It's always in the last place you look

I think this thread is worthwhile too.

300 words (by MS Word) ... another literal interpretation.

'I'm scared!'

'There's nothing to be scared of. What are you scared of?'

'There's a monster. It's big and hairy and it has big teeth and it eats people.'

'Little girls?'

'Big people!'

‘Would you like me to check?’

Alice nodded.

'Hmm. And where might this hungry monster be?'

'I don't know. Somewhere.'

'Under the bed?'

Alice opened her eyes wide, but said nothing. Graham picked up the little flashlight torch that she kept by her bedside and switched it on. The torch was pink and decorated with daisies.

‘Let’s look under the bed.’

He knelt down, making a big play of peering beneath, shining the weak beam to see everything that was there.

‘Nothing here, just little dust bunnies.’ He said. ‘Perhaps, in the Wendy House?’

He knocked on the door of the Wendy House. ‘Anybody in?’

There was no answer. Opening the door, he shone the torch inside.

‘Not here.’

‘Maybe it’s hiding in the chest. It can’t be very scary if it has to hide, can it?’

He crept to the chest, lifting the lid suddenly to surprise whatever might be lurking inside. There were only blankets.

'Perhaps it's in the wardrobe?'

'No! Please don't look in the wardrobe. I'm frightened.' Alice pulled the bedclothes up over her head as he gripped the handle.

'Are you in the wardrobe, frightening my little poppet?' He opened the door.

'Oh, SHIT!!'

'I told him not to look in the wardrobe, Mummy. It was waiting there for him and it ate him ALL up.'

A single mother, Monica found it difficult to understand how she could not keep a man. Somehow, Alice was just able to scare them off. They left so abruptly too. She sighed, tucking Alice in and kissing her.

'Goodnight, Alice.'

'Goodnight, Mummy.'

That was lovely, I'm still smiling. You've inspired me; plus I'll take a look at the others.

The only two sportsmen left on the moor were Sir William Killdonal of That Ilk and the Earl of Westmorton. The chill December air had driven the less enthusiastic shooters away and indoors. The beaters, McConaghy and Bill, were tired and wet, but it was not their way to question.

Suddenly a flurry of hooves came up from the moorland towards Castle Killdonal. Sir William looked back and frowned at his wayward niece. Her auburn hair flew from her shoulders and her eyes sparkled in the frost. Westmorton suppressed an inward smile of pleasure at the sight, though he deemed she was magnificent, and her anger only added to her appeal.

'Uncle, you want me to marry Whitcliffe. I will not.'

Westmorton flashed a glance between uncle and niece, and lowered his face, prepared for the storm, as he had before. From her youngest days Georgiana had carried her own way, and in a matter of marriage, no-one who knew her could acquiesce in Killdonal's choice. The intimacy between Georgiana and Westmorton was secret, private between themselves when their were too young to appreciate the responsibilities of their positions. Now, grown to their estate, neither of them had been prepared to speak publicly their commitment. But they both knew there could be no other.

Viscount Whitcliffe was her cousin and the richest man in the county, both incomparable advantages for the match. Georgiana had no alternative for the future, in the eyes of the respectable part of the world. Yet she refused. As children she and Westmorton had grown into each other: she was eager and ambitious, he retiring and poor, both knew theirs was not a match that could excite the world, but they had each other's love before they were old enough to know what love could be.

“Karen, why am I here?”

“I miss you,”

“what do you mean? after five years you decide you miss me .So you thought you’d just give me a call and, then what Karen we’d meet at the Ice cream shop for chocolate sodas ? Or maybe I’d invite you over for a sleep over then we’d do each others nails.”

“No. It didn’t take five years for me to realize, it didn’t even take me five months to realize I should have never left .”

“Then Why did you?”

“I was afraid”

“ why? of what? “

“Of us . I’d never felt like that before. I didn’t just want you. I needed you like I’d never needed anyone before I didn’t know how to handle it. So I ran”

“Why didn’t you call me?”

“ at first I couldn’t, then after a while I didn’t know what to say”

“So why now”

I need to know if there could ever be anything between us ,again”

I was stunned. There’d been times when I’d have given anything to hear those words. two years ago I would have said yes in a heartbeat but now ?

“ Jesus, Karen. Do you have any idea how you hurt me ? I loved you and you tore my heart out and never looked back now I’m just supposed to forget . A few years ago I would have said yes but not now Karen . I can’t take the risk I can’t trust you again.”

“I know I was just hoping we could start over”

As much as my mind rebeled my heart was already opening up to her again. I gave her the only answer I could

“ My name is Victoria, and you are”
“Karen”
“Nice to meet you Karen”

“Where is it?”

“Search me. No don’t! I don’t have it.”

“I can see where this is going. It’s lost, and I’ll be penalized.”

“Not penalized, but without a safe, you’re ain’t getting any!”

“Damn! Where'd the bugger go.”

“You already had it on, two minutes ago.”

“I did? Hey! Guess what? I found it!”
