Excerpt: Like many moms, Boehm lives for her children. At 68, with her condo paid for, she could retire. But her Social Security check is not enough to pay for food, vet bills and housing costs for her geese, so she continues to work as a bookkeeper for a San Francisco real estate firm.
The vet bills alone are staggering, but Boehm doesn't want to put a price on her love by adding up the expenses. If a goose is attacked by a raccoon and needs surgery or a gosling has a respiratory infection, Boehm takes care of it, hugging the animal tight as it gets veterinary treatment, whispering to it what a good boy or girl it's being. And when one of her girls is brooding, sitting on an egg for 30 days or so waiting for it to hatch, Boehm takes her to the aviary she built near the creek in Greenbrae, so the goose can get special care and sit on her nest in peace. In the wild, Boehm says, a brooding goose is a sitting duck, so to speak, for raccoons and other wild animals.
