laptop computer, I've been kind of spoiled as my current employer has provided me with a nice hand me down Dell. I'm thinking that for word and internet access that I dont need much power and that should help keep the cost down...any one have any suggestions?

sorry, this might not be the best place to post this but i'm so freaking tired of having computer issues that I need my own laptop.

Macbook!

Macbook

1K+ dollars (U.S.). New incarnation of the iBook--which was rated in Consumer Reports as one of the most reliable laptops on the market. Can run Windows (but Mac's OS is fantastic--easy to learn if you're used to Windows), has a built-in web CAMERA--meaning you can video chat with whoever also has a camera using iChat...which is one of a ton of software that comes bundled with the laptop so you don't have to buy it or install it.

1.83 ghz at the lowest end. Intell processer. Superfast, lightweight, can take a lot of punishment (at least the iBooks could), beautiful screen, etc. etc. etc.

Mac laptops typically last upwards of 4-5 years and usually have an excellent retail value. And since 98% of all viruses are for Windows computers...they don't get viruses. So, no crashing, no restarting. I leave my laptop on 24/7.

That's my recommendation for a great laptop at a great value.

WHATEVER YOU DO, DO NOT RENT-TO-OWN. I'm doing it now and paying way more than I would if I had just bought a damn laptop.

I bought the cheapest model Dell makes. I think it was like $500 2 years ago. The wireless card was anothger $30 or so, as I recall.

I wouldn't rave about it, but it works okay. A battery charge only gives you like an hour of operating time though.

I have a Dell Latitude Cpi. Picked it up used. It's no big deal when it's compared to the enw toys that are out there but it does what I want it to do. Best of all I haven't broken it yet.

Once I get into my new place and my finances get settled down again, (hah nice dream that is,) I plan on looking at some of the newer ones out there. My ultimate plan is to get free of the desk top model, have a wireless router set up in the trailer along with a large external hard drive and a printer. (My computer desk will be a very small stand, large enough to hold the Hard Drive, the Router and the Printer.)

My only problem will be getting one that will survive my rough handling. (How much do those made for the Special Forces Cost? You know the ones designed to be dropped out of planes and floated in from a sub or boat off shore?)

Almost all PC laptops are made from the same exact parts in the same exact factories along the Pacific Rim, no matter what brand you buy. The biggest difference, then, is the warranty and customer service that comes with it. Dell Latitudes and IBM Thinkpads have some of the best reputations in this regard.

Mac 'books are wonderful, but you must be filled with the MacLuv. A Macintosh computer has this little built-in MacLuv sensor. If you have sufficient MacLuv, the computer will make angels dance on the head of a pin at your whim, but if it determines you lack the MacLuv the computer will turn against you.
