Feedback Request - New Lit Voting Element

Whatever. But you might consider changing the blurb for the "1" star to "because I can."

Then we're back to two clicks to vote! The whole idea was to reduce the voting process to one...ONE click!

There is nothing in the world that makes me angrier then to have to click twice to accomplish something that can be done in one click.
Provided I can undo the click. Then aye.

A note with double click to post a vote would solve that easily

It's still two clicks but one screen and it's over quickly. You'll hardly feel a thing.

What is this I see about "two clicks" to vote using the current system? :confused:I have voted on hundreds of stories, and it has always been one click, followed by a message "Thank you for voting Boxlicker101" or something like that. If I wanted to leave a PC, I would usually cclick on the thermometer also, but I always thought that was just to tell the author what the vote had been.

I don't se a lot of difference between this and the old system. That one presented five small squares and I clicked on the one I thought was right. This one has glowing stars to click on. It ght work better but I don't see a lot of difference.

It's more attention grabbing when it lights up and it mirrors the voting system on other well known sights. It's more modern and fancy looking.

Agreed. It's really frustrating to accidently click and know you can't undo it or change your mind. My opinion is that people who are likely to vote, I mean really, conscientiously vote, might feel frustrated if this happens to them and likely to STOP voting. I know I would. Hey, it's just too easy for me to accidently click when I don't mean to click. I WANT a back/undo or stop button.

If I'd been a real reader, not a beta tester, and had this happen to me, I would have been royally pissed and sending a feedback letter demanding that my vote on the story be erased and I be given a chance to re-vote. Does Manu REALLY want to deal with such letters? Really want to have to re-set the voting of whatever number of disgruntled readers who clicked when they didn't mean to click? Some sort of "undo" button would, I think, take care of both the need to correct mistakes should they happen, and sate those who want one-click voting.

I believe what people meant by "two clicks" is one click to choose a radio dial and then another on the "submit vote" button.

I think this is a little more prominent too. I've talked to people who actually didn't notice the voting at the end of a story.

Yes, I see that now. I'm not very observant, because they are circles, not squares.

I believe this is an improvement. I looked at some of my smut, and the new system has been implemented on them.

New voting structure

I object to the new voting system, for two reasons.

First, it has the effect of dramatically lowering scores. I have seen that happen already with a chapter that went up today. This makes comparison between old and new impossible. The culprit is the captions in the stars. According to the captions, a reader could vote as low as 2 and have a complimentary intent on a story. In reality, a vote of 2 is a D. Readers are being induced to do that. It would be better to present five stars and label them A-B-C-D-F, like we had in school. this is waht I believe readers were doing before this. For some authors, who have attempted to maintain a standard, this is discouraging and confusing.

If new stories are to be reduced in worth, an adjustment to old stories is necessary, too. Or, perhaps, a story will have to defined as being from the "New" and "Old" regime. A new story, regardless of its quality will never be able to take its place among the great stories of the "Old" regime.

Second, it is sad that the system was injected on the stories without some prior notification to the authors, and some input from us. It would have been a simple task to send a notifying blanket e-mail to authors as a warning. The failure to do so shows that authors' efforts are not appreciated by those who run the site. You may own the website, but we authors own the work and we should have had some say in what happens to it.

There are options for us, of course. We can block voting or cease publishing on this site. This has come up so suddenly that further consideration will be necessary.

I'd like to hear the Trolls comments... is this new system going to be easier for them? I worry 'cos some of them can't read.

Good point. If they can make five shiny stars and then click because it looks nice then their vote won't reflect what they actually thought of the story.

Overall I like the new system. I particularly like the clarification to the rating system that appears as you roll over each star. :)

No complaints about the new "Star System", but I do have a comment, as follows:

I suspect that the new system is going to result in lower ratings for new stories, versus the existing ratings for all of the stories posted under the old system.

I just posted, what I thought was a pretty good story. So far, I have a 4.26 rating, and 90 votes.

I've never gotten so many votes before, which is good. On the other hand, I've never gotten so low a story rating, either.

Now, a 4.26 rating is still pretty good, as per the new system. But, I honestly think that my story would have earned a higher rating, and less votes, under the old system.

Again, this is a comment, not a complaint.

You can vote?
Yes, and now with the new system it's fun, fun, fun for everyone. So go to all the stories written by all your friends here on Lit and play with the stars. Just roll over them till all five are blazing and click. You don't even have to read the story...trust me.

Just play with the pretty stars. You want to do that...don't ya Trom?

Well, if Manu is really up for some geeky fun, he could track pre and post-star scores, then lay down some complicated math formula to give equivalent weight and scores to the star stories. Or just raise or lower the score needed for an H, but that wouldn't be nearly as fun.

No blinking with Safari either, not that I particularly want blinking. Also, there's a change of verb-tense in mid-orgasm. Is that normal?

Love the ticking bomb with the big "1" beside it! Clever.

Just went through my story list. Lo and behold, there are actually some new votes. Before the reads increased but no votes. Now the votes are going up also. Maybe the old 1 vote to 100 reads will increase as folks realize they can vote. Those blazing stars have caught their attention to that fact finally.

Of course, it could just be new toy syndrome

But the stars are just a dull gray until somebody prepares to vote. Maybe there should be a line above them suggesting the reader cast a vote.

The mouse dragging across them lights then up and that is attention grabbing.

Thank you to all who voted on my story. I'm now into double digits. Yay! :)

Just as long as there are no squirrel monkeys involved *shudders*
