i was just wondering if anyone knew the steps i should take in order to serve food (dessert) to the public? i heard something about a vendors? im not really sure how this works so any advice would be helpful!
thank you :)

i'm halfway talking out my ass here so don't take any of this as gospel...

i think a lot of it depends on where you live and how you intend to serve it (catering, storefront, restaurant, etc.). if i were researching this for myself i'd start at my state's website and go to their business services page. there you'll find a lot of what you need to know about licensing and stuff.

btw... i'm a huge fan of daniel's as well. :)

EJ, i found that state page your talking about. it all seems very confusing, i just cant figure out the order in which i should do things. maybe with a little more research, it will finally sink in!

btw... daniel  is brilliant!!

i assume you're looking in GA and i've gone to their site... there's a lot to look through and i can totally empathize with you. the best suggestion i can make is to take your time, take notes and on monday call the state's licensing people to see if they can give you more direct guidance for your particular endeavor.

when i started my business things were pretty simple... register, license, insure. for you i promise that insurance is going to be the biggest hassle with food involved. can you be more descriptive of what it is you're trying to do?

I can tell you how it would work here (in the Netherlands) but that wouldn't do you much good. Similar to here in NL the USA Chamber of Commerce site provides a lot of information for (starting) businesses. On their site do a search on "permits" and I'm sure you will find a lot more info.

Here, food handling permits are required for all food workers. It's a matter of going to the local health department, reading through the booklet that covers food safety, paying a small fee and taking a test.

So, your state/county health department might be an avenue to explore as well. :)

a food handling permit is a lot easier and cheaper to get than the certification for selling food to the public...

what kind of service are you planning to provide? selling at a fair, selling to stores, out of a restaurant?

Yeah, here too. You need your HACCP papers. You can do a crash course in two days for about 200 euro's. The funny thing is... in a lot of cases you can "use" someone elses papers....

As far as i know... you have to ahve a food handler's permit. in WA state, they're 15$.

but we're not talking food handling permits we're talking certification from the county to *sell* food, aren't we? Like how restaurants have to get the OK from the county, which usually just involves some money. and you have to have your cooking area checked out by a health inspector, and you have to apply for permits.
