I have no opinion on it one way or the other, having never done it before. But I do know it's used on certain types of horses to make them raise their tails and prance. (Don't lecture me on how cruel this is. I didn't say that *I* do it, just that I know it exists.) Supposedly, a healthy dose of Vaseline after the ginger is removed stops the burn nearly immediately. I don't know if it really works or not, not having tried, but it'd be worth a try if the burn got to be overpowering.
