since I've looked at how squids work but as I recall their tentacles have dual duty, they are used to catch things, hence the length and as sonar receivers. Or maybe it was they have a seperate brain that clutches whatever it runs into.

Anyway, the deep sea squids are also hunted by whales, I forget which one so that in part would be a good reason to have really long tentacles, those whales are rather large. ;)

Whales wouldn't exist at such depths. Their body type would be crushed if they delved so far below the surface.

The creature depicted in this video feeds on small fish and jellyfish. It's body composition is designed to allow it to survive given the incredible pressure in which it exists. Were it to migrate to more shallow depths, it would balloon outward and be destroyed. Its tentacles are as long as they are because food/prey at more than a mile is a bit more difficult to come by. Longer tentacles means longer reach, and therefore, a larger "grazing" area.

Actually, Woods Hole has telemetry showing beaked whales diving to a depth of 1,900 meters. The ocean was 2,000 meters deep there, so it's hard to say if the whales would have gone deeper. Link

Sperm whales and elephant seals are also deep divers. Researchers from Stanford and Texas A&M used telemetry on sperm whales off of Baja and recorded dives to 3300 feet. And emap was right, sperm whales hunt giant sea squid. Link

Amazing what they find down there. Theres so much we don't know about our own planet.

I should amend my original statement, then. By 'exist,' I meant live and thrive at such depths. Numerous seagoing animals can dive pretty deep. But you wouldn't see them swimming around at 1900 meters casually.

Three great minds, with but a single thought (re: Cthuhu)

I liked the dolphins and the bubble rings, that was cute.

There does exist a site that tells you how to have...um, congress...with dolphins. According to the site, considering the size and power of dophins, you are safest giving them handjobs.

Ooookay, I'm... taking notes...
