I recently started taking birthcontrol and while the doctor explained the effectivness of the pill and so forth...

The one thing I am curious about is .. can you really trust the pill to work that 99.9% when taken correctly ( at the same day each day).

So far every thing has been going well with me and my man but a little part of me always seems to worry.

For example : last time we were intimate I was on my period and was towards the end of my pills hence taking the " sugar pills".

The pill is effective like all around , regradless if you are taking the first ones till the last set of " sugar pills " ?!?

Hope I made some sense and some one can shed some light on my question.

Thank you. : )

I was on the pill for something like 12 years, and never had even a late period. No system is 100% - simply because you have a human factor involved. But the pill does come pretty darn close.

As long as you are diligent in taking them, and suffer no ill side effects, you should have very little to nothing to worry about.

Some women have been known to get pregnant even during their period, but this is an extremely rare occurence - even among women using no form of birth control.

As a matter of fact, I think I even missed a day or two, kind of sweated things out a little, but never had any problems.

That's my .02 worth -

i don't want to scare anyone.. but i got pregnant 2 times while on the pill.. doc said.. it's only 100% if you hold it between your knees and not let it fall..

ok fine.. well guess what..number 2 baby was conceived that way.. ya know you can still get a cock in a pussy with your legs together.. sheesh.. you'd think a doctor would know these things..

You can get pregnant on the pill, but it is very, very rare. Freakygurl32 must be one fertile lady! I never have, and that's with 23 years of taking them. Jesus, that long? Thanks, I feel ancient now.
If you want to feel safer, figure out your cycle and don't have vaginal sex the 5 most fertile days of your month. If you need help with that ask your Dr. Thank you for taking the pill. Thank you for askign questions...

and pass me my geritol and my walker.

Oh, and welcome to the board!

I also, got pregnant while on the pill.

No method is 100%, as mentioned before. Make sure you couple it with a condom always, and a spermicide.

That will make it more effective. As to the condom, I firmly believe that it should never be solely the women's responsibility. Besides, doubling up is better for your chances.

And, with aids, who really wants to be the one who says it can't happen to them, only to have it happen to them?

The pill is very effective indeed. I have had friends who got pregnant while on the pill AND on antibiotics!

So, condoms and spermicide are always a good idea to use as well.

Good Luck and Be well.

SexyChele and all the other ladies :

Thank you for your replies.

Now I have more insight into this subject & I do feel better getting others' opinion on this ...makes me feel not so alone.

Thanks. : )

I've been on the Pill since I was 18, and I have to say that I love it! There have even been a few times where i forgot a day or two, but have not had a problem with it. The only time I had any problem at all was when I went off of it for a couple of months (I was using condoms instead). My period was all messed up, but then when I went to the doctor she said it was b/c my body wasn't regulated anmoye by the pills. She gave me something to indue my period and then recommended that I go back on the Pill. I did, and everything was fine! :)

Am I the only one who had side effects from the pill? Basically the pill works by fooling your body into thinking you are pregnant all of the time. You stop taking them for 7 days and have your period then start up with the pregnancy hormones again.
I had terrible headaches constantly and gained 20 pounds over the course of one year.My doctor switched me from one to another to another. I was nauseous (morning sickness anyone?) three weeks out of four. You guessed it! The week I had my period was vommit free! Guess how much I wanted to have sex while I was on the pill? It took two years and a nutritional counselor to get me back to normal.Be careful with the pill and watch closely for side effects. If you are going to use a condom too why not just use condoms and spermicide they are just as effective and don't mess up your body long term. Also know if you are planning to get pregnant anytime soon your body will require three months for every year you are on the pill to recoupe and become fertile again. That's just average, some take less time some take more.Sorrry to rain on the parade but I wish some one had told me so i could have avoided the whole thing. Then again I probably wouldn't have listened. The medical community has us all so brainwashed that we rarely think for ourselves. Am I bitter? Maybe just a little.

Ok, for starters, if you were having reactionas like that, they were not normal, and your doctor should have counsled you on other meathods after changing even once. I had an unnatural reaction, in that I got my period, and had it for a little over a month straight. We switched my pill, and I was fine.

The problem with ANY medications, whether it is birthcontrol, pain killers, antibiotics, or anything else, is that you are introducing chemicals into your body. Not all human bodies are the same, and some do have a certain sensitivity towards medication in general.

I agree wholeheartedly that a condom and spermicide should be used with any partner. But, I think they need to be used even if you are on the pill. The pill does not kill sperm. It just keeps you from releasing an egg, so it can't be fertilized.

In this day and age, there are way to many VD's to NOT protect yourself against these.

As to the pill, it isn't for everyone. After my first daughter was born, I decided not to go back to the pill. I am horrible at taking a pill every day. I choose Depo-provera. It did wonders for me for the year and a half I took it. I didn't have to worry about a pill, only had to do it once every 3 months, and actually lost weight with it. Not to mention, I had no period for that entire time.

A bit later, I had my 2nd child, and tried to go back on it. This time, it wasn't as nice. Sure, I had no period, but as my husband will loudly complain about, I also had no sex drive left, and I was as hormoanal as anyone with super pms. We stopped that, and did condoms for a while, and now, I am expecting our 3rd, AND LAST, child.

Basically, there is no 'perfect' birth control method for those who wish to engage in sex. Everyone is different, and so are all the birth control methods. Some convince your body that it's pregnant. Some will allow you to become pregnant, but actually 'abort' the egg with your period, whether it is fertilized, or not. Some prevent you from ovulating at all.

I highly recommend going in and talking with a counsler at a Planned Parenthood, or with your own OB/GYN. Discuss all the meathods, and before accepting any, do some reserch online to see how others deal with them, and what facts and myths there are about them.

It is something that will be apart of your life, so choose well, and remember that no method of birth control is 100% effective, and that most will not protect your body from fluid transfer. Spermicide and condoms are a must for anyone who doesn't want to risk a VD.

Hope this helps a bit, and sheds some light. :)

I had similar reactions. I also had very bad mood swings. The same with the implant and the shot. Now I just use the diaphram. There is no way I would put those chemicals in my body again.

What is the point of good birth control if you are fat and bitchy and noone will fuck you.

I forgot to mention I did the depo shot and implant too with the same results. My motto... Don't put anything into your body unless you know what it does or might do. If you choose to do it, then you accept the risks knowingly and have no one to blame but yourself. Be aware. Be knowledgable. Be your own advocate because no one else is going to do it for you.
