Me personally, for your first venture into toys, I wouldn't buy one if the premium brands. Alot if money to spend not knowing if you'll like it.

Assuming you're just talking solo play, hard to beat a good dildo and vibrator to start out. Size on the dildo is up to you and what you like. For vibrators, I've found that the classic g-spot vibrator works well as a general purpose vibrator. The slight curve at the tip can make it a little more convenient at certain angles. Id recommend a Rabbit type vibe for a first toy. It’s versatile, effective, and a really good way to figure out exactly what works for you and what doesn’t. After reading all the comments my advice is do some online research of toy outlets, get an idea of what might work for you. Then go to several shops in your area and see the items up close. Ask questions of the employees, most are knowledgable and quite willing to talk to you and offer ideas. Most places won't open the sealed packages but some have examples in the glass case that you can hold and get a feel for. Once you make a decision and purchase you can head out to your car or go home, or if they have viewing booths put in a few bills and watch a movie as you try it out. Most all places have a restroom for shoppers that you can ask to use, none have ever said no so far. Once it's bought you own it, if it's not quite right for you go back out and look for something else. It's a good way to add to your collection. Also gets you some looks from other shoppers.
