Feedback Request - New Lit Voting Element

I love it, one click and it's done -but you might be right aout having the numbers ON the stars, 'cos then peole will (I'd think) pick out the number they want to vote before clicking anything.

I use Avant browser and it looks fan-dabby-dosy to me! :D

When you click upon a star
authors wonder who you are
so leave a PC if you please
and put their questioning minds at ease. :D

This is a winner O' Master of Cyberspace.

Lit enters the 21st Century--woohoo!

Mah stars lit up a purty gold too usin' IE 6. ;)

I have two suggestions, both about the same thing just one may be more coding than you want to do.

First, simply because I like it is to have the stars golden from the beginning and then putting the mouse over less than a 5 turns the higher stars grey. Easier to understand the system for those who don't know. Somewhat related is the idea of lighting up the stars to show the current average for the story, so a 4 average story would have four stars golden and one grey. To let people know easily what most people thought of the story.

Of course either of those two may be more coding than you want to do, in which case numbers in the stars would be good, faster idea of what each star means so 3113's example isn't repeated.

Oh and I wanted blinking darnit, I mean you said blinking so where is the blinking?

Notice the shiny blinking neon stars at the bottom of the page? If you click on one of those, you can ruin an author's life! Of course, if you click on five of those, you can make an author rich and famous. It's your decision. But, you people are the authors, so you know all of that.

I went there, looked, tested, and said "Oh, shit."

I was moving the cursor over the stars, watching them turn yellow, and then I clicked on one at random, expecting I'd be able to change my vote, or that the last star I click is the one that counts, but that was it! The vote was counted and the one lonely star frozen for all eternity. Apologise to torquedtales for me...

I think the only way that will happen is if we discover a way to have the readers keep their pants up until after they've read the story...:D

You mean they get off, and then.. just bail??

Put the sex at the end, put it at the very very end...;)

This aspect concerns me at tad.
Can there be a confirmation button or something?

I think that's an excellent suggestion. I have no problem with this new system; actually I like it better especially if I look at a piece I've previously voted on and can see my original vote.

But, when the system is in place and becomes the norm, there's no chance to change the vote — click a star and your vote's locked in; no chance for a change of mind as there is now. Perhaps an extra step really is needed; click on a star and then click on a "Lock in my vote" button? Just a thought.

Once you come up with a way to let people know what they're actually doing (I like the confirmation button, although then we're back to two clicks - I'd also go for more information up front), I think it will work fine.

With narrative like that, though (damned good read, one of the best, etc.), I'd actually expect scores to go down. People will suffer. There will be gnashing of teeth and pulling of hair. Maybe rending of garments. Dibs on the popcorn concession!

Actually, I liked the verbal measurements. Now I know that if someone rates me a 3, its actually a compliment rather than a raspberry. Logically, anyone whose averages are over 3 has a fan base. It may not be a raveningly enthusiastic fan base but, hey, we take what we can get! :D

I predict scores will generally go down...

works fine for me, IE-something-or-other... ;)

Yep, it works perfectly in Opera 9.25 on Win XP.

But I don't like it.

2 clicks is a good thing.

Because I'm a clutz, and I misclick a lot.
Before it was: Pick one score - Check that you marked the right one - Click ok.
Now it is: Pick one score - Oops, it's stuck on 4 when I meant 5. Can I undo? No? - Bollox. Sorry, author.

But it sure looks pretty.

Me likey the use of "smart web" functions in general. Ajax and all that jazz. The latest steroids for the forum - direct editing and quick reply - is awesome. But it needs to be matched with sensible and "Dummies Friendly" design. Because lots of users are dummies.

Dear Sir, congrats, you’re definitely starting to merit the title I’ve given you.

”MANU the MAGNIFICENT”

This change, along with the buttons to add an author or a story to the favorites list, are definite improvements to the site.

Personally, after trying your new system, I would favor putting the numbers inside the stars for clarification.

And I agree, putting a description of what the vote represents, will probably lower scores overall. And that’s probably a good thing for all of us when all is said and done.

I also predict a lot more readers will take the time to vote (which means that membership in the 1000+ VOTE CLUB should grow by leaps and bounds).

Speaking of which, have you by any chance considered taking over the TOP ALL-TIME VOTE RECEIVING STORY LIST? Poor Gabby is working night and day.

My only suggestion to you is that in future you’d be better off getting input from members before you start implementing changes. I’m sure you do some informal polling of friends etc., before you develop new ideas but its pretty accepted practice by most organizations today to get as much input as possible from ultimate users before you start to develop new plans.

You might start a thread that simply invited the members of LITEROTICA to tell you what they least like about how it presently operates. You might find that member’s priorities are significantly different than head offices.

And then once you’ve highlighted areas you’re planning on working on over the next year or so you might ask for specific suggestions.

If you want my two cents worth I believe the number one priority should be to improve the presentation of the stories themselves – quite simply make them easier to read.

Let me just end by saying you’re off to a good start for 2008 – Happy New Year.

Overall, it looks good. I like the size of the stars and the text. I quite like the clarifying text that shows up when the cursor is moved over a star. I'd agree though about needing a confirmation button of some kind. Too easy for somebody to click on one unintentionally. I don't personally see the need to have numbers inside the stars since they show up when the text appears.

Can there be a confirmation button or something?

Then we're back to two clicks to vote! The whole idea was to reduce the voting process to one...ONE click!

There is nothing in the world that makes me angrier then to have to click twice to accomplish something that can be done in one click.

*shrug* I'd rather know I voted what I wanted to vote and didn't have a slip-click of the mouse resulting in an error.
