Anger and fear consumed him. Tyler thrived on his anger, though harnessed, and he managed to use it to his advantage throughout his life. In contrast, fear was new to him.
He took a drag from his cigarette, the filter smashed between his long fingers.
Pacing back and forth, his fist clenched, he looked off into the distance, focusing on the thin line where the evening sky met the dusty dirt road.
For the first time in his life, he knew what it was like to unconditionally be devoted to another human being, Kelsey was his one true love.
How could he do this to her, it was his fault she was in this predicament. Before him she was pure, unjaded. Even after all they had been through together, after all the stick ups, the assaults, even after they had committed murder together, he felt she was still a kind soul. She was a good hearted person that anyone should be happy to know but most of all, he felt that God placed her on this earth to be by his side.
"This is my fault," he thought to himself, "I did this," a painful lump grew in his throat as he fought back tears, he wondered if he could carry on if he was never able to hold her close to him again. He doesn't think that's possible.
Out of the corner of his eye he saw the trail of dust rising into the air from the car speeding towards him. "This is it," he thought to himself as he tried to calm his breathing. Tyler had a reputation of always being calm and collective but this was different, he was a mess.
It seemed like an eternity but the car finally came to a stop. Tyler could see the silhouette of three people in the car. Two men in the front seats and one person in the middle, sitting in the rear seat.
The passenger side door opens, Carl Jr steps out, simultaneously the driver steps out, Tyler didn't recognize him. "Why are you here?" Where is your father?" Tyler angrily yells at Carl Jr. "I'm here to handle this business for my dad," Carl Jr replies. "Let her go, please." Tyler begs. "She has nothing to do with any of this, this is between me and your father," Tyler's anger and frustration grows. Carl Jr ignores Tyler's question and steps to the rear door and opens it. He reaches in and roughly grabs the third person out of the car, it was Tyler's beloved Kelsey, she was in rough shape but alive. Her hands were in front of her, bound with rope.
Tyler starts to run for Kelsey as Carl Jr shoves her to the ground, he stops abruptly in his tracks to the unmistakable sound of a gun being wracked. Tyler looks over and sees the driver pointing a gun at him, Tyler throws his hands up.
"You took my brother from me," Carl Jr barks at Tyler, "My mother and father are broken, our lives will never be the same because of you, you piece of shit," Carly Jr continues, growling through his teeth at Tyler. "Ok," Tyler tries to calm the situation. "The agreement between me and your father was that if I give him five million dollars, the debt for Mike's life would be paid, I have the money," Tyler declared. Carl Jr explodes, he reaches behind him and pulls out a pistol. He grabs Kelsey by her hair and points the gun at her head. "FUCK YOUR MONEY," Carl Jr yells through tears of anger, "I WANT MY BROTHER BACK." Tyler replies in a calm voice, "Please, I can"t bring Mike back, your father and I made a deal, I have the money, please let her go," Tyler begs.
Carl Jr releases Kelsey and stands up, straightening his shirt, he collects himself. A little more at ease, Carl Jr responds, "You're right, I will live up to my fathers deal with you, get me the money." Tyler steps back to his sleek black luxury car and opens the trunk. He returns with a duffle bag. "It's all right here," he says as he throws the bag as close to Carl Jr as he can, without hitting Carl Jr or Kelsey. Carl Jr retrieves the bag and eagerly opens it to check its contents. He steps away from the bag, seemingly pleased. "Get the fuck out of here." he motions to Kelsey. Without hesitation Kelsey stumbles to her feet, her hands still bound, she races toward Tyler.
Kelsey's eyes locked onto Tyler's as she ran. Tyler waited with open arms as she came closer and closer to him. "Thank you God," Tyler said to himself.
Just as Tyler widened his arms, anticipating his loves embrace, he was deafened by the sound of gunshot.
