Okay so it's that time of year again when you can't go anywhere or listen to the Radio without at least hearing a snipet of Christmas music. Just out of curiosity I wanted to know what your favorite holiday songs are. I'll post my own shortly

I think my favorite traditional christmas song is The Little Drummer Boy. I don't know why, but the thought of this little boy, drumming by himself because he has no gift gets to me every time.

Non-traditional? Why, Porky Pig singing Blue Christmas, of course. :D

the best Christmas song ever.......

All I Want For Christmas Is You - Mariah Carey

I don't want a lot for Christmas
There is just one thing I need
I don't care about the presents
Underneath the Christmas tree
I just want you for my own
More than you could ever know
Make my wish come true...
All I want for Christmas is
You... yea yea

I don't want a lot for Christmas
There is just one thing I need
(and I) Don't care about presents
Underneath the Christmas tree
I don't need to hang my stocking
There upon the fireplace
Santa Claus won't make me happy
With a toy on Christmas day
I just want you for my own
More than you could ever know
Make my wish come true
All I want for Christmas is you...
You baby

Oh I won't ask for much this Christmas
I won't even wish for snow
(and I) I'm just gonna keep on waiting
Underneath the mistletoe
I won't make a list and send it
To the North Pole for Saint Nick
I won't even stay awake to
Hear those magic reindeer click
'Cause I just want you here tonight
Holding on to me so tight
What more can I do
Baby all I want for Christmas is you
You baby

All the lights are shining
So brightly everywhere (so brightly yea)
And the sound of children's
Laughter fills the air
And everyone is singing (oh yea)
I hear those sleigh bells ringing
Santa won't you bring me the one I really need -
won't you please bring my baby to me...

Oh I don't want a lot for Christmas
This is all I'm asking for
I just want to see baby
Standing right outside my door
Oh I just want you for my own
More than you could ever know
Make my wish come true
Baby all I want for Christmas is
You (You) baby

All I want for Christmas is you baby... (repeat)

I have a soft spot for "God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen," just because it was the first one I could pick out on the piano.

But I guess the one I like best is "The Holly and the Ivy." Especially instrumental versions.

Okay Jackson5 "I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus"
The entire Ray Charles album "The spirit of Christmas."
Any and all versions of "Christmas Blues" and "Baby it's cold outside."

Also any child singing "Oh come let us adore him"
"Go tell it on the mountain" (but only the way they sing it down south at "black churches")

The Muppets singing the 12 Days of Christmas.

[Miss Piggy Voice]"Five gold riiiiinnnngs! Ba dum dum dum!" [/Miss Piggy Voice]

Definitly a Christmas classic. :D

"You're a mean one, Mr. Grinch" puts a smile in my heart.

"Christmas at Ground Zero" by Weird Al.

And you can't go wrong with "Santa Clause is Coming to Town."

Is that the one on the John Denver and the Muppets Christmas Album? My mother plays that every year!

This one, in my opinion, is the best, without a doubt:

Fairytale Of New York
The Pogues and Kirsty McColl (1987)

It was Christmas Eve babe
In the drunk tank
An old man said to me, won't see another one
And then he sang a song
The Rare Old Mountain Dew
And I turned my face away
And dreamed about you

Got on a lucky one
Came in eighteen to one
I've got a feeling
This year's for me and you
So happy Christmas
I love you baby
I can see a better time
When all our dreams come true

They've got cars
Big as bars
They've got rivers of gold
But the wind goes right through you
It's no place for the old

When you first took my hand
On a cold Christmas Eve
You promised me
Broadway was waiting for me

You were handsome
You were pretty
Queen of New York City
When the band finished playing
They howled out for more
Sinatra was swinging
All the drunks they were singing
We kissed on the corner
Then danced through the night

The boys of the NYPD choir
Were singing 'Galway Bay'
And the bells were ringing
Out for Christmas day

You're a bum
You're a punk
You're an old slut on junk
Living there almost dead on a drip
In that bed

You scum bag
You maggot
You cheap lousy faggot
Happy Christmas your arse
I pray God
It's our last

I could have been someone
So could anyone
You took my dreams
From me when I first found you
I kept them with me babe
I put them with my own
Can't make it all alone
I've built my dreams around you

Fucking brilliant song! Never fails to put shivers down my spine.

That's the one!

(I actually like John Denver, don't tell anyone.)

just one? oh i love Christmas songs so much!

carol wise I do love Oh little town of Bethlehem.

hmmm SIMA's choice of All I want for Christmas is a good one, ooh and "rocking around the chrismas tree!"

and well who can forget

"Well I wish it could be christmas every day!"

Ok i could (and probably will) go on forever with these*L*

"Rudolph the Red-nosed Reindeer" by the Temptations, "One Little Christmas Tree" by Stevie Wonder and "Frosty the Snowman" by the Ronettes.

"Adeste Fidelis" in Latin, sung by all at midnight Mass, always makes me cry with a bittersweet joy. My father loved that hymn and used to sing it to us. I only sing it once a year but the words come back to me each time.

With my second favourite being:

Do they know it's Christmas?
Band Aid

It's Christmastime,
there's no need to be afraid
At Christmastime,
we let in light and we banish shade
And in our world of plenty
we can spread a smile of joy
Throw your arms around the world
at Christmastime

But say a prayer,
pray for the other ones
At Christmastime it's hard,
but when you're having fun
There's a world outside your window,
and it's a world of dread and fear
Where the only water flowing
is the bitter sting of tears
And the Christmas bells that ring there
are the clanging chimes of doom
Well tonight thank God it's them
instead of you

And there won't be snow in Africa this Christmastime
The greatest gift they'll get this year is life(Oooh)
Where nothing ever grows
No rain or rivers flow
Do they know it's Christmastime at all?

Here's to you raise a glass for everyone
Here's to them underneath that burning sun
Do they know it's Christmastime at all?

Feed the world
Feed the world
Feed the world
Let them know it's Christmastime again

Feed the world
Let them know it's Christmastime again

The re-make, Band Aid 20, is out in the shops to buy now (in the UK). So, if you haven't bought it yet, go but it! All proceeds go to the refugees in Sudan.

It's Christmas time in Iowa
And everywhere are sounds of love and joy
You are my best friend, and I just want to say
With people like you in my life
The season feels so warm and bright

CHORUS:

Merry Christmas, Sugar Momma
Happy New Year, too
May your dreams come true
And may a Christmas star
Shine brightly where you are
I wish a Very Merry Christmas to you

And a third, if I may? :D

It's gotta be:

Last Christmas
Wham

Last Christmas, I gave you my heart
But the very next day you gave it away
This year, to save me from tears
I'll give it to someone special

Last Christmas, I gave you my heart
But the very next day you gave it away
This year, to save me from tears
I'll give it to someone special

Once bitten and twice shy
I keep my distance, but you still catch my eye
Tell me baby, do you recognize me?
Well it's been a year, it doesn't surprise me

I wrapped it up and sent it
With a note saying "I love you", I meant it
Now I know what a fool I've been
But if you kissed me now, I know you'd fool me again

Last Christmas, I gave you my heart
But the very next day you gave it away
This year, to save me from tears
I'll give it to someone special

Last Christmas, I gave you my heart
But the very next day you gave it away
This year, to save me from tears
I'll give it to someone special

Crowded room, friends with tired eyes
I'm hiding from you, and your soul of ice
My god I thought you were someone to rely on
Me?, I guess I was a shoulder to cry on

A face on a lover with a fire in his heart
A man under cover but you tore me apart
Now I've found a real love, you'll never fool me again

Last Christmas, I gave you my heart
But the very next day you gave it away
This year, to save me from tears
I'll give it to someone special

Last Christmas, I gave you my heart
But the very next day you gave it away
This year, to save me from tears
I'll give it to someone special

A face on a lover with a fire in his heart
A man under cover but you tore him apart
Maybe next year I'll give it to someone
I'll give it to someone special, special
Someone, someone,
I'll give it to someone
I'll give it to someone special
Who'd give me something in return

I'll give it to someone
Hold my heart and watch it burn

I'll give it to someone
I'll give it to someone special
I thought you here to stay
How can love be for a day

I thought you were someone special
I gave you my heart

I'll give it to someone
I'll give it to someone

Last Christmas I gave you my heart
You gave it away

I'll give it to someone
I'll give it to someone
La la la la .....
Da la da la ....

Darlene Love's "Baby Please Come Home"

"War is Over" either the Lennon/ono one or Melissa Etheridges version.

The entire Peggy Lee's Christmas Carousel Album.

and the kid's favorite...Domink the Donkey.

edited to add: The Waitresses "Christmas Wrapping"

Oh! Lou, Fairytale of New York is one of my very favorites! Also, Destinie mentioned Baby It's Cold Outside, which I love so much I added it to my sig line the other day. And I agree with Evil Alpaca that You're A Mean One Mr Grinch is a classic.

I also adore the Angela Landsbury version of Need a Little Christmas and John Lennon's Happy Christmas.

And one more, though not technically a Christmas song. John Lennon's Give Peace a Chance has been ringing through our house for a couple of weeks as we celebrate Thanksgiving and get ready for the rest of the season.

"Christmas at Ground Zero" by Weird Al.

And you can't go wrong with "Santa Clause is Coming to Town."

"The night Saint Nick Went Insane" by Weird Al is also great.

This one never fails to make me cry:

So this is Christmas
And what have you done
Another year over
And a new one just begun
And so this is Christmas
I hope you have fun
The near and the dear ones
The old and the young

A very merry Christmas
And a happy New Year
Let's hope it's a good one
Without any fear

And so this is Christmas
For weak and for strong
For rich and the poor ones
The road is so long
And so happy Christmas
For black and for white
For yellow and red ones
Let's stop all the fight

And so this is Christmas
And what have we done
Another year over
And a new one just begun
And so happy Christmas
I hope you have fun
The near and the dear one
The old and the young
