Sure there are crappy christmas films that come out every year polluting television with their crappy christmas movie formulas.

Luckily for us there are good Christmas films out there. So why not share with others the films you believe are not to be missed and why?

Dr. Seuss's how the grinch stole Christmas
I know some of you may be purists when it comes to this, but the live action film is not to be missed. It's one of those movies with a thousand jokes and details you only pick up from watching it 20 or more times. It also doesn't get old like "A Christmas Story" There's only so much of adults telling a kid he'll shoot his eye out before you want to hang yourself. Not so much much with this film. Jim carrey did a great job playing jim carrey playing the grinch. It just works and there's charm practically leaking from it. Did I mention Anthony Hopkins is narrating? Anthony fucking Hopkins.

Scrooged
What's more fun than the redemption of a misguided tight fisted jerk? I'll tell you what. That jerk being taught a lesson. What's even better than that? The jerk is played by Bill Murray in his prime and has the living shit scared out of him. Comedy, Redemption, Romance...it's all there and done with style. What more could you want?

The Nightmare Before Christmas
Forget that this was done by Tim Burton in his prime. The animation team and writers did a fantastic job. They did this whole film from a single idea. Tim said hey I want to make a stop motion christmas film. His team says okay. They ask for a script but he has nothing but a poem. Danny Elfman, Henry Selick, and Caroline Thompson pull the entire thing together from a poem and a few character design sketches. The end result is stunning animation and a wonderful musical. Watch it. Right now. You know you want to.

Muppets' Christmas Carol. And you forgot about Bobcat Goldthwait as a disgruntled former employee completely smashed on bourbon and toting a double barrel in one hand and a cast on the other.

Muppet's Christmas Carol!

There is not much that I think the Muppet's cannot touch that can't turn to gold, and this a definite favourite Christmas movie for me.

The songs, the humour, the acting, the muppets, it's all good

The Hogfather

A great adaptation of Terry Practhett's book

That goes without saying. Nothing is funnier than him being drunken and disgruntled with a shotgun.

As for A muppet christmas carol...I've yet to see it. I need to.

Yes, you do. We've got the DVD, but it's got a "Full screen extended edition" and a "Widescreen theatrical"....I'm sitting here like "No extended scenes on the widescreen? Scrooges..."

My niece seems to really like the original Frosty The Snowman (but not the sequel done by Charles Schultz, oddly)

I have to agree with Hikari the live action How the Grinch Stole Christmas is waaay better than the original.

I also love The Muppets Christmas Carol

Home Alone

Santa Baby

Just watched 'Love Actually' ;)

Gotta love the Muppets and all those aforementioned films...

Going to add 'The Snowman' (Classic!) and 'Santa Claus the Movie' with Dudley Moore as Patch the elf...watch it every year and feel about 8 years old in the process ;)

There is also a brilliant Finnish Christmas movie called 'Joulutarina' (literal translation - Christmas Tale/Story) about how Santa became Santa. A very nice 'traditional' kinda film about Finland's famous son...subtitled or available in a horrendous dubbed version in English...not that I expect many will be rushing to watch it :D

anyone who hasn't seen it needs to watch Hogfather. It's a brilliant spin on the very idea of christmas

Call me crazy, but I also have a soft spot for "The Santa Clause" starring Tim Allen.

Also, shame on us for not listing "Christmas Story" or "Christmas Vacation". Personally I just love Chevy Chase's meltdown rant near the end of that one.

All good ones posted so far especially Christmas Vacation, it just doesn't get better than Chevy Chase but Elf is pretty damn funny too.

Nightmare Before Christmas

Home Alone 1 & 2

And as someone has already mentioned, Die Hard and Muppets Christmas Carol

I don't mind Love Actually either, but its always over advertised around christmas.

The year without a santa claus
Why? Not exactly sure. Probably because it describes my youth in snowless winters and my secret wish every year that it would snow for christmas. Oh hell with that explanation! It's old school stop motion and snow miser is a cheeky bastard. Plus it's a story where santa is less than superhuman and decides he wants to be lazy. He wakes up one morning and realizes he's getting too obscenely old for this.( What is he like 300 now?)

White Christmas!!
How could I forget this one...?! Watched it every year without fail in my childhood, gotta love a bit o' Bing and Danny :D

  • Miracle on 34th Street.
  • Its a Wonderful Life
  • Nightmare Before Christmas
  • Christmas Vacation
  • A Christmas Carol

I love all of these. Chevy Chase in Christmas Vacation is a howl, and Tim Burton's Nightmare is superb!

Love them all! They feature as part of my Christmas every year!

Christmas Vacation
Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer
8 Crazy Nights

Christmas Vacation is just a classic. I always used to watch Rudolph every year and loved it, though I will say Santa kind of a prick in the beginning. 8 Crazy Nights is holiday movie rather than just Christmas, and God help, I actually do like this movie.

Its A Wonderful Life - the ultimate feel good Christmas movie, a cult classic.

Die Hard - Let it Snow, Let it Snow, Let it Snow

Muppet Christmas Carol - nuff said ;)
