For MLK day.

If you wanna find genuine black American heroes the War of 1812 is the place to find them. They were conspicuous at the Battle of New Orleans, and served as sailors on most American Navy ships.

Or 10th Cavalry, Buffalo Soldiers.

Or the RED BALL EXPRESS. circa 1944-5

Or the First Cavalry ( Airmobil), '66-72.

You might wanna read some of the real history of the Buffalo Soldiers.

I did what you asked Jim but, just the 'official' history circa 1887. It seemed like they were used in the west to corral the wild Indians, ( Yeah Cloudy is going to bomb me for that.)

I've spent some time at Fort Huachua (sp?) and it is a dismal place. Horse Cavalry in 1880's was a tough way to earn retirement.

They were other places besides Arizona. Black Jack Pershing might be a good source to explore. He commanded the 10th Cavalry in Montana, its how he came to be called Nigger Jack, later Black Jack.

I read the Wiki and believe he was out ranked Mc Aurthur in more ways than one.

I agree with his independence of Command edict, the Brits were used to fighting natives and when they hit the Germans. It was different.

The transfer of the Black troops to French Command was probably a good idea because the French had African Troops and perhaps more respect for them than the Brit's or the American Army.

So Black Jack deserves his place in the MLK thread, good call Jimbo!
