Feedback Request - New Lit Voting Element

Thanks for the comment.

A question though: By "swept away", do you mean averaged out, or deleted by the admins?

(I'm relatively new here and had to ask!)

Thanks.

Deleted by the admins. You can't vote on your own story and have it count - for long ;)

I've turned all voting off, with my new author's name. I always found the score irrelevant, and was sick and tired of someone-who-will-not-be-named-here's fascination with numbers of votes, lists etc...

Good for you. It's the only way of backing up statements that the voting doesn't mean anything to you.

On the topic of fascination with numbers and such--and because I didn't want to bring this up at the obvious point--is there really a way of determining what percentage of the total stories each year are hot without laboriously charting the stories on the site one by one? (Recognizing, as well, that this is a dynamic number, because voting continues on all stories across the years posted to the board.) Statistics have been thrown out, and I'm not aware of those statistics really being available without undergoing a major manual counting project.

I screwed up the star thing and got stuck on 1 star, but I promise I will correct it. I thought it was great and think you should do a part 2.

1 STAR ... 5 STARS ...what the heck - they're all votes.

I am worried though about the promise to correct it - this poor voter may go on MANU'S blacklist.

jrs.

So here's my promised report for a romance story. It's been up less than one day and already has 64 votes (wowzers!... but no pcs... weird). It's 3 1/2 Lit pages long and has a rating of 4.56. It's a tiny tad bit lower than what I expected but not much. This same story was up about three years ago in a not so edited version. I can't remember the exact score but I think it was close... maybe in the 4.7s?

Now that you've commented on it, it has a really big bull's eye printed on it. :D

Well, if the score drops, I'll know who did it. I'm not one to make enemies, so the people I might possibly have pissed off are few in number.

Oh, how will you know who did it? Just because I point out that trolls here target those who post about their high scores (which you might have taken as a valuable hint), you think I'm telling you I will do that? That's quite a leap of logic. Fact. Those who talk on the forum about their stories doing well frequently find they are then targeted. By all means kill the messenger, though.

I agree with that Fact.

Thanks for the update Crim... looks like the star system is taking a toll on romance, too... so much for my theory! ;)

Well, somethings up with the new system. My latest story has had about a quarter of its votes swept away in the last few days. And it had barely forty.

I lost over 40 in one sweep on my Valentine's Day contest entry.

Don't understand?

What I don't understand is the sweeps. If you can only vote once, which is the case for me. After I vote and if I go back to the story, I can't vote again. How do we lose so many votes that the scores drop.

Trolls don't hand out 5's. After some sweeps, I've been losing 20 to 40 or more votes at a whack and ending up with lower scores.

sr71plt - seems to be a nice person. I follow the threads sometimes and he only tries to give out helpful information.

CrimsonMaiden - What he told you is true. It's not only your enemies (if you have any) that vote down a story. It could be anyone that would gain because of your lower score. Unfortunately that type of person exists. That's why I'm surprised by the sweeps.

I'm only seeing sweeps of a few votes at a time and they don't, usually, have much effect upon my scores.

I'm curious, how many hits, and votes, are you getting on your stories, for you to have so many votes wiped out in one shot like that?

The more votes you get, the more seem to be swept. And lots of votes, I think, get swept during contests based on IP addresses (contest folks trying to vote others down.) Of course, that's all conjecture on my part... I have no idea really what the parameters are.

I don't think any of us know. The question has often arisen, but the consensus has always been "Who knows?" It seems to me that I get more fives swept than anything else. :mad:That may be from fans voting more than once. At least, I hope that's what it is.

I know that stories I've had up for over a year, whose scores have remained steady for months - ie they survived last year's sweeps intact - are losing votes and the scores are falling.

If the votes were legitimate last year, why aren't they now? If they weren't, why weren't they removed then?

I don't have a big fan base. And the stories that are being hit are the ones with the fewest views anyway.

The longer I'm here the more disenchanted with the voting system I'm becoming. But it's the only thing we've got to gauge a story's worth by.

I'm totally disenchanted with Lit's voting system, I have no faith in their ability to provide accurate scores.

I don't judge a story by it's score, I try to judge it by the content.

On my V day one, I have only lost about 20 votes, but judging by the massive drop in total, they had to have all been 5's! :( This contest story is virtually the lowest voted story I have - even taking into account my LW one.

Fan's can't vote more than once now - the system remembers you have voted when you're logged in. So even if you use a different pc, it still knows you voted already. Not sure if your vote counts when you aren't logged in? I don't think it does.

I was in no way saying it would be you. Geez. Touchy, aren't we? I had someone else altogether in mind. As far as I know, I've never pissed you off and vice versa.

Crim, I don't see how you can piss anybody off. At least not anybody who has seen your AV.

Personally, I never get pissed off at anybody on Lit. I might argue with some people, but I always keep it civil, and I would consider it a low blow to actually take anything out on anybody by bombing their stories.

yes,

it seems to work with IE 7 and Vista.

stars are easily visible, and change when you hover.
