GS, I will take the credit/blame for co-opting the "What happens when we die?" thread. I will even admit to having flogged it beyond the point of constructive engagement from the rest of the board. My intentions were otherwise, but I acknowledge the outcome.

I further recognize your indisputable right to come and go as you please, for any reason or none at all.

Still, given the stupefying lack of content and the appalling level of noise lately, I genuinely cannot understand what your concern is. If anything, board has swung to the other extreme; my style of participation is assuredly in the distinct minority.

Apparently you have other concerns in this regard, and merely found the moment ripe to vent a frustration. Even so, I am hard pressed to see how one thread, however annoying, can be so significant a consideration.

What is my point? I am not pleading for your staying -- you will do as you like, and clearly mine is not a voice you cherish.

I am not criticizing the process of another protracted, James Brown-dragged-back-on-stage retreat; that has been addressed many times elsewhere.

I suppose that as a presumptive target of your reprobation, I am somewhat resentful; not of your wrath, which is yours to apportion, but of the responsibility that you lay at my feet in what appears a specious fashion.

If you have a concern about the board, we would love to hear it. If you have something to say to me, I am all ears. If you want to go out in a cloud of mystery, be my guest.

All I can suggest is that if you expect us to understand, you'll have to give us something more than this on which to go. Even if you don't care, others might.

GS, you know your mind best, and seemed to make your concerns fairly explicit in your initial explanation. For the record, though, I point out that I never claimed to have been the sole, or even paramount, source of your discontent.

Take another look at what I actually wrote. Do words such as "Apparently you have other concerns in this regard, and merely found the moment ripe to vent a frustration [about me]" smack of egomania? Was it the height of arrogance to class the afterlife thread as merely a "consideration," or to refer to myself as only "a...target [among others]" of your dissatisfaction? You may have read this differently; all I can tell you is that I meant neither more nor less than what I said, and I see no sign of rampant self-promotion there.

You are obviously free to take what you will from my comments. If you are going to be angry with me, though, I would prefer that it be for what I have actually done instead of a misunderstanding.

One final note: I have no special affection for long posts -- I write as seems appropriate given the content and the context. Still, I am not unmindful of the recent undercurrent of grumbling across the board, and am aware that effective communication requires a connection on both ends. We'll see how it goes, but perhaps a little flexibility all around would benefit everyone.

As for your "Harmonic Convergence," it has but slept, and a fitful and uneasy repose at that; I have more to share, and am curious to hear your perspective. Still, I think perhaps both the board and I could use I break. Rest assured, though: the dreamer wakes.
