The problem is exactly that - someone has to make the judgment and it cannot be under protective - so, most politicians go overboard citing religion etc but in reality they’re just trying to cover their asses.That illustrates how UNITED the United States are. It also illustrates how subjective such age declarations are. It amazes me that politicians feel comfortable declaring their views and turning it into laws for others. I could never be comfortable saying 14 is too young for all 14 year olds but 16 is mature enough for all 16 year olds. Or, 16 is too young but 18 is ok. Or 21 or any age. Hard for me to imagine being confident that I had it right and hard to imagine wanting to make my views become a law for others. Maybe if a doctor examined and spoke to a young person they could evaluate the degree that the individual is mature enough to "consent." Some method other than one age fits all seems better. But I realize it is highly complex any way you dice it. Children do need to be protected so it can not be ignored.
