TRASHING THE VICTIM
We have a bit of an update on the Amanda Williams suspension from the Gwinnett County Schools. You will remember Amanda received a nine-day suspension because she pretended that some grape juice she was drinking was actually wine.

Well --- the Gwinnett County government school administrators are getting quite a PR whipping on this one. The Wall Street Journal picked up the story – and people across the country are wondering what in the hell is going on in Gwinnett County, Georgia.

So … time to retaliate! Gwinnett County government school administrators are evidently going on the offensive – trying to make themselves look better. What better way to do that then to make Amanda look worse!

One school official is quoted as saying something to the effect that “Well, I don’t really know that it wasn’t wine.” There you go … make the little girl prove she was innocent. That ought to save your reputation.

Another officials is telling caller that the school administration will be glad to tell the “true story,” but only if Amanda’s mother will sign a release. Ohhhhhhh. Strange dark hints of something truly evil going on!!!

Government schools. You parents who are willing, even eager, to turn your children over to the government to be prepared for life deserve just what you’re getting.

there is nothing wrong with government schools. i went to them all my life, and am still goign to one. and i'm doing rather well in them (or so i think anyways). just because the schools choose to instill a zero-tolerance rule to cover their own butts, doesnt make them bad. i got a good education from the government schools, and when i have children, they will to.

i think you should consider the fact that some people like those schools better than the other alternatives that are out there before you go insulting those schools. my parents would agree with me on this subject, as would a many number of people i went to school with (and still do). the government schools are only as good as what the people in the communities put into them. and many are great, much better than the private or charter schools that are available.

Todd, are government schools in Canada the equivalent of public schools in the USA?

Public schools both sides of the border are both Government indoctrination centers

if that's true, then how come i dislike all forms of government and think that they are extremely overrated and just outright annoying?

Todd- how dare you generalize about public schools. Just because you find a couple of articles about specific schools doing something less than redeemable does not mean that all public school are crap. I'm personally offended by that, being a public school teacher who works her ass off for her kids. As with every profession, corporation, and business, there are those in education who don't know how to wield the power that they're given. But it isn't comparable to the amount of educators in public schools who really try very hard to make a student's education the best that they can.

I'm sure that a lot goes in in private schools that shouldn't be happening; they just have the money to keep it out of the media.

Hell, he generalizes about everything. If a rat was found in a house in New York (Big stretch, I know), then he would ban ever visiting any house in any state in the US, because they would all have rats.

A succinct wrap up of this story

Girl Gets 9-Day Suspension for Doing What Catholic Church Does All the Time
Amanda Williams, 13, was suspended from Five Forks Middle School (Snellville, Ga.) last week for pretending out loud that the grape juice she bought at the school cafeteria was wine (thus violating the
“under the pretense” section of the anti-alcohol policy of the school system). She and her mom rejected a compromise to reduce her suspension to 3 days if she would attend drug-counseling. [Atlanta
Journal-Constitution, 11-9-01]

And a link to the story in the Atlanta Journal Constitution, with quotes from the mother.

Todd, I never thought I'd say this to you, but seriously, FUCK OFF!

I went to private schools ALL my life until my last year, which was spent here in the U.S. much like my father at the same age, and attended a (GASP) PUBLIC SCHOOL, read Government school.

I've never heard from any other Canadian who thinks that he/she knows more about the U.S. because of a couple of bullshit websites and articles, than from you.

The year I loved most was my last before going to college. Not because it was the last that I HAD to attend, but because of the people, the whole fucking environment, in fact.

Just because some choose to be assholes, doesn't mean you have to follow in their footsteps. God forbid you should have an original fucking thought that was any good towards the U.S.
