Ok, first I have to say, I have been a real sucker for football (and I'm talking about the real football, the game americans like to call soccer). I was attending games, watching every game on tv, following everything that went on in the world of soccer.
When I grew up, this passion cooled off but I still follow my favourite club, the important games and now and then get to watch a game.
But now something happened that severly damaged my love for the game.
Germany's football is going through one of its biggest crisis. A official referree was recently accused and has now admitted that he manipulated some games (especially games from the national cup and some second division games) and hence made thousands of €'s with bets. He also admitted connections to the 'bet-mafia', i.e. organized manipulation of legal sports-bets. He also agreed to cooperate with the d.a. and name his accomplices as well as several other referees and players. Insider now believe that this will reveal the biggest scandal in german sport-history.
Of course fixed games are still the exception BUT it makes you think. And no whenever I see a game and an own goal happens or a critical yet doubtful referee decision is made, you'll never be able to fight away the doubt.
I still have to wait and see how this entire thing turns out but the
consequence for me is that I probably not waste anymore money for those highly paid players and believe to see a 'clean' game and sport. It's just fucking sick in my opinion.
And remember, the Fifa World Cup 2006 will be held over here. Perfect timing for a scnadal, isn't it?
