First time story by request

I am in the process of writing my first story (of any kind) which is nearing completion from my angle. As it is my first one, I am thinking it would be sensible to get some support / help. I'm hoping the assistance will be on any aspect of the story: tone, flow, character development etc. as well as I suppose any spelling, grammar issues that I would have hoped to have picked up myself. Not doing this before I assume that is what the volunteer editors do in some form? What I have written so far is probably utter drivel but we all have to start somewhere, right?

The story is in response to this thread, and I have discussed the content with this requestee.

My Plate Is Nearly Full

I am a good writer when the moon shines and an adult educator when the sun shines. I have other commitments but I can get to you in a few days, if you're interested. I do much more than edit, if you're interested. I particularly enjoy working with new writers.
