Not networks or unions.

I'm going to list a few words and you're going to tell me what your first thought / memory and how you like it prepped- about the food item. I've been reading up alot on food and culture and I've come across a few good paragraphs and I'm only on chapter two of this new book.

Turkey

Spinach

Oatmeal

Ocra

Spaghetti

Egg

Martini

Now, here are a few different types of music, think about the music and tell me what food you feel is associated with the music.

Country

Rock

Classical

In time I'll edit this post to add some or take some away. You can tell me if you like it or hate it as well - just make sure you tell me why. Is it comforting, is it something mom used to make, only ate it around holidays, never had it, how does it make you feel, what is the memory attached to the food item - is it something you were told not to eat at certain times for some reason? Don't be shy give me a lil paragraph if you have to.

Thanks :)

Turkey - Thanksgiving dinner, with candied yams and lots of cranberry sauce!

Spinach - Popeye! Personally I hate the stuff except in a salad.

Oatmeal - Cold Winter Mornings.
Best served with brown sugar.

Ocra - this is even edible? Pass me a bowl of dirt please! :)

Spaghetti - My great aunt Essie & Josie's Depression Spaghetti. Take noodles, fry up some hamburger and wave some tamato over the pot. It was runny, slightly red, we had it every wednesday when we went to visit them when I was little. I miss those wonderful ladies, they had class.

Egg - breakfast, over easy so the yolk is still wet.

Martini - Don't drink. Sorry :p

Now, here are a few different types of music, think about the music and tell me what food you feel is associated with the music.

Country - One song sung to many tunes, all the same, guy loses his truck/dog/girl, guy cries about losing his truck/dog/girl. Add steel guitar twang for extra effect.

Rock - My brother playing his rock n roll on his stereo when we were growing up.

Classical - Some of its good, most of it is overrated.

Thanks :)

Turkey Roasted, stuffed full of mothers’ recipe stuffing includes sausage meat, onions, garlic, and breadcrumbs. Served with roast potatoes, peas, sweet corn, yams, and mash potato, plenty of gravy.

Spinach Washed, blanched quickly, and thrown in a summer salad, with radishes, lettuce, sweet peppers, salt, pepper, and a little paprika for some heat,

Oatmeal Used with dried fruit and a little sugar as home made Alpine, made the same but with a honey / sugar syrup added as health food bars (as trail food). Hot in the winter to give you a heated core, helping to make you warm all morning, (served with warm milk and honey).

Ocra I don't like it so I just don't eat it.

Spaghetti Bolognese home made spaghetti sauce, 8 cans of tomato sauce (Hunts for preference), with a touch of Garden mint, Oregano, Sweet Basil, Green onion, Parsley, Paprika, Cayenne pepper, rosemary, thyme, Garlic powder, Onion powder, sliced mushrooms.

With 2lbs of burger fried in a steel pan, with cayenne pepper, paprika, Tabasco sauce, Worcestershire sauce, and mustard, sweated under a lid, and then add 1 ½ cups of cold water, cover but with the vent open on the lid.

Turn burger into Sauce and simmer for an hour.

Egg With steak, sunny side up.

Martini Dry over ice on a hot day, keep the olives though, I don't like them.

Now, here are a few different types of music, think about the music and tell me what food you feel is associated with the music.

Country
Country fried chicken, catfish, or crabbies, french fries and some dipping sauce.

Rock Meat and two veg, staple food for staple music.

Spinach: Spinach salad with cranberries and almond slivers.

Oatmeal: with brown sugar. I have it several days per week.

Ocra: In homemade vegetable stew only.

Spaghetti: love the ground beek cooked and blended into the sauce-not meatballs-and I like the meat sauce and noodles all blended together and not just ladles of sauce over the noodles.

Egg: Scrambled eggs that are big and fluffy or fried egg cooked all the way through and made into an egg sandwich with toasted bread and mayonnaise.

Martini: not my drink.

Now, here are a few different types of music, think about the music and tell me what food you feel is associated with the music.

Country: barbeque with all the fixin's and lots of beer.

Turkey- Sandwich the day after Thanksgiving, with cream cheese and cranberry relish on sourdough. I remember loving this sandwich when I was little.

Spinach- Salad with Caesar or Honey Mustard dressing, a little mozerella or parmasean, tomatoes, and slivered almonds. I used to eat this at a cafe when I was young, and still eat lots of spinach salads in the summer.

Oatmeal- Lots of cinnamon, cut up apples, raisins, brown sugar, with a splash of milk on top. Comfort/wintery food.

Ocra- I don't recall ever eating it

Spaghetti-I think of a picture of me in a high chair with sauce all over and a caption that says, "Erika will eat anything that's on Daddy's plate" Now I like whole wheat pasta, a sauce with lots of veggies, kalamata olives, and feta cheese.

Egg- On whole-wheat toast, with a very, very thin coat of Best Foods mayo. This was something my dad made, and I still love it, especially when I'm feeling icky.

Martini-vermouth, which I foolishly consumed far too much of one time as a teen

I'll have to think on the music, but I associate Country with fried chicken, biscuits and gravy, and alcohol

There are no right or wrong answers - I just wanted to fill one out too :)

Turkey - summer camp. I would take a turkey on rye, mayo/let/tom/s+p everyday with a box drink... and this kid I was friends with couldn't say turkey, he would say "tuukey"

Spinach- Popeye, and that M doesn't like it and I love it.

Oatmeal- Farina. I hated oatmeal- still don't like it, but I like Farina (cream of wheat) with LOTS of butter.

Ocra- Southern comfort food that looks like the long frying peppers. I've actually never had it.

Spaghetti- sunday dinner after church at my grandparents house. 17 courses, meatballs, sausage, maranara, brociole. waking up to the smell of bacon and eggs... and onions and garlic frying in oil.

Egg- over easy or over hard, with rye toast and homefrys. Ex boyfriend over boiling them and the smell lasting forever after we tried to make egg salad.

Martini- "shaken not stirred..."

Now, here are a few different types of music, think about the music and tell me what food you feel is associated with the music.

Country - fried chicken, 'taters and corn.

Rock- pizza, fries, burgers, chips... lots of alcohol.

Classical- cheese, grapes, wine and crackers.

Re: Re: Re: Food Association

Food associated with Music? Sorry, guess I'm weird but I've never associated food with music.

Its not like I hear Pachelbel Canon in D or Bach's Brandenburg Concerto No. 5 and immediately think "HOT DOGS!" :D

hahaha, I understand. Usually classical music is the easy one. Many people say wine and cheese :)

But now that I think of it of it, I think of sushi - the NY philharmonic would play free concerts in central park... and We'd bring pickyfood and sit on blankets. One of my favorite dates with an ex boyfriend was one of those concerts and a nice big of sushi we picked up right before we got there.

and as for Pachelbel Canon- I think either wedding cake bc the song is usually played at weddings
OR
Perkins/Denny's ... because I was a band geek and after a concert we'd all go out and get food.

Turkey - pot pie, with lots of veggies, gravy and a yummy flakey crust

Spinach - creamed spinach, which I made the other night and remembered that I really never liked the stuff

Oatmeal - my mom's infamous oatmeal chocolate chip cookies (EJFan can tell you all about these)

Ocra - Never tried it, but I tend to have a fear of southern side dishes

Spaghetti - One of my favorite foods...I guess my favorite would be a good plate of spaghetti and meatballs or spaghetti bolognese. I've recently switched to whole wheat pasta to try and get a little more nutrition out of the stuff.

Egg - over-easy...cooked til it's not gooey, but with the yolk still runny, so I can sop it up with some buttered toast points. Mom used to make them like that for breakfast a lot.

Martini - No olives, please!

-------------

Country - fried chicken, beans, bbq, ocra, collard greens

Rock - pizza, beer, hamburgers, chips

Classical - wine, fruit, cheese, wedding cake, and anything "gourmet"

Turkey Thanksgiving - homey feel.

Spinach ick comes to mind then Popeye

Oatmeal Quaker Oats, cookies, breakfast (another ick)

Ocra Southern comfort food and fiddles, I've never tried them

Spaghetti Life giving ! lol Meatballs.....not much sauce - yumm

Egg anyway but sunnyside up..... morning comfort, for dinner - satisfying

Martini olive and extra dry... never had one

Now, here are a few different types of music, think about the music and tell me what food you feel is associated with the music.

Country fried chicken, biscuts, gravy, corndogs

Rock pizza and beer

Classical multi course meals, with sorbet to cleanse the palette between courses, seafood, meats, vegetables, fruits, cheeses, wine, water

Another neat idea from Blue! ;)

(Have I told you my undergrad degree is a BA in Sociology?)

I am beginning to suspect Bluesugar of using lit to do her psych homework. That or she's conducting weird mind control experiments by asking us these questions. :D

Fortunately some people, like Kissophile are immune to mind control. After all, you can't control what isn't there and he lost his to a goat! :D

:: grin :: sociology, psychology was last year.

Most of these types of posts come from books that I read for myself and for work - It'll bring up society and examples etc... and then I get ideas myself and ask everyone for about 3 days about it... then move onto the next thing that catches my eye. :)

Thanks for all your input over the years btw ..lol. No one ends up in papers, this is just for my own curiousity.

The proof of the pudding is in the posting. See above.

BTW, Bob, the goat says hello and asked me to remind you of your appointment with him next Friday.

Turkey: My nana's house, full of cigarrette smoke ruining a good meal; I love it in sandwiches and when it's fresh off the bird and really juicy

Spinach: Antonio's! A great pizza-by-the-slice shop near UMass that makes the best spinach pie pizza ever! *I want one now*

Oatmeal: Fresh baked oatmeal cookies

Ocra: ??? I'm so uneducated

Spaghetti: My mom's homecooking with tasty simmered tomato sauce

Egg: Omelets with ham, cheese, onions, peppers, and salsa...mmm, Sunday mornings aren't the same without them!

Martini: Never had one, but maybe someday

Now, here are a few different types of music, think about the music and tell me what food you feel is associated with the music.

Country: Not a big fan, but if a song is a good song, it doesn't matter what genre it is; I think of fresh baked biscuits and mashed potatoes

Rock: My favorite kind of music; I think of "junky" foods, like pizza, hamburgers, and fries

Classical: Being a band geek, I'm exposed to a lot- more modern instrumental pieces interest me more than the classics; I think of earl grey tea and scones when I think of classical music

Turkey: My birthday (always around Thanksgiving)

Spinach: sand

Oatmeal: brown sugar

Ocra: ewwwww

Spaghetti: everyone's favorite

Egg: Easter

Martini: breakfast

Country: fried chicken
Rock: marijuanna brownies
Classical: something really annoying - like pineapple pizza

Turkey Stuffing. Getting up early Thanksgiving morning to start the bird. The smell of sauteing butter, onions and spices.

Spinach Salad. Hard cooked eggs, mushrooms, bacon and sweet/sour dressing.

Oatmeal My little one eating breakfast. With brown sugar and maple syrup hot from the crock pot.

Ocra Yuck. Slimy.

Spaghetti Hot with thick, rich homemade sauce sprinkled with fresh parm cheese.

Egg Poached perfectly on a Holland rusk.

Martini Olives and a anchovy.

Country: Chicken fried steak and mashed taters.

Rock Funyons and Mt. Dew.

Classical Salad Nicoise and chateaubrian
