“Let’s go shopping, mom. We haven’t gone in a couple months.”

“Sounds good. Give me ten minutes.”

Most people thought it was odd that I enjoyed shopping with her and worse that I asked her opinion.

The store wasn’t busy, so we had two salesgirls helping us. The pile grew of things they thought I just had to try on.

“I look old and frumpy.”

I looked at the dress and made a gagging sound.

“I agree.”

The new voice startled me.

“See? Even strangers agree. I’m old and ugly.”

The man looked straight at me.

“I lied. You’re beautiful.”

I knew it for what it was without even having to look a her. Sheila could never tell an untruth without a little catch in her voice. Not something that most people would hear, granted, so I suppose I should amend that.

Sheila could never tell an untruth to me.

I'm not sure why that was. True, we'd practically grown up together. Her dad and my mom were neighbors with similar visitation schedules, so we saw each other every other weekend like clockwork.

I knew every one of her skinned knees, or bad grades, or blossoming romances and she knew mine as well.

"Danny, are you studying?"

"No Mom, tomorrows Senior Skip Day."

"This is Janice Webb, son."

"Hi Ms. Webb."

"Danny, we adopted you as a baby. She's your birth mother."

"What? I'm not...? You lied to me! I thought you were..."

"May I? Drew, she never lied. She's your mother. But I am your mother too."

"Oh man! Why'd you...?"

"I was young and alone. I did it for you. It broke my heart to leave."

"Janice loves you too, son. Can you forgive us?"

"Ah...yeah...sure. Now I have two mom's. Neat. Hey, ow, you guys hug so hard."

Tears spilled down Sarah’s face as she faced Reggie, enraged but terrified by the gun he pointed at her.

“Why?”

Reggie held up the silver cross with the ruby in the center.

“My mother’s cross? That’s why you told me you loved me? That’s why you spent the last three years lying to me? But why?” She screamed.

Reggie tsked at her and shook his head. “You really don’t know what this is, do you? That’s a damn shame. I was hoping you might be of more use to me.”

Sarah cried harder as Reggie began to pull the trigger.

“I lied to you. I want you more than you will ever know. I can’t let you destroy me though. You will if I let you.”

“How can you know that?”

“Your utter preoccupation with yourself? You as much as admitted it to me. You said I am so wrapped up in myself I forget things like birthdays, anniversaries.”

“Can’t you give me a chance to prove that I can be who you want?”

“Why, so you can hurt me some more?”

“No.”

“Why then?”

“To prove I can be who you want; to show you that I love you.”

I take you to be my partner in life and my one true love. I will cherish our union and love you more each day. I will trust and respect you, laugh and cry with you, and love you faithfully through good times and bad. I give you my hand, my heart, and my love, from this day forward for as long as we both shall live.

I will never leave you. Where you go I will go, and where you stay I will stay. Where you die, I will die, and there I will be buried; for only death shall ever part us.

That is beautiful TK.

I found it quite touching. :rose:

BTW, those weren't entirely my words. I simply culled and changed them a bit to make them fit this challenge.

“Oh my God! You asshole!” I screamed, slamming on my brakes with both feet and laying on the horn simultaneously. I missed plowing into the back of a large dump truck by mere inches.

The truck driver stuck his arm out the window and flipped me a nonchalant bird.

“Nice. Same to you dickhead!” I was still shaking. “Idiot.”

I took a deep breath and swallowed my hammering heart back into my chest.

“You know, road rage kills, Mom,” quipped a voice from the backseat.

I sighed as the light changed and traffic began to move again.

“I’m sorry, honey.”

"I never should have done it. That mooch!"

"Now dear. I'm sure my brother just forgot."

"Forgot my ass! He's a low life."

"He said he'd pay you back by this weekend."

"Well it's Sunday evening and do you see $500.00 in my hand?"

"No, but I am sure he'll be here."

"Damn! Why do I trust your no-good relatives? 500 bucks down the drain."

"There's the doorbell. Come in. Oh, hello Ron."

"Hi Sis. Hi Bob. Here's that five hundred I owe you."

"Uh...er...thanks Ron. I knew you were good for it."

"So you said dear."

The glow of the morning sun awakened Marsha. Her first thoughts were of him. That cheating sonofabitch. How could he have done this? She should have seen it coming, but she lived in blissful ignorance until he told her he was leaving. With that slut! She felt her cheeks grow red and her body shook. She kicked the blanket from her, her fists clenched, her jaw set.

"Mommy? Are you awake?"

"Sure. C'mon in girls."

The twins jumped on the bed and cuddled up to her.

"We love you Mommy," they chorused.

Her body relaxed. They were still a family.

Rage, hot and red, choked her, causing her teeth and hands to clench, flaming her face and lips. Her vision blurred crimson with blood lust—an overwhelming desire to claw and slash, scarlet nails tearing rosy flesh, blood overflowing, droplets falling like ruby rain to stain the floor. Blood curdling screams sang as the flames leapt and danced in her sanguine visions, boiling lava overflowing her brain.

Carmine lips—agents of lust, cherry valentines, instruments of deceit—parted, their edges curling upward, gleaming white teeth peeking through.

“There you are, darling. Come meet an old friend.”

Smiling lips, then tranquil azure eyes drew her forward. Her hot flush faded to rose, then pink. She grasped the outstretched hand, her hot skin a contrast to the cool blue-veined fingers of her lover. The sharp edges of her anger blew away on the balmy breeze of the sapphire night, dulling it to a maroon-tinged ache. Her eyes focused on the icy aquamarine stone at her lover’s throat. The gift of love twinkled and winked, as its watery depths extinguished the remaining flames in her soul.

Smiling, she extended her other hand to the stranger and met his indigo gaze.

He fucking hated being second choice, second fiddle, second rate, secondary. Even the words just sounded shitty. He remembered the saying “Second place is first loser.” That’s what he felt like. A big loser. Especially when he couldn’t stand the guy in first place.

She said she was “keeping her options open.” Well, what the fuck did that mean? The connection—the chemistry—between them had seemed so strong. Had he been wrong about that? Didn’t she feel the same way?

He was tired of making an ass of himself. It had to stop. He was done stroking her ego.

Ok, who's next? :)

7/10 Anger

He had never forgotten how she had tried to control him, smothering him until he fled into the malestrom of life. Thousands of miles away he began anew, changing his name so she couldn't find him. Then the news announced the death of his brother. He entered the funeral parlor, dreading it. There she sat, back stiff, piercing dark eyes, her thin lipped mouth like a bloody wound. How he hated her. He felt a rush of anger. How she had degraded him, calling him worthless. He would pay his respects and return home, nothing more.

"Hello Mother," he said.

"Raise the Jolly Roger," cried Captain Blood. "It be a rich merchantman ripe for the picking." When the pirate ship sailed closer, hidden cannon boomed. "Avast," bellowed Captain Blood. "It be a decoy ship. A pox on the British Navy. Return fire, men." The pirate ships guns roared in response. "Blast them, they hit the mizzenmast," Captain Blood hollered in a fury. "Hah, we hit their for'ard top'sils. Keep firing me hearties." Then he saw the British captain raise his hailing trumpet and the dreaded words rang out.

"Billy, time for bed."

"I'll be right there mama," Captain Blood replied.

James swung, hearing a satisfying crunch as Zack's nose broke. Zack fell to the ground and James was on top of him, his knees pinning down Zack's arms as he pummeled his face again and again.

Zack was crying by now. Tears, snot and blood ran down his face and the red mark across his cheek and forehead were quickly darkening into nasty bruises. James grabbed the front of Zack’s shirt and dragged him to his feet.

“That’s what you get, you stupid shit head. Now take me to my little brother’s bike and give him back his lunch money.”

"Why is that cop following me?" Margie muttered. "He's been after me since I left the market. I'm only going 40." She turned left and the car followed. "Dammit," She fumed,"What's he want? To meet his ticket quota?" Another turn, the police followed. "Jeez, pull me over then," she raged. "Gimmie the ticket and be done."

They pulled into her driveway. The officers jumped from the cruiser, pistols drawn.

"Get away from there. A man is hiding in the back seat."

Margie screamed and ran. The man emerged and was arrested.

"Thank you very much officers," said Margie sheepishly.

“No, Mom. I’m not going to the bars every night.”

“Your turn, Gina. You’re blue.” She rolled a seven, moved her piece the number of spaces and knocked Rob back to his home base. Rob unzipped his jeans and tossed them aside.

“Most of the time we stay in and play board games.”

“Three for me. Great!” Sam was now totally naked.

“A bunch of us are playing Parcheesi right now. It’s my roll. ”

Carrie took her turn, smiling as she unfastened her bra.

“Of course. Parcheesi is fun. Bye, Mom.”

“But Coed Strip Parcheesi is even more fun.”
