..find local groups?

I've heard lots on how joining your local swinger/kink/whatever groups can help you find out more about yourself and meeting others into the same thing.

How do you find them?

I live in a rather conservative area, so I already know it wouldn't be in my immediate vicinity, but to find out where one might be would help solve my curiosity.

What type of groups are you interested in, specifically? Sometimes there are sex-positive clubs/groups/parties/etc., but BDSM'ers usually have munches for socialization and swingers generally meet at parties. Similarly, spanking and other kink-specific enthusiasts often have their own get togethers. So, it'd help if you could narrow down what you're interested in by category, be that BDSM, swinging and/or something else.

To find such groups, google your city and the type of group. For instance, if I wanted to find munches in the Seattle area, I'd google 'Seattle BDSM munch.' For swinging organizations, I might google 'swinging Seattle' and similar.

There are also whole webpages and sites devoted to listing resources for any given kink by city, state and nation. They can be good general resources, although I've found much of the info is often outdated, so it's necessary to cross-reference via google, email, etc.
