Dark:

The killer awoke before dawn
He put his boots on
He took a face from the ancient gallery
And he walked on down the hall

He went into the room where his sister lived
And then he
Paid a visit to his brother
And then he

Walked on down the hall
And he came to a door
And he looked inside

"Father?"
"Yes, son?"
"I want to kill you"

"Mother, I want to..."

Jim Morrison, The End

Light:

Ring the bells that still can ring
Forget your perfect offering
There is a crack, a crack in everything
That’s how the light gets in.

Leonard Cohen, Anthem

Leonard Cohen’s You Want It Darker has a lot going for it IMO, right out of the gate :

"If you are the dealer, I'm out of the game
If you are the healer, it means im broken and lame
If thine is the glory, then mine must be the shame
You want it darker
We kill the flame"

Take my thong off and my ass go boom
Cut the lights off so you see what I can do (Come on)

I mean, there are more emotional lyrics out there, but few closer to the spirit of this forum...

A few recent favorites:

You ever wonder what we could have been?
You said you wouldn't and you fucking did
Lie to me, lie with me, get your fucking fix
Now all my drinks and all my feelings are all fucking mixed
Always missing people that I shouldn't be missing
Sometimes you gotta burn some bridges just to create some distance

I hate u, I love u by Gnash

Yeah, she looks like a little angel
But at night's a different angle
Demon eyes looking fatal
Got a mind, dirty, playful
Yeah, she got naughty thoughts
That she can't control
She don't wanna tell, she would rather show
Red little heart, black little soul
Teeth that are sharp, bite that is cold
She got a secret little dirty mind
Lewd imagination in the night
She don't like to waste any time
She's so creative when you cut the lights

Curiosity by Bryce Savage

I'll keep quiet
You won't even know I'm here
You won't suspect a thing
You won't see me in the mirror
But I crept into your heart
You can't make me disappear
'Til I make you
I made myself at home
In the cobwebs and the lies
I'm learning all your tricks
I can hurt you from inside
I made myself a promise
You would never see me cry
'Til I make you

The Devil Within by Digital Daggers

And one that's more amusing:

We fired our cannon 'til the barrel melted down
So we grabbed an alligator and we fought another round
We filled his head with cannonballs 'n' powdered his behind
And when we touched the powder off, the gator lost his mind

The Battle of New Orleans by Johnny Horton

What you don't have, you don't need it now
What you don't know, you can feel somehow

This is beyond poetry. This is a direct lesson in zen.

The first line is abundance in the moment, and since the future and past are nothing but perceptions, abundance in the moment is abundance, period.

The second line is how the 5 senses give us barely a fraction of the info at hand in any given moment as they only detect the physical energy around us, but our gut instinct is antenna to all of the rest of the energies around us.

99% of people go through their whole lives never learning these two tenets. Bono wants you to know these things.

........
I'll be all right though I may cry
The tears that flow they always dry
It's just that I would rather be with you now
And every time I see that star
I will say a prayer for you
Now and forever September blue
'Cos I'll always love you
September blue

September Blue, Chris Rea

Ohh there are too many to choose from... I'll go with sad songs right now, because it's Winter Solstice and sad songs on the longest night are delicious. Maybe I'll share happy songs another time!

For a desperately sad toxic relationship breakup song when I want to just feel sad, gotta go with MUNA's Stayaway.
If I turn off the light, then I might start thinking
If I start thinking, I’ll think of the time when
You said that you love me, you said I was perfect
You said you were sorry, you said you were selfish
If I don't stop it, before I know it
All the bad things never happened
You never lied or treated me bad and
If you did, then you wish you hadn't
Start believing you were right and
I was being too dramatic
So I gotta leave the light on for tonight
Just so I can stay away

For a song that is more ambiguous but the vibes are overwhelming, maybe Kishi Bashi's I Am the Antichrist to You?

And my heart it shook with fear
I'm a coward behind a shield and spear
Take this sword and throw it far
Let it shine under the morning star

Who are you? Who am I to you?
I am the antichrist to you
Fallen from the sky with grace
Into your arms race

And for an older one that just makes me want to die of old age in a rocking chair with the person I love, Death Cab for Cutie's I Will Follow You into the Dark!

Love of mine, someday you will die
But I'll be close behind, I'll follow you into the dark
No blinding light or tunnels to gates of white
Just our hands clasped so tight, waiting for the hint of a spark

If Heaven and Hell decide that they both are satisfied
Illuminate the "no"s on their vacancy signs
If there's no one beside you when your soul embarks
Then I'll follow you into the dark

"So understand
Don't waste your time always searching for those wasted years
Face up, make your stand
Realize you're living in the golden years"

Iron Maiden "Wasted Years"

"You and I (and I)
Can't decide (decide)
Which of us was taken for granted (granted)
Make amends (amends)
Some of us are destined to be outlived (outlived)"

Slipknot "The Devil in I"

"Turned on but it feels so wrong
Like when you relate to a Nickelback song
Inhibitions gone with the blinds drawn
But you don't mind doing it with the lights on
'Cause I bet the kind of love that you'd make to a man
Would look good as a mural on my uncle's van
He rents to own, lent me his cologne
Now I feel like a wolf with a saxophone"

Bloodhound Gang "Chew Toy"

Such variety quoted above.

Here's one you won't know, from a song called Pearl St Raga by the band Babel:

"Careful what you swallow/
It may leave you hollow."

The reference is about drugs, but could have so many other applications...

I almost listed "I Will Follow You into the Dark", as well. Great song.

Broken by Seether

The worst is over now and we can breathe again
I wanna hold you high, you steal my pain away
There's so much left to learn and no one left to fight
I wanna hold you high and steal your pain

The River Bruce Springsteen.

A song I didn't get when it came out as I was young, but years later, after some rough times, a divorce, and the constant grind of reality I got it, wow, did I get it.

But I remember us riding in my brother's car
Her body tan and wet, down at the reservoir
At night on them banks I'd lie awake
And pull her close just to feel each breath she'd take
Now those memories come back to haunt me
They haunt me like a curse
Is a dream a lie if it don't come true
Or is it something worse
That sends me down to the river
Though I know the river is dry
That sends me down to the river tonight
Down to the river
My baby and I
Oh, down to the river we ride-ide

here's a hole in my pocket where my dreams fell through
From a sidewalk in the city to the avenue
There's a leak in my dam 'bout the size of a pin
And I can't quite remember where the water's getting in

But when you're wearing on your sleeve
All the things you regret
You can only remember what you want to forget
You feel it tugging at your heart
Like the stars overhead
'Til you rest your bones on the killing bed

I think it's time we found a way back home
You lose so many things you love as you grow
I missed the days when I was just a kid
My fear became my shadow, I swear it did

Wherever is your heart I call home
Wherever is your heart I call home
Though your feet may take you far from me, I know
Wherever is your heart I call home

You made me feel like I was always falling
Always falling down without a place to land
Somewhere in the distance, I heard you calling
Oh it hurts so bad to let go of your hand

I little Bikini Kill for ya.

I am her, she is me
I am her, she is me
Siamese twins connected at the cunt
Heart brain heart brain heart brain lung yeaahhh!

Isn't there a Springsteen-themed event this month? I can't find it right now. Anyway, "Wrecking Ball" (how did Miley Cyrus wind up with the same title?).

Now, when all this steel and these stories
Drift away to rust
And all our youth and beauty
Has been given to the dust
When the game has been decided
And we’re burnin’ down the clock
And all our little victories and glories
Have turned into parking lots
When your best hopes and desires
Are scattered to the wind
And hard times come and hard times go.

This was released in 1988, yet it seems appropriate for what is going on right now.

And everybody knows that you're in trouble
Everybody knows what you've been through
From the bloody cross on top of Calvary
To the beach of Malibu
Everybody knows it's coming apart
Take one last look at this Sacred Heart
Before it blows
And everybody knows.

It's all a game, avoiding failure..
When true colours will bleed..
All in the name of misbehaviour..
And the things we don't need..
I lust for after, no disaster can touch..
Touch us anymore..
And more than ever, I hope to never fall..
Where enough is not the same it was before..

Poets of the Fall - Carnival of Rust.

And everyone is so kind
With the lies that they tell themselves
'Cause everyone is so blind
To the truth that they're ugly inside
When the mirror's laughing
Time takes over
You should know
We're rotting away

There's no
Nothing left for me
When all beauty's destroyed
There's no
Nothing left to see
Once all beauty's destroyed

And everyone is so torn
Between truth and a false veneer
Well no one wants to be alone
In the wake of their faults and fears
If you don't stop scratching
Wounds reopen
As we slowly start to decay

All Beauty Destroyed by Aesthetic Perfection

No one knows what it's like to be the bad man
To be the sad man, behind blue eyes
No one knows what it's like to be hated
To be fated to telling only lies

But my dreams, they aren't as empty
As my conscience seems to be
I have hours only lonely
My love is vengeance that's never free
