I would go for a mutt. Mine is big-iish, but his mother was a small breed with a long lifespan, and he's still carrying on.

I've never met a poorly socialized Rottweiler which either means that Rottweiler owners are a self-selecting population that don't tend to be assholes or Rottweilers are relatively easy to socialize properly.

If you have a chance to get one I'd say take the opportunity. Lovely dogs, nice personalities, not neurotic like Shepherds and Dobies. Nothing better than coming home to such a big smile and the signature Rotti lean. I love having a 120lb dog look up at me with puppy eyes while leaning it's full weight into me like a big dog hug.

In the long run Baiting with 1080 foxbait poison, Sodium Fluoroacetate will be more effective.

If you take the dog option it must have heaps of exercise. If they don't get that they can be grouchy and become snappy, but treated properly they're as good as gold. I would also not get one if someone in your household is going to treat them like a baby. Proper dogs need respect not coddling.

As a puppy you should have no problem acclimating it to birds. They are Alpha dogs, highly intelligent, and you have to be the leader.
