9/10 Books

Tommy gazed through the window at the book. It was just the right size, and the most delightful drawing of a blue-jacketed rabbit graced its cover. His mouth nearly watered at the thought of smoothing his fingers over the creamy pages. Tommy had no books of his own and knew he likely never would.

He looked up as the bell on the shop door tinkled. A bespectacled lady emerged with a smile and a twinkle in her eye. She handed Tommy the book, turned on her heel, and was gone.

Opening the cover, he read the words scrawled inside: Best regards, Beatrix Potter.

Thats a cutie, TK. Those Beatrix Potter books will never grow old. :D

I guess it's up to me to close this subject out and I just happen to have an idea.

"Hey Jimmy, Mr. Bailey's got the new comic books in."

"Wow! Who's your favorite?"

"I dunno, Captain Marvel maybe."

"I like Superman. I bet he's stronger than Captain Marvel."

"Nah. Hey look, Submariner's captured the Human Torch. Bet he burns his way out."

"Aw, he always does. Hey, here's a new comic. The Justice League of America. I want this one."

"I'll get Spy Smasher. My brother reads him. He's a senior this year."

"Why'd Mr. Bailey turn the radio up? A special bulletin? What are they talking about?"

"I dunno, but why's he crying? And where's Pearl Harbor anyway?"

Holy shit, TE. Well done.

Thank you kindly, Lee.

“Beautiful beaches, crystal clear waters, the tropical breeze. What more could you want, sweetheart?” Jake asked.

“You could pull me up for starters!” Cheryl yelled, still clutching the diamond in her left hand while her right gripped the tree root sticking from the side of the steep cliff she had nearly been thrown over.

Jake reached down and grabbed her arm, pulling her onto safe ground. Laying there panting, she held the diamond at him in a threatening manner.

“Next time, *you* get the treasure and *I* fight the armed thugs!”

Jake smiled as he helped her up. “Yes, dear.”

Summer vacation
By Tommy

We climbed trees. Jimmy signed my cast when we got back from the hospital.
We played pirates. I thought my arm would be okay with a bandaid. My mother made me get stitches. We explored the woods. I got poison ivy and medicine from the emergency room. Lizards do not make good pets. They bite. I had to get a shot. The nurses at the clinic all know my name now. We’re friends.

When I told my mother today was the first day of school, she grinned and said it was her first day of vacation. :)

Vacation

When I was young, summer vacation was our trip to the seashore and the cottage my parents owned. Preparing for this trek meant making lists, filling boxes of provisions, packing clothes and loading the station wagon to bursting.

The first smell of salt air was always exciting to my brother and I. Seeing the cottage was like meeting a friend who beckoned us in. Before we knew it summer was over and we went home tanned and happy.

Now my grandchildren play on the beach and another summer has begun. Our old friend has welcomed us once again. I am content.

I was surprised that the light was on, as I entered the office. A thump came from the cubicle area and I cautiously advanced towards the sound.

Greg popped up from the last cubicle. “Hey, Rihanna! What are you doing here?”

“I forgot my camera.” I was hours away from taking my annual Thanksgiving’s Day flight to Phoenix.

“Right, well....”

“So you’re putting in some overtime?” I spotted the Manolo Blahniks of Director Wynn peeking beneath the cubicle wall.

“Yep.”

“Well, I’m sure the Director is thankful for your hard work. And I’m thankful that my vacation just got extended.”

"Mom, why can't we go somewhere else this time?"

"Stop whining. You know why we can't."

"No, I don't."

"Danny, please stop it. You're giving me a headache."

"But we go there every year!"

"Yes, and you know your grandparents love to have you."

"It's too boring with them."

"Don't say that. You can play in the orchards and eat all that wonderful jam that Nanna makes. Now sit up straight. We're almost there."

"All my friends are going to nice places. Gary's going to Australia. Cindy's parents are taking her to Egypt, to the Pyramids and..."

"Danny. Sweetie, I just...can't, okay? We don't have enough money. I'm sorry."

The suitcases were packed.

“Mommy is grandma ‘cited we’re coming to her house?”

“She’s very excited.”

“Okay, everyone, let’s go get in the car!”

“Daddy, Jason pushed me.”

We looked at each other and sighed.

An hour more to the airport and it had started already.

“Where’s my baby doll?”

“You hit me first.”

“No more fighting.”

“It will be so cool on the airplane.”

“Mommy I don’t wanna fly.”

“Penny, it’s okay. Why don’t you color a picture for grandma.”

The next forty-five minutes passed in relative silence.

Then I heard the dreaded words.

“Do you have the tickets?”

Vacations

She dreamed of going to faraway places. She collected travel brochures full of glossy pictures and bold print extolling the virtues of lands she had to look up in the atlas. The rainforest, sultry and steamy, lush with vibrant, vivid flora and fauna. Cosmopolitan cities that tasted of rich cuisine, spicy and savory, in her mouth. Mountains with snow-covered peaks, so crisp and cold, she was refreshed just touching the pages.

She dreamed of going to faraway places. She sat in her armchair, her cat purring on her lap. She counted the money she’d saved.

“Maybe next year,” she whispered.

“What’s on your list for today?”

“If we go west out of town on this road there’s a scenic lookout, then a place called Ozone Falls. That should take us until about noon and just a little further west is a town…”

“Okay. I’m ready.”

“Did you even listen to what I said?”

“Yes, I heard. West.”

“You don’t sound excited.”

“It’s fine. Let’s go.”

“If you have a better idea…”

“This is a great idea. Let’s go.”

We walked past the hotel pool filled with lounging guests.

Now they knew what to do on vacation, I thought with envy.

Utter relaxation. Sitting upon the bank of the lake, shaded by a tree, he watched the wind ripple the water. Other than the wind in the tree, the occasional bird call, it was utter quiet. No phone ringing, no computer dinging about the next meeting that might just actually require his presence. Here he found a peace to reestablish his energy and recharge, a chance to breath. A cloud covered the Sun, distracting his thoughts from the rhythmic ripples. Looking at his watch, he checked the time, verifying what his internal clock was telling him. Yes, lunch break was over.

“Having a great time. Wish you were here.” It was the traditional thing to write on vacation postcards, but it was all lies. She wasn’t having a good time. She’d gotten sunburned the first day and spent that night kicking herself for not using sun block. She’d tripped on the sidewalk, skinning her knees. The flowers outside her window made her sneeze. She’d left her comfortable tennis shoes at home going with the sexy sandals instead, which did great things for her legs but made blisters on her toes. She didn’t wish he was here. She wished she was home.

I like that Glynndah. It's so true, regardless of how good a time you're having. Good choice for the next topic too. :)

Lies (1/10)

"How does this look?"

Charles rolled his eyes and drew in a heavy sigh before even turning around. It was one of those loaded questions that men always dreaded. He tried to recall what Helen's mood had been and shook his head.

He'd woken up to find his semihard cock nestled between Helen's asscheeks. "Mornin'", he mumbled as he kissed her neck and nibbled an earlobe. She stirred lightly and shushed him.

"Need sleep, put that away."

That sort of a day, he thought, and turned to regard his lover.

Helen was leaning against the doorframe, naked. Charles' eyes widened. "I thought...."

"I lied."

He found the snapshot, faded and creased, on the floor of the bedroom closet. There were three little girls, posed in front of a white picket fence, a small rundown house barely visible in the background. They were obviously sisters, stair steps, dressed in matching sun dresses and tennis shoes, smiling at the camera. He could pick out his wife, the oldest of the three, by the birthmark on her leg. She’d told him she was an only child. He held in his hand proof that she’d once had sisters, two of them. He wondered what else she’d lied about.

Lies

She learned at a very young age to keep secrets. Her first real lie, the one that changed her life, changed everything, was one of omission. It was a secret she did not tell, a secret she did not want to know, didn’t want to hold inside her childish heart, but one she kept for years even after it was safe, no longer necessary to keep. All the other secrets she’d kept throughout her life and the lies she‘d told, the lies she‘d lived, was still living, were built upon that first falsehood, the secret she still kept from him.
