Fast Fingers...

Marcus lay back on his bed and looked at Desiree, what was she talking about? He had no feelings for the waitress....he must be delirious.
"Desiree, I don't have any feelings for the waitress, I never did. I was also lapsing in my job tonight and put my own life in danger. My life was on other than my job, it was thinking about the only person I have feelings for, the only person that is in this room besides me."

Oh god, now you have done it Marcus. Just lay back and watch her run from the room and prepare to welcome your new partner when you get back to work

Desiree just sat there frozen. She couldnt say anything. She knew she couldnt have heard him right. SHE was the only other person in the room.

Swallowing hard, she tried to speak but nothing came out. Finally she spoke, her voice almost a squeek.
"Marcus, I think the drugs have affected you more than you think. Though I would love to believe what you just told me, I dont think you are going to remember it when you wake up."

Standing, she looked down at him, her breath catching in her throat. "I think I should go now. Because if I stay here, we both might regret it in the morning."

Desiree tried to will her legs to move but they refused. She just stood there looking at him, her mind whirling with fatigue and impossible thoughts.

Marcus sat up in the bed, looked at Desiree who was looking at him, unable to say or do anything and knew that he had to say something quick or she would leave quickly.

"It is not the drugs talking. I am not delirious or any other excuse that you can come up with. I am thinking clearly here and I am saying that I have feelings, strong feelings for you. I have for a while now and the only way that I could show them was by doing things to make you angry at me so that you wouldn't know. I know that I shouldn't have these feelings about you because you are my partner but it has happened and now that I have told you I am fully expecting to have another partner when I get back to work two days from now."

Desiree sat back down again and tried to absorb everything that Marcus had just told her. It was an impossible task.

Groaning she shook her head as she said,"God, Marcus, we are in such a mess. There is no way that the Captain is going to let us keep being partners when he finds out how we feel about each other."

"And then when he realizes that our feelings are what caused us to screw up tonight...." She threw her head back onto the headrest of the chair and looked at the ceiling.

"Both of us are going to end up with different partners come Monday morning-If we even keep our jobs."

Marcus felt as if his head was spinning and it was not because of the concussion. Desiree had just told him that she had the same feelings for him that he had for her but then he knew that what they felt for each other would get them in deep trouble. He had to think of a way out of this.

"There are only two ways out of this. We continue the way that we are now, partners and that is it. Nothing more and nothing less, but the only problem with that is that we now know how we feel about each other and we can't change it. Or, we acknowledge our feelings for each other but when we are at work we don't show it, we go on as normal, no quick kiss in a storage room or anything, but the only problem with that is that I am not that good an actor. I know that there is another way that we can stay partners, even with the feelings that we have for each other because we work well together, you know what I am thinking- you hate me for it but you know and I try to know what you are thinking. I don't want to lose you as a partner, you mean too much to me as a partner and you mean more to me now."

Desiree closed her eyes and tried to think. It was all happening too quickly. There was too much to make sense of anything but she had to admit that he had a valid point.

Sitting up at his suggestion she gave him a puzzled look.
"Marcus, are you talking about quitting the force and going it on our own? Chasing down The Devil as private eyes? Thats crazy. I have to admit that there is probably no other way to stay partners but that is a big step."

Scooting closer to him, She said,"Marcus, you have put so much time and effort into your career and I dont want to be the cause of you losing everything. There is no way I want to take anything away from you."

She laughed and shook her head as a thought came to her mind.
"Listen to us," She chuckled,"Talking about long term plans and we havent even...well, we havent even kissed yet."

Marcus looked at Desiree and saw how beautiful she looked, "I am not talking about leaving the police force. I am talking about trying to hide the feelings that we have for each other, something that I can not do any more."

Before Desiree knew what he was doing her moved closer to her, leaned forward and kissed her deeply on the lips, tasting her. As he kissed her one thought forced itself into his head Please let time stop now....oh please let it stop

Desiree felt herself melt into Marcus and her arms went about his neck as if they had a mind of thier own. She never wanted this moment to stop.

When he finally lifted his lips from hers, she could hardly breath. "Oh, god, Marcus," She breathed,"What are we going to do? I dont want to give you up but I dont know that I can pretend not to have these feelings for you."

Running her hand along his strong jawline in a caress she added,"But I am willing to do whatever I have to in order to keep you near me."

"Right now though, we have to come up with a plan just to keep our jobs. And since you seem to have all the fool proof plans I am waiting to hear some good ones."

For once Marcus couldn't come up with a plan, his mind was definitely thinking about one thing and then it hit him, like a lightning bolt out of a blue sky.

"I have it. We tell him that we were following a suspect but he got the drop on me and hit me over the head witha a blackjack while you were on the other side of the door. You came into the basement and saw me on the floor and knocked him down to stop him from killing me. It will work, and what is he going to do, fire us both unless you have already told him something else. If you have then we are sunk and I need you to be with me."

Desiree laughed and punched him playfully in the arm.
"You goose," She said,"Thats exactly what happened. Which reminds me-you owe me one."

She sat back in the chair and thought a minute.
"Humm..telling the truth. It's wacky but it just might work." Seeing his look of exasperation at her teasing, she smiled and waved a hand. "Ok, ok...I will be serious."

"The only thing I told him was that it was my fault and I let my emotions get the best of me. I never told him WHAT emotions. I havent spoken of them to anyone except you-right now."

"We will have to do some fancy talking tomorrow when we see the Captian but I am used to that so we might just be able to pull it off. He might even allow us more leaway once he realizes you arent going to chase off another partner."

A worried look creased her face and she sat up once more.
"There is one fly in the ointment though. Marcus, if we are going to pull this off you are going to have to be prepared for everything. What about Barton. You know he is not going to stop hitting on me. He didnt even stop after you threatened to pin him to the wall that one time. Do you think you can keep from showing anything in that situation?"

Shaking her head, she added,"We have to look at every posibility before it happens. That way nothing like tonight will happen again."

Blushing she confessed,"I screwed up tonight because I thought you were going ape over that waitress. I dont even know her name and I was ready to kill her. We cant let things like that show if this is going to work."

"Barton is a weeny but I can't do anything if he hits on your again, much as I would like to put him through a wall because if I do then he will know what is going on and tell the captain. But we do have a problem, everytime we get into a dangerous situation I am going to start thinking about you and that will hinder us more than I would like to admit. We both said that we have to stay together as partners but what are we going to do about the feelings we have about each other, lock them away while we are doing our job- right now I think that that it going to be the most impossible job that we can have, worst than trying to catch The Devil."

He then began to laugh.

Desiree shook her head.
"I think the drugs are starting to get to you, handsome," She said with a smile.

"What we do when we are on the job is the simplest thing of all. We trust each other because if we dont than we have no relationship on or off the job."

Coming over to sit on the bed beside him, she let one hand trace along his forehead and down his cheekbone and then outline his lips. She loved the feel of his skin under her hand.

"And if we are sure of each other than there should be no jealousy to trip us up like it did to me tonight. It is going to be difficult but not impossible-once we get around Captian Harrison that is."

Marcus looked at Desiree before he ran his fingers down her cheek then through her hair, he realized that he loved her, everything about her but was too scared to admit it to himself.

"I would say leave Captain Harrison to me but I know that I would end up with both of us getting fired so I think that the best thing to do would be to talk to him together."

He then let out a low sigh when he felt her fingers run along his cheek.

"I will try and keep calm. I know that I can trust you but my temper is well know but if it ever comes to me almost losing it then I will just thing about you."

Desiree suddenly felt all the weight of the evening slam down onto her shoulders and she suddenly felt more tired than she ever had before. Leaning forward, she kissed Marcus and stood up.

"Listen, Handsome," She said watching as his eyes started drooping from the effects of the medicine,"I really do have some paperwork to do. And I have to outline what we are going to tell the Captain tomorrow so...if you dont mind..."

One last kiss and she was out the door and headed to the parking lot..this time Marcus' keys in hand and a spring in her step.

As Marcus drifted off to sleep he had a smile on his face.

"Good night Desiree," he said before he fell asleep, his dreams being filled with thoughts of her.

Desiree went down the elevator and out to the parking lot. She thought about where she was going as she slid into the driver's seat and decided home was the best bet.

Looking down at herself she was sure that she would get arrested if she went trapsing about looking as she did now. Laughing at the thought, she pulled out from the other cars and headed towards her apartment.

It crossed her mind that Captain Harrison had told her to get herself checked out but she shrugged it off. She felt wonderful and all she wanted was a shower, clean clothes and bed.

OOC: well blast, I have put myself to sleep and now can't do a thing- rats

OOC: LOL...well Desiree is asleep in her bed..unless anyone wants a detail of her shower *grins* so we either leave it here until the others post or take it from the morning when they wake up.

OOC: *Pouts* and it would have been such a good shower scene too (thoughts of the Psycho movie comes to mind).

Desiree woke to the blaring of her alarm clock. One hand came out from under the covers and fumbled around on her bedside table until she knocked the clock off of the stand.

Groaning and still half asleep, she was about to pick it up from the floor when the telephone rang. "Damn," She thought,"I thought modern technology was supposed to make life easier."

Reaching for the phone on the other stand she put it to her ear and mumbled,"Yes?," flopping her head back onto the pillow.

The voice on the other end woke her up completely and she sat bolt upright in bed.
"Ashton!," The Captain's voice boomed in her ear,"How come I am sitting in my office on a Saturday morning waiting for two of my officers to show up? Thompson is at the hospital right now waiting for you to pick him up-he has been dismissed from the hospital and you have his car. He has been trying to get you on your phone for an hour now."

"Marcus!," She said out loud before she could catch herself.

"Yeah, you know, your partner? Now get your ass out of bed, go get him and meet me at the station in an hour-got it?"

"Yes, Sir," Desiree said as she slid out of bed headed for the bathroom, hanging the phone up on the way there.

"Damn," She said as she got a look at herself in the bathroom mirror. A bruise had appeared on her cheek where Earl had hit her and she felt like someone had beat her over and over again with a baseball bat.

She wondered how many times she had hit the snooze button on her clock before it actually did its job of waking her up. She must have been sleeping like the dead. And now she would have to rush through her morning toiletries in order to get to the station in time.

Twenty minutes later, she was at the hospital and riding up the elevator. The bruise had been covered as well as it could be with artful make up application and other than that she looked crisp, clean and professional-like a cop.

As she approached the door to his room she paused. What if everything that happened last night WAS due to his medication? Or what if it wasnt and he regreted everything he had said to her last night.

"Get a grip girl," Desiree told herself,"You have faced down tough guys before with less nerveousness."

Taking a deep breath, she pushed the door open.

Marcus watched the door open and saw Desiree walk in, "About god damn time. I called you about an hour ago....what the hell were you doing and where is my car. If it has got a scratch on it in any place I will take it out of you."

Desiree looked taken aback, maybe it was the drugs talking last night. He asked for his keys which she handed over to him and he walked past her, heading to the elevator. The two of them headed down to the carpark in silence and Marcus walked over to his car which he opened then unlocked the passenger side door.
"Will you hurry up and get in," he said.
As soon as Desiree was in the car he leaned over and kissed her on the lips, "I got you for a minute...didn't I beautiful."

Desiree punched him playfully on the shoulder and glared at him.
"Watch it, Partner," She growled at him,"Or you might regret it." But she was smiling as she watched him start the car.

"How are you feeling?," She said, concern creeping into her voice. When he gave her an exasperated look she held up her hands and smiled.

"Ok, ok, you cant blame a girl for worrying, can you? I hope you are ready for this meeting though. It isnt going to be an easy one."

It seemed like no time before they were at the station and she swallowed hard as they got out of the car.
"Well, here goes nothing," She thought to herself as they walked into the building, she a little behind him. The ride up in the elevator was silent as they avoided any contact with each other.

"God, I dont know if I can do this," She said to herself as the elevator doors slid open and they were deposited on the fifth floor. "Come on, girl," She thought,"Dont blow this now."

Heading to the door marked Captain, she hesitated and then flashed a look at him as he opened the door, stood back and gestured her in. "After you," He said with a mischievious smile. "Thanks alot," She threw back at him as she entered.

All humor fled at the sight of Captain Harrison sitting behind his desk and not looking happy.

OOC: Your turn to do a "the Captain is not happy reply." : )

[Edited by Isolde on 01-02-2001 at 12:19 AM]

OOC: Is that a challenge....well here goes.

IC: When they closed the door Captain Harrison sat forward in his chair.
"Sit down! I want to know how the hell you blew you perfect plan Detective Thompson- no, shut up and listen! Because of your screw up the mayor and the chief of police just ripped into me- I am a mere shadow of my former self and it is all because of you! You truly fucked things up, you lost over a million in diamonds because you were stupid enough to follow a decoy. You truly screwed up, both of you! Because of this I have reporters crawling all over my ass, probing everywhere trying to find a record of any other fuck ups that you have made, and I am sorely tempted to throw them a bone!"

Marcus began to say something but before he could Captain Harrison cut him off, "I don't want to hear it, I heard enough from you last night and your partner backed you up, that's what makes this so damn hard- as of now you are on one weeks suspension. Be glad that it isn't more."

"A week," Marcus said. "That is too much."

"I could fire you, is that what you want Detective! Now get the hell out of my sight and leave your badge and gun behind when you leave."

OOC: That was good...now for my part.

IC: The badge that hit Captain Harrison's desk was not Marcus' but Desiree's. It was followed by her gun, open and empty of shells. The shells clattered about a bit before they settled.

She could feel both men's eyes on her and her heart was beating hard and fast.

"Ashton," Captain Harrison said in a very controled voice,"Did I ask for YOUR badge?" "No, Sir," "Than what the hell do you think you are doing?"

"If Thompson goes, I go," Desiree's tone was firm and determined. She was trying not to look at Marcus knowing he would not like what she was doing,"I wont work with anyone else."

The Captain's face flushed and his voice rose.
"Are you giving me an ultimatum, Detective," He growled at her,"Do you think I wont fire you both? Now pick up your badge and get out of here and be back on Monday."

"No, Sir," Desiree said, chin set, voice wavering just a bit,"Thompson is my partner and if he leaves so do I. And if it cost me my job so be it."

Looking straight at Captain Harrison she said,"We need him and you know it, Sir. If anyone can catch The Devil it's him. He knows how she operates, he knows how she thinks. Hell, Captian, the only thing he doesnt know about her is her face and if you give us time we can come up with even that. But I wont go after her without him and you know there is no one else in this precint who is qualified to do so."

Somehow finding the strength to hold the Captain's gaze she watched as his face turned from red to crimson to a kind of purple before he sat back and his face returned to normal.

Looking from Marcus to Desiree and back again he finally shook his head and grumbled,"Get you stuff the hell of my desk and I dont want to see you until Monday."

Before she could say another word he added,"And take your partner with you." As she picked up her things, he reached in his desk drawer and took out something and threw it in the pile-it was her evening bag.

"You are going to need your keys if you want to drive. Unless Thompson is going to drive you everywhere. NOW GO!"

She went, scooting past Marcus and out the door and not stopping until she was pushing the button for the elevator.

Marcus watched Desiree walk hurriedly to the elevator then walked to join her. As soon as they were inside the elevator and the doors closed he turned to her, "What the hell do you think you are doing. You almost got yourself fired and all because I was suspended. I can face another suspension but you can not get yourself fired- your job means a lot to you, you are too good a cop to throw it all away now."
