Looks a bit chilly. How long before the thaw? I shivered when I saw the surf temperature here sitting at 54. I have become so spoiled.

I've been watching the Deadliest Catch on Discovery the past few days. Good Lord! I think hell is something similar to crab fishing in the Berrng Sea.

That's a nice model for the coffee table! The one on the stand looks to be canvas covered. A nontraditional material.

It was about +5°F for the kayak pic and -5°F for the beached boats pic. Not bad. Appropriately dressed, of course.

I've been watching the Deadliest Catch on Discovery the past few days. Good Lord! I think hell is something similar to crab fishing in the Berrng Sea.

It's hard dangerous work. The ocean is unforgiving, and almost evil in winter.

My brother is on one of those episodes. He fished the Bering for many, many years. Even after having the Coast Guard rescue him 2 times.

I kept wondering as I watched those programs what makes it worth it for these men to risk their lives like that. Money? Excitement? I wonder how many of these men are bachelors because their wives/girlfriends can't stand the worrying about them while they're at sea.

My brother started commercial fishing when he was 14, he's 36 now. It's in his blood. He likes the comaradity (sic?) and the excitement. They sometimes make good money, but there's no guarantee. Nothing like what he made 14 or so years ago. He's had the same girlfriend for 12 years now. She worries alot. We all do. He'll be starting a new job soon, as a roofer!

To hear your brother survived it twice is amazing (and has me picturing scenes from The Guardian .)

He's fished the Norwegian Sea, and further north into Barents Sea and the arctic ocean. He's been around the world on a boat, more than once. His dad was a fisherman, as well as his grandfather; in fact, he doesn't remember if any of his family members were anything but fisherman. I'd say it definitely gets into the blood.
