I was in second grade, waiting my turn at the drinking fountain. The teacher came out and told us to all go back to the classroom. I can distinctly remember watching Kennedy's funeral on television, unfortunately the first of many.

Are we done ignoring each other here yet?

LOQUEREWORLD sure hopes so

I was too young for JFK. I do remember when Regan was shot, but because he didn't die it was never that big of a deal.

9/11 has certainly eclipsed JFK even for those who remember JFK.

Tell you what I have noticed, there is more than a few who do the "where were you" when it is the anniversary of Elvis death.

Hey "Jessie" post under your other ID will you?

Ideally I’m a Woodrow Wilson guy! I liked Carter too. I'm a Democrat, member of the party always have been loyal to it and will be to the day I die. I could forgive my wife for cheating, but if she turned republican I’d have to divorce her.

I have respect for JFK. But I'm a RFK guy.

Sr71 When you say Scourian are you comparing Scour Scour to Maceaveli. If so please don't. I like Mac I use his teachings everyday in the preservation of justice.

I'll always remember where I was when...

Of course everyone over here remembers exactly what they were doing, when they heard about 9/11 (late afternoon here), that will probably always be the big date for our generation.

I'm too young for JFK, but my parents' generation remember it very well, even over here in Scandinavia.

We have our own 'I'll always remember moment' here: when we heard about the Swedish prime minister Olof Palme having been shot - and no they never got the guy who did that assassination either.

Oh - and for Europeans maybe also:
Being told that John Lennon had been shot + the sentimental (girly ?) one: hearing of Princess Di's fatal car accident.
though I guess most people cannot give a date, or even a month, but maybe the year. So none of the above examples other than 9/11 probably qualify for JFK status.

Ah, I forgot about Princess Di. Yes I remember where I was then. (Getting dressed to go to the ceremony where my son was getting his doctorate. We had the TV on in the hotel. And we were late getting to the ceremony, as were about half the other people.)

I wasn't alive when Kennedy was shot, so it's not one of my milestones. However, when that time of year rolls around, I do remember it. And as others said, I saw something about it during an NFL game. I would guess the news channels had something as well, but I rarely watch those.

I remember where I was when I found out:

* John Lennon was shot
* Freddie Mercury died
* George Harrison died
* Princess Diana died
* Challenger exploded
* Columbia exploded
* about the Sept 11 attacks

I recall, but no real details about where I was or what I was doing, when Reagan was shot. I was 11, and I think I came home from school to find my mom watching it on the news. I was at my in-laws when the Queen Mum died (no idea why I recall that). Also remember being a little shocked at hearing of the assassination of Benazir Bhutto.

Unfortunately I saw that one coming by a mile--and she did nothing to stop it.

I can't say I was exactly surprised it happened. It was more just the startle factor of hearing it. And I guess I was in a place where I could have the news on a bit so it stuck in my head.

I remember Challenger/ Columbia Princess Di, Regan, Sept 11th of course.

As for musicians, personally I don;t hold any of them to the level of significance that it matters.

I will say that having never had any good feelings about Lennon, that one caught my notice because not to say he deserved it (no one does) but I never saw him as anything but a drug addled asshole.

Okay, not for nothing, but can someone explain to me why this happened here(not saying its not warrented) but we have scouries posting racist antisemitic images all over the place, not to mention screen stretching and images of hardcore sex supposedly not allwoed and nothing happens?

Indira Gandhi getting it shocked me more. Of course, I was covering that for a news agency.

What was a real shock, coming back to the states, though, was John John going down at sea in that plane.

I was only 10 when Lennon died, so it's not that I had a lot of knowledge or appreciate about him. I just knew he was "John Lennon from the Beatles." It was also the first thing I heard on the radio when I woke up; I think that's why it stuck in my head and hence why I remember where I was. Same thing happened with Freddie Mercury, although I was much older then and had a better idea of who he was.

Just b/c I mention these doesn't mean I had a high regard or anything, although I did in some cases. It's mostly just that I happen to remember where I was at the time, and the names were big enough for me to recall.

I remember that as well although I guess I'm of the generation where the Kennedys just weren't quite as big a deal, so I don't recall where I was or what I was doing.

I wasn't condemning you if you did hold them in regard, many do, look at all the people who remember when Elvis died.

I just don;t glorify celebrities as anything more than just what they do. Sure Tom Brady is a great quarterback and I want him to win because I'm a Pats fan, but I could give a rats ass who he's married to, what he's selling, what his views are, he throws a ball.

Guess I'm not the type to have "idols" I can;t compare the event of a world leader passing or a trajedy like 9/11 to someone who entertains for a living.

But again, I only speak for me.

I am inclined to agree with you. Nothing against Lennon or Mercury or Elvis or Hank Williams or anybody else, I just don't equate any of them with a world leader, such as JFK or Indira Ghandi. I can admire talented people, but I don't hold them in high regard foranything else.
