Scott Willingham, 48, of Leadville, Colorado, is offering himself up as a mediator between the FBI and the last four people left at the refuge, 30 miles southeast of Burns.

Willingham had left the refuge a week and a half ago when the occupation leaders were arrested and protest spokesman Robert "LaVoy" Finicum was killed during a confrontation with state police and the FBI at a roadblock on U.S. 395 between Burns and John Day.

Willingham an unemployed musician, doesn't know if authorities will charge him in connection with the occupation, but said he's willing to risk it if he can help.

Ater about four hours waiting at The Narrows for the FBI to show up, Willingham said he was starting to feel demoralized because no agents had come to talk to him.

The militants were visited during their occupation last month by at least six Republican lawmakers, and another longtime ally called to express her support.

Utah State Rep. Ken Ivory (R-West Jordan) was not among the visitors, but he founded the ALC and successfully urged lawmakers in his state to pass the 2012 Transfer of Public Lands Act.

That law, which is promoted by the conservative American Legislative Exchange Council and Koch-backed American for Prosperity, demands the federal government hand over 30 million acres to Utah by the end of last year, and the state is now spending $2 million to convince the U.S. Congress to comply.


Ivory was cleared last year in a fraud investigation overseen by Utah’s attorney general, Sean Reyes — another Koch ally.

Ivory is now leaving ALC to work for Federalism in Action — another Koch-funded group that seeks the end of federal ownership of public lands.

The Utah Republican will be succeeded as ALC president by Montana state Sen. Jennifer Fielder (R-Thompson Falls)

The longer the FBI stands around in the cold, the worse it is going to be for the dipshits inside.

The militants have said they won’t leave until Fiore and the Rev. Franklin Graham, who they’ve asked to negotiate on their behalf, arrive and walk out with them.

They’ve also said they won’t leave unless they can take their guns and avoid arrest — but federal authorities have said they’re not willing to negotiate.

“The world is listening,” an agent can be heard saying over a megaphone. “It’s time to come out and tell your story.”
